Reviews
The New Yorker , David Denby
Canetti's autobiography is a great work that evokes amusement and disbelief as well as admiration.... It is a book that comes as close to encompassing "everything" as any book can get. The Los Angeles Times Sunday Book Review , Richard Eder
Canetti's brilliance as a writer shines out, particularly as it works to bring alive his intellectual passions andoccasionallya measure of personal pain. Book Description
The memoirs of the late Nobel Laureate, for the first time in one volume. The uncompromising achievement of Elias Canetti is one matched by few writers this century. His novel, Auto-da-F, and his work of social theory, Crowds and Power, are modern classics, displaying a voracious intellect and exquisite sensibility that belie their author's polyglot background: a Ladino Jew born in Bulgaria, Canetti was raised in Vienna, Manchester, and Zurich, finally settling in England. Canetti worked brilliantly in many forms, but the three volumes that comprise his autobiography are where his genius is perhaps most evident. The first volume, The Tongue Set Free, presents the events, personalities, and intellectual forces that fed Canetti's early creative development. The Torch in My Ear explores his admiration for the first great mentor of his adulthood, Karl Kraus, and also gives an account of Canetti's first wife. The final volume, The Play of the Eyes, is set in Vienna between 1931 and 1937, with the European catastrophe imminent; here he describes his relationships with Hermann Broch and Robert Musil, among others. The three volumes, read together, make it clear that this spiritual and intellectual autobiography is much more than a compelling account of the development of a great artistit is a portrait of the tragic character of an entire era.

Elias Canetti, Nobel prize winner in Literature was born in Ruse, a small port in Bulgaria on the Danube river, into Sephardic Jewish family. The family were well-to-do merchants, who spoke old Spanish. German was the fourth language Canetti acquired - after Ladino, also known as Judaeo-Spanish, Bulgarian, and English. He eventually chose to write in German and retained a lasting love of German culture. When Canetti was six, his family moved to Manchester, England. After the sudden death of his father, his mother took the family to Vienna, where he learned German. With the outbreak of World War Two, he was forced to flee from the Nazis. HOME Elias Canetti Elias Canetti was a Bulgarian-born English novelist, essayist, sociologist, and playwright, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1981. His 1935 German novel Die Blendung ("The Deception"), was published in America as The Tower of Babel and in England as . Originally planned as the first in a series of eight novels examining mad visionaries, the book deals with the dangers inherent in believing that rigid, dissociated intellectualism and detached, dogmatic scholarship can prevail over evil, chaos, and destruction. Set in Vienna and Paris, the novel tells the story of Peter Kien, an internationally respected scholar of Chinese studies who maintains a personal library of 25,000 volumes. After dreaming that the books are burned, Kien marries his housekeeper Therese, believing that she will preserve his beloved library should disaster befall him. Therese throws him out of his book-filled apartment, however, and Kien, now homeless, enters the grotesque underworld of the city. Delusional, he fluctuates between horrifying hallucinations and an unspeakable reality. Kien's disintegration finally leads him to set fire to his precious books and to await his own death in the ensuing inferno. Canetti was born in Ruse, Bulgaria into Sephardic Jewish family. The family were well-to-do merchants, who spoke old Spanish. When Canetti was six years old, his family moved to Manchester, England. After the sudden death of his father his mother took the family to Vienna, where he learned German.

25.7.1905 Ruse (Bulgaria), 14.8.1994 Zurigo, di origine sefardita. Figlio di Jacques, commerciante. 1) (1933) Veza Taubner-Calderon; 2) (1971) Hera Buschor.
