Ralph Johnson Bunche
Won Nobel Peace Prize in 1950
Birthplace: Detroit, MI
Education: University of California at Los Angeles, Harvard University Ralph Johnson Bunche was born in Detroit, MI. He was only 12 years old when his parents died, and his grandmother, who had been born into slavery, took Ralph and his two sisters to live in Los Angeles. Here Ralph did odd jobs to supplement the family's meager income. Ralph attended UCLA on an athletic scholarship and graduated summa cum laude as valedictorian of his class. He then studied political science at Harvard University, from which he obtained a master's degree in 1928. He became active in the Civil Rights Movement and remained active all his life. In 1936, Bunche wrote

For his efforts Ralph would be awarded with the Spingarn Prize by the NAACP in 1949, over thirty honorary degrees, and most notable of all, the Nobel Peace Prize for 1950. He was also a speaker at the now legendary, March On Washington, and supported Dr. King in his efforts to bring racial peace. Ralph Bunche is an example of courage and excellence. He took the ideals his grandmother gave him about not being afraid to compete with whites, and successfully competed on every level. Even today, Ralph's legacy at the UN is secure, as his accomplishments are unmatched by anyone in the world. I've listed some of his writings below. Take a minute to educate yourselves on one of the premiere thinkers of the 20th century, Ralph Bunche, black and outstanding, just like you. Peace, one luv, and black power! Eleanor Roosevelt and Ralph Bunche
You were there and watched Eleanor Roosevelt at work in these efforts [in establishing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights]. How would you characterize her?
The Declaration was an extremely important milestone in human civility. We haven't got there yet, but it's made an extraordinary difference to the way in which people behave already. Another American that you observed and worked under and who made quite an impact was Ralph Bunche. Tell us a little about him.
I suppose he's the greatest friend I ever had in my life and also my mentor for most of the years I was in the UN. He was an absolutely extraordinary person and again, someone who now seems to be shamefully forgotten.
A World View of Race in 1936, which made the parallel between colonialism and racism in the United States and analyzed the underlying motivations for each. They were very important works at the time. He also did a major study of colonialism in Africa, which was quite an unusual subject in those days. He also began a major study of the non-white population of South Africa, and he was six months in South Africa doing that. But then he became the chief assistant to Gunnar Myrdal, a Swedish social economist who was commissioned by the Carnegie Corporation to write a book on the race problem in the United States. The book was An American Dilemma which is a landmark in the writing about this subject.

Ralph Johnson Bunche was born on August 7, 1904 in Detroit, Michigan. Bunche's family was poor and his father moved from city to city looking for work. Ralph attended Barstow School in Toledo, Ohio and sold newspapers to add to the family income. Bunche would later recall that, "My childhood days were poor days, but happy ones and filled with music." Ralph's mother died when he was thirteen years old, after which his maternal grandmother reared him. Ralph attended Jefferson High School in Los Angeles. He experienced racial prejudice when he was not allowed admittance to the Ephebain Socity, the citywide honor society. He was so upset that he wanted to quit school. He did not quit and graduated from high school in 1922 with academic honors. Ralph's grandmother encouraged him to continue his education. After graduation, he entered the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). At college Ralph participated in athletic and social activities. He was on the staff of the college newspaper, the "Daily Bruin," and sports editor of the college yearbook. bodyOffer(20580) Although he worked part-time jobs to help pay for his college expenses, he excelled in his subjects. He majored in political science and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the most prestigious honor society in the U.S. In 1927, Bunche graduated from UCLA with the highest honors.
