L'Abolition de laguerre par l'instruction [Abolishing War through Education], published in , and revisions of his [Liberal Christianity], which develops the concept of a liberal faith in which organized religion is supplanted by a personal morality independently arrived at.
Buisson was scholar as well as administrator. In 1878 he edited and saw through publication the first volume of the four-volume work . In 1896 he became editor-in-chief of an influential journal of education, . From 1896 to 1902 he was professor of education at the Sorbonne.
The Dreyfus Affair ignited Buisson's desire to enter politics. Among the first of the ardent Dreyfusards when that affair exploded, he undertook a vehement writing and speaking campaign to reverse the Dreyfus decision and helped to found the League of the Rights of Man (1898) which grew out of the Dreyfus case and of which he became president in 1913. From 1902 to 1914 he was the elected deputy for the Seine. A Radical-Socialist, he supported compulsory, secular schooling; served as chairman of a commission on the issue of separation of church and state and as vice-chairman of a commission on proposals for social welfare legislation; sat on the Commission for Universal Suffrage where he upheld the vote for women and supported the principle of proportional representation.

Nobel Essay , May 31, 1928
Changes in Concepts of War and Peace
We are now approaching the end of the six-month period which the Nobel Foundation has granted to laureates for expressing their acknowledgments. It is a duty which I should not like to leave unfulfilled. To explain more precisely the reasons that I have for offering you my humble thanks, let me sum up briefly the events which have, from the standpoint of world peace, stood out during the past six months. I shall speak only of this period. In other words, I do not propose to discuss the rapid changes which, over the past quarter of a century, have transformed prevailing opinion. You are already aware of them, and indeed Alfred Nobel, more than any of his contemporaries, had in his day prophesied them, so to speak. Since the beginning of this century, Gentlemen, you too have always kept your hopes alive. While awaiting the time when humanity will justify you, as it surely will, you have steadfastly continued to mark milestones reached along the way to victory. Two ideas have assured the advancement of your work. One stems from a new concept of war. The other concerns the recent development of the human conscience.

Buisson H. Roger-Viollet (b. Dec. 20, 1841, Paris, Franced. Feb. 16, 1932, Thieuloy-Saint-Antoine), French educator who reorganized the French primary school system and who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1927 jointly with the German pacifist Ludwig Quidde Under the French Third Republic Buisson was appointed inspector general of the Paris public schools in 1871, but he was forced to resign for recommending the elimination of religious instruction. As national director of elementary education (1879-96), he aided Premier Jules Ferry in drafting statutes that took the public schools out of church control (1881, 1886) and made primary education free and compulsory (1882). After teaching at the Sorbonne (1896-1902), he sat in the national Chamber of Deputies (1902-14, 1919-23). In 1898 Buisson helped to found the Ligue des Droits de l'Homme (League of Human Rights). His peacemaking efforts as its president from 1913 to 1926, including the period of World War I, in addition to his postwar work for Franco-German amity, earned him the Nobel Prize.

Buisson, Ferdinand Ferdinand Edouard Buisson (December 20, 1841-February 16, 1932), «the world's most persistent pacifist», was born in Paris, the son of a Protestant judge of the St.Etienne Tribunal. For his ardent partisanship of pacifist, Radical-Socialist, anticlerical views he was vilified by journalists, attacked by clerics and conservative scholars, forced from public office by political slander, and even, at the age of eighty-seven, severely caned by a group of student protesters who disrupted a pacifist meeting at which he was speaking. A progressive educator, he played a vital role in the modernization of French primary education.
Buisson attended the Collège d'Argentan and the Lycée St.-Etienne but left school at the age of sixteen to help support the family when his father died. He completed his secondary education at the Lycée Condorcet and his undergraduate degree at the University of Paris, obtained an advanced degree and certification to teach philosophy, and much later, at the age of fifty-one, took his doctorate in literature.
In 1866, unwilling to swear allegiance to the Emperor and consequently unable to find a teaching post, he became an expatriate in Switzerland where he taught at the Académie de Neuchâtel. The following year he participated in the Geneva peace congress which founded the Ligue internationale de la paix et de la liberté. Among his writings during this period of exile are L'Abolition de laguerre par l'instruction [Abolishing War through Education], published in Etats-Unis de l'Europe, and revisions of his Christianisme libéral [Liberal Christianity], which develops the concept of a liberal faith in which organized religion is supplanted by a personal morality independently arrived at.

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.
