Among the X-ray crystallographers inspired by William Henry Bragg and William Lawrence Bragg was Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin (1910–1994), the third woman ever to win the Nobel Prize in chemistry, which she received in 1964. Dorothy Crowfoot was born in Cairo, Egypt, to English parents. Although her formal schooling took place in England, she spent a significant part of her youth in the Middle East and North Africa, where her father was a school inspector. Both her parents were authorities in archaeology, and she almost followed the family vocation, but from childhood she was fascinated by minerals and crystals. She enjoyed using a portable mineral analysis kit given to her when she became interested in analyzing pebbles she and her sister found in the stream that ran through the Crowfoot's garden in Khartoum, Sudan. When she was fifteen, her mother gave her Sir William Henry Bragg's Concerning the Nature of Things (1925), which contained intriguing discussions of how scientists could use X-rays to "see" atoms and molecules.

Peter Doherty won the Nobel Prize for Medicine (immunology) in 1996. He was born in 1940 in Queensland and graduated from the University of Queensland. He shared the prize with Rolf Zinkernagel for the discovery of how the immune system recognises virus-infected cells. Their discovery has, in its turn, laid a foundation for an understanding of general mechanisms used by the cellular immune system to recognise both foreign microorganisms and self molecules. The two Nobel Laureates carried out the research for which they have now been awarded the Prize in 1973-75 at the John Curtin School of Medical Research in Canberra, Australia, where Peter Doherty already held his position and to which Rolf Zinkernagel came from Switzerland as a research fellow. Other Australian Nobel Prize winners in science have been: Sir William Lawrence Bragg Winner of the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics (X-ray crystallography). Born in 1890 in Adelaide (his father, co-winner Sir William Henry Bragg , taught at the University of Adelaide), Graduated from University of Adelaide.

Australian Nobel Prize Winners The Voice of Australians ~ Caring About Our Country The awarding ceremony for the Nobel Prize winners takes place each year on the 10th of December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death. Alfred Nobel was a the Swedish-born inventor and international industrialist. The festival day of the Nobel Foundation takes place at the Stockholm Concert Hall (Stockholms Konserthus) in Sweden. His Majesty the King of Sweden, hands each Nobel Laureate a diploma, a medal and a document confirming the Prize amount. The Monetary Prize
In 1997 the amount awarded totalled SEK 7.5 million (about 1 million in US dollars) per full Prize. The amount varies because it comes from the interest earned from the fund created from the estate of Alfred Nobel. The Banquet
After the Ceremony, Nobel Laureates and their families are honoured at the Nobel Banquet at the Stockholm City Hall (Stockholms Stadshus). Approximately 1,300 people attend the Banquet. Their Majesties the King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family of Sweden are guests of honour at both the Ceremony and the Nobel Banquet. The Nobel Prize is considered the most prestigious prize in the world and receives worldwide coverage by the print media, radio and television.

    Born 2 Jul 1906
German-born American theoretical physicist who helped to shape classical physics into quantum physics and increased the understanding of the atomic processes responsible for the properties of matter and of the forces governing the structures of atomic nuclei. Bethe did work relating to armour penetration and the theory of shock waves of a projectile moving through air. He studied nuclear reactions and reaction cross sections (1935-38). In 1943, Oppenheimer asked Bethe to be the head of the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos on the Manhattan Project. After returning to Cornell University in 1946, Bethe became a leader promoting the social responsibility of science. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics (1967) for his work on the production of energy in stars Hugh L. Dryden
    (source)
    Born 2 Jul 1898; died 2 Dec 1965.
Hugh L(atimer) Dryden was a U.S. physicist and deputy administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( NASA , 1958) for 7 years. He made pioneering studies in the aerodynamics of high speed and some of the earliest studies of air flow around wing surfaces at the speed of sound. During WW II he headed the Washington Project of the National Defense Research Committee, which developed the Bat radar-homing missile, the first successful U.S. guided missile, which was used by the navy against the Japanese during WW II. In 1962, he led negotiations for joint U.S.-Soviet space projects. He was instrumental in achieving the exchange of weather-satellite data and operation of cooperative communications satellite tests.
