Biography
Albert Camus was born on 7 November 1913, in Mondovi, Algeria. His father, Lucien, died in 1914, during World War I's Battle of the Marne. War was to remain
a constant throughout Camus' life and his literature.
Camus' mother was left to raise her son alone, in extreme poverty. Widowed and nearly deaf, there was little possibility of her earning a reasonable income. She
moved the family to Rue de Lyon, in the Belcourt section of Algiers. Belcourt was a crowded, almost third-world neighborhood. The family was forced to move to
the region so a grandmother could raise Albert and his older brother. Albert's grandmother was dying of liver cancer, while an uncle living in the house was
paralyzed. Camus' family represented all human misery and misfortune. According to Camus' accounts, his mother was permanently melancholy. To escape this home life, Camus buried himself in studies and participation in local athletic teams. He distinguished himself in sports as a leader and competitor. In academics, Camus also excelled. When Camus entered the local Belcourt schools, an

Albert Camus Dates:
Born: November 7, 1913 in Mondovi, Algeria Died: January 4, 1960 in Villeblerin, France (car accident) Nobel Prize in Literature: 1957 Biography: Albert Camus was a French-Algerian journalist and novelist. He is regarded as one of the primary sources of modern existentialism, and his novels focused on the philosophy that human life is, objectively speaking, meaningless. This results in absurdity which can only be overcome by a commitment to moral integrity and social solidarity. Although not a philosopher in the strictest sense, his philosophy is expressed widely in his novels and he is generally regarded as an existentialist philosopher. Camus, Albert 1913-60, French writer, b. Algiers. Camus was one of the most important authors and thinkers of the 20th cent. While a student at the Univ. of Algiers, he formed a theater group and adapted, directed, and acted in plays. He became active in social reform and was briefly a member of the Communist party. Shortly after his essay Noces [weddings] appeared (1939), he went to Paris as a journalist. In World War II he joined the French resistance and was principal editor of the underground paper Combat. Noted for his vigorous, concise, and lucid style, Camus soon gained recognition as a major literary figure. His belief that man's condition is absurd identified him with the existentialists, but he denied allegiance to that group; his works express rather a courageous humanism. The characters in his novels and plays, although keenly aware of the meaninglessness of the human condition, assert their humanity by rebelling against their circumstances. His essay Le Mythe de Sisyphe (1942, tr.

Albert Camus November 7, 1913: French novelist Albert Camus is born in Algiers On this day, Albert Camus, future Nobel Prize winner, is born in Algiers to a working-class family.
Camus was a good student and a dedicated athlete who won a scholarship to a prestigious French high school in Algiers. His sporting endeavors were ended at age 17 by an attack of tuberculosis. Instead of pursuing an athletic career, he took a degree at the University of Algiers. He intended to become a philosophy teacher, but another bout of tuberculosis prevented him from taking a position. He became involved with a theater group in Algiers, writing and producing plays, while he also worked as a journalist. At age 25, he moved to France. During World War II, he joined the French Resistance and wrote for a liberal newspaper. He continued political journalism until 1947, while also writing plays, novels, and philosophical essays.
In 1942, his essay "The Myth of Sisyphus" set out the philosophical questions that he would also address in his novels. He analyzed nihilism and the absurdity and futility of human labor given the inevitability of death. Camus argued that man must make his own meaning by enjoying his efforts and struggles, despite their ultimate lack of significance. He continued to explore these themes in his first novel, The Stranger (1942). In his 1947 novel, The Plague, his characters maintain dignity and loyalty in the face of an epidemic in an Algerian town. In his later novels, essays, and plays, he explored the search for moral order. Camus won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1957. In 1960, after accepting a ride from strangers while hitchhiking, Camus was killed in a car wreck at age 46. (From

December 20 ~  Simple Harmony Notebooks 1935-1951 "But what is happiness except the s i m p l e harmony between a m a n and the life he leads." ~ Albert Camus Born poor in Mondovi, Algeria, writer Albert Camus (1913-1960) was a philosophy student and leftist journalist who was active with the French Resistance of World War II and had a close association with existentialist John-Paul Sartre "If, after all, men cannot always make history have meaning, they can always act so that their own lives have one," he once said. Living at a time of great world turbulence, Camus was best known for his novel, L'etranger (1941, The Stranger ) in which he passionately tried to find the meaning of life and examined man's search for values in the world. Through absurdity, he sought to make sense of the chaos. "The absurd is sin without God ," he observed. In 1957, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his important literary production, which with clear-sighted earnestness illuminates the problems of the human conscience in our times." Camus, who died in an auto crash, once said, "Men are never really willing to die except for the sake of
