The program, under the direction of Professor Paula D. McClain at Duke University, is supported by both the Cross-Directorate (Research Experience for Undergraduates) and Political Science Programs at NSF. Read more about this grant. (RBSI) is a five week, academically intensive summer program designed to stimulate the graduate school experience, provide mentoring, and expand academic opportunities for African American, Latino/a and Native American students. For over a decade, the RBSI has helped talented minority students between their junior and senior year of college excel and go on to graduate school, many with full fellowships and teaching assistantships. Five former Bunche students have earned Ph.D's and now hold university level teaching positions in political science and over 40 are working on or have completed a master's degrees. A number of RBSI students have also won prestigious fellwships including the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, the Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship, the APSA Minority Graduate Fellowship, and awards/fellowships within individual institutions.

HOPE LIFTED NOBEL PEACEMAKER/ALUMNUS TO RENOWN Chancellor Charles Young welcomed Nobel Laureate Ralph Bunche back to campus for the dedication of Bunche Hall in 1969. BY MEG SULLIVAN
It was another era of instability when the prospects for peace in the Middle East looked even bleaker than they do today. Only four years old, the United Nations had already seen its U.N. mediator tragically assassinated on the job. Yet one man, the grandson of a former slave, dared to hope in 1949 for a truce between the new state of Israel and its four Arab neighbors. The success of UCLA alumnus Ralph J. Bunche not only gave the Middle East its first respite from war since the founding of the Israeli State, but provided a much needed validation for the U.N., whose charter he had helped write in 1945. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the presentation of the Nobel Peace Prize to Bunche. On Dec. 10, 1950, the 1927 graduate received the coveted award for negotiating the Arab-Israeli armistice agreement. This same award would eventually go to Martin Luther King, Jr., Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela, but 1950 marked the first time that Sweden so honored a black person. Bunche, who went on to become a civil-rights activist, would be given the Presidential Medal of Freedom as well. Hailed by the Los Angeles Times four years after his 1971 death, at age 67, as “one of the greatest men Los Angeles has ever produced,” Bunche had somehow learned to hope despite a childhood that seemed to keep it out of his reach.

The name of Ralph Bunche is unfamiliar in too many textbooks.
He is a hero of world peace and, in actuality, devised and implemented
the mediation principles that now govern all UN peacekeeping efforts.
B orn in 1903 into a poor, black family in Detroit, Michigan, Ralph Bunche became an ambitious individual, a scholar on racism, a skilled diplomat and tireless peacemaker and humanitarian. He co-authored an important book on racism, fought against all forms of hatred, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950. He was Undersecretary-General of the United Nations; negotiated four peace agreements that ended the 1948-49 Arab-Israeli War; and was responsible for the first UN program on peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Indeed, Ralph Bunche was a man who rose from modest circumstances to become the foremost international mediator and peacekeeper of his time. This is his inspiring story. In welcoming the audience to the film presentation, Dr. Billington noted that the evening was indeed special “because of the character of the man whom we are here to celebrate.” He continued: “Ralph Bunche was the first person of color anywhere in the world to win the Nobel Peace Prize [in 1950]. … A black American, he was a fiercely dedicated international civil servant who never wished for either the limelight or reward for the extraordinary services he rendered to the United Nations—as the guiding spirit of the U.N. trusteeship provisions; as a mediator on the Island of Rhodes during the first Palestine crisis, for which he received the Peace Prize; as the organizer of the immensely complicated U.N. operations in the Congo Katanga crisis; and for ensuring, almost singlehandedly, that peacekeeping operations became part of the [work of the] United Nations. … He was truly a man of great vision who expressed it through action.”

Dr.Ralph Bunche Looking Back in history Ralph Bunche rose from a humble neighborhood on the lower eastside of Detroit to the dizzying heights of international diplomacy at a time when black Americans in many areas of the United States were forced to sit in the backs of buses. In a career filled with diplomatic triumphs, he is perhaps best remembered for almost single-handedly negotiating peace between Israel and Egypt in 1949, which brought him the Nobel Peace Prize the following year, making him the first Black (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the second)and the youngest to have received this award. He was born Ralph Johnson Bunch (The "e" was not added to the family name until 1917) on Aug. 7, 1904 in a small frame house in Detroit to Fred Bunch, an itinerant barber, and Olive Agnes Bunch, a musician. Baptized at the Second Baptist Church in Greektown, he spent his early years selling Detroit newspapers to supplement the family income. (There is some dispute about his date of birth. Current records list him as having been born in 1904, but his school records have his birthdate as 1903. Family members say his original birth certificate had become lost and when a new one was issued in 1940 his Aunt Ethel recorded his birthdate erroneously as 1904.)

Pioneer for Peace : Ralph Bunche He invented the peacekeeping force. He engineered the dismantling of the worlds great colonial empires. He planned the first march on Washington for civil rights. He founded the political science department at Howard University. There is a monument to him across from the United Nations building in New York City, and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan keeps his picture on the office wall. And yet, most Americans cannot tell you anything about him. They may know his name: Ralph Bunche. Some may know that he was the first African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize. For most, however, his image is far from vivid, and very few people have any idea of the scope of his contributions. That may change with the airing on PBS of Ralph Bunche: An American Odyssey . The film is based on the biography bearing the same title, written by Bunche's longtime colleague at the UN, Sir Brian Urquhart. Urquhart says one reason for Bunche's surprising obscurity is his own attitude toward his accomplishments: "Bunche had the attitude that a public servant was a public servant, and that the whole point was not to get a lot of recognition or acclaim but to get the job done." He adds, "He's the only person I've ever heard of who tried to turn down the Nobel Peace Prize, because he felt he was simply doing a job and he wasn't out for prizes." In the end, Ralph Bunche did accept the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950 for negotiating the Armistice Agreements between the Arab nations and Israel.
