Karl Hjalmar Branting (November 23, 1860-February 24, 1925) was born in Stockholm, the only child of Professor Lars Branting, one of the principal developers of the Swedish school of gymnastics. He was educated at the exclusive Beskow School in Stockholm, passing his matriculation examination at the age of seventeen, with a distinguished record in mathematics and Latin. After studying at the University of Uppsala for the next five years, concentrating on mathematics and astronomy, he accepted a position in 1882 as an assistant to the director of the Stockholm Observatory
But Branting was a social scientist as well as a natural scientist. By 1880 he had adopted liberal views, which had their origin in his studies and observations on social and cultural questions. In 1881 when he learned that the Stockholm Workers Institute, which provided lectures and courses of study for workingmen, had been denied financial support by the city, he contributed from his personal funds the amount necessary to keep the Institute open. For Branting the year of 1883 proved decisive. In Paris he heard the lectures of the French Socialist, Paul Lafargue; in Zurich he learned about German socialist doctrine from Eduard Bernstein, who was publishing

Branting, detail from an oil painting by Richard Bergh; in Gripsholm Castle, Sweden By courtesy of the Svenska Portrattarkivet, Stockholm (b. Nov. 23, 1860, Stockholm, Swedend. Feb. 24, 1925, Stockholm), Swedish statesman and pioneer of social democracy whose conciliatory international diplomacy in the first two decades of the 20th century was recognized by the award of the 1921 Nobel Prize for Peace , which he shared with Norwegian diplomat Christian Lous Lange After studying science in Stockholm and Uppsala, Branting in 1883 began work for the radical newspaper Tiden, becoming its editor shortly thereafter. In 1886 he assumed the editorship of the Social-Demokraten, and, when the Social Democratic Party was formed in 1889, he was prominent among its founders. Elected to the lower chamber of the Riksdag (parliament) for the first time in 1896, he was until 1902 its only Social Democratic member. After the unilateral withdrawal of Norway from union with Sweden in 1905, together with other Socialists and Liberals, Branting played an important part in quieting Swedish revanchist sentiment. In March 1920 Branting formed Sweden's first Social Democratic government, but elections held the following September went against him. He returned to power in September 1921, retaining office until April 1923. In October 1924 he formed a third government, but illness led to his resignation on January 25.

    A.) Domestic Policy

Once World War I was over, in Sweden political debates again focussed on a revision of the discussion. The left wing of the social democrats, among them PER ALBIN HANSSON, sympathized with the GERMAN REVOLUTION, demanded the abolition of Great Capitalism, of the monarchy, of parliament's first chamber, of mandatory military service and of restrictions on the right to vote. They held a REVOLUTION FESTIVAL in Stockholm on which they turned against moderate social democrates such as HJALMAR BRANTING.
Having potential civil unrest (massive strikes, even a revolution) in mind and with reports from revolutions going on in Russia, Germany and Hungary, the political right conceded to a constitutional reform demanded by the left and the center. This reform included universal suffrage for both men and women (who were given the right to vote in 1919), with property restrictions still in force for elections to the first chamber. In 1919, 54 % of the population had the right to vote, as compared to 19 % in 1911.
In 1921 Sweden abolished the death penalty (the last execution had taken place in 1910). The 8-HOUR-WORKDAY and the 48-HOUR-WORKWEEK were introduced by law in 1919.

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.
