The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 ‹ The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

Jane Addams
Jane Addams was born in Cedarville Illinois on Sept. 6, 1860 and was educated at Rockford College, graduating in 1882. She is most well-known for founding Hull-House, located on the Near West Side of Chicago in 1889. She lived and worked there until her death in 1935.  At the time she was the nation's most distinguished woman influencing people through her writing, her social work, and efforts toward international peace.  In the area where Hull-House was located, a melting pot of first generation immigrants from Italy, Russia, Poland, Ireland, Germany, Greece and Eastern Europe had settled to find work in the industrialized city.  Jane Addams and her assistants provided the families with kindergarten and daycare services for working mothers, a job referral program, an art gallery, libraries, and music and art classes for the neighborhood residents.   By 1900 the Jane Club, a residence for working women, the Little Theater, a Labor Museum and a hall for trade union organizations had been established.   She and her cohorts also created the first juvenile court in the nation, and encouraged the Illinois legislature to make laws to protect women and children.  In 1903 a strong child labor law was passed along with a compulsory education law.  Their emphasis on education was seen in influencing the federal legislature to enact a federal child labor law in 1916.

Philanthropy Theme(s):
    Philanthropy and Civil Society
Objectives: The learner will:
  • express why Jane Addams is a model of philanthropy, showing good character and civic virtue.
  • evaluate efforts to solve current community's problems and formulate ways that voluntarism can serve the common good.
Materials:
  • Jane Addams Chronology Attachment One
  • Hull House Firsts Attachment Two
Instructional Procedure(s):
    Anticipatory Set:
    Jane Addams is listed as a "reformer of the Progressive Era" and spent her life trying to make changes in all areas of life. Review some of the reforms of the Progressive Era.
  • Look at the Jane Addams Chronology (see Attachment One ) and/or the Hull House Firsts (see Attachment Two ). Note the various activities Miss Addams engaged in besides the work at Hull House, such as organizing the Women's Peace Party or serving as the First Vice President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Discuss whether or not Jane Addams and Hull House could have been as effective without "spreading their wings" into many areas. Note that some of the "firsts" shown on the Hull House list occurred many years after the death of Jane Addams. What does this tell us about the endurance of Hull House even today? Ask students to judge in what way Jane Addams is a model of philanthropy.

Jane Addams, founder of Hull-House, is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize At age 71, Jane Addams (1860-1935) became the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor which she shared with Nicholas Murray Butler of Columbia University. Described at that ceremony as a spokesperson for all peace-loving women of the world, Addams had been actively engaged in the peace movement since 1914. Her struggle for peace was not easy. During the war, she was attacked as unpatriotic and demonized as an advocate of socialism and communism.
Prior to the beginning of World War I, Addams devoted most of her time to the Hull-House, a Chicago settlement house and educational center that attracted countless numbers of poor immigrants, and to political activities aimed at abolishing child labor. She was a natural leader, and, in spite of her frequent illnesses, she was at the forefront of the struggles for women's suffrage, immigrant education, health care, children's rights, housing, peace and progressive education.
Born in 1860, Jane was the eighth child of nine. Her mother died during childbirth when Jane was two and a half. Her father, John Addams, was a major influence in her life. He was a prosperous sawmill owner in rural Illinois and was concerned with public interest issues. Among John Addam's accomplishments, he helped to organize the first church and school in their home town and ran the first town library out of their house. Later in his life he was elected a state senator, as a staunch supporter of Abraham Lincoln, who would become a role-model for Jane in her early years.
