WELCOME RECEPTION

MONDAY 26 AUGUST, 18.30-22.00
Wroc³aw is the birthplace of Max Born,
Nobel Prize Winner
in 1954 in physics, famous for his fundamental research in quantum mechanics. As a historical event of the Conference, the unveiling of the plaque devoted to Max Born is planned. The ceremony will take place at Plac Wolno¶ci 4 (the house of his birth, the place is very near of the City Centre and it is pointed on the map as No. 2). The son of Max Born, Professor Gustav Born (London University) will unveil the plaque. The authorities of the City of Wroc³aw, Wroc³aw Technical University, Wroc³aw University and others are invited to this event. After this ceremony all participants will walk (10 minutes) to the City Hall (No. 3 on the map ) for Welcome Reception. All attendees and accompanying persons are invited to the City Hall. The exhibition of Goya paintings in the City Hall should add more artistic impression to the Reception.

    27 gennaio 2002 Non dimentichiamo

He hired Heisenberg and Pascual Jordan to come and work for him on these problems and it was this fruitful triad that put Heisenberg's ideas into their most useful form. But Born's most memorable contribution concerns the way in which we are to regard quantum mechanics. What is this wavefunction? What does it mean? Born suggested that the only observable aspect of the wavefunction was its square, not the wavefunction itself. He held that the correct interpretation of the wavefunction, was that the square at a given point in space, was proportional to the probability of finding the particle at that point in space. The square is called the probability density while we can call the wavefunction is probability amplitude

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Max Born The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1954 Max Born attended school in Breslau, studying a wide range of subjects. Max's favorite subjects from the ones he studied were mathematics and astronomy and he thought of specializing in astronomy. He attended astronomy lectures and successfully obtained his doctorate in 1907. In 1912 Born was offered a post in Gottingen and, once on a teaching staff, he began a research project with von Karman. This work was on lattice dynamics where they identified the degrees of freedom of a crystal with the normal modes of vibration of the whole body. Their work uses three dimensional Fourier analysis and periodic boundary conditions. He was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize for his statistical studies of wave functions. He received many other honors, far too numerous to mention. To name a few- he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1939 and awarded its Hughes Medal in 1950. He received the Stokes Medal from the University of Cambridge, two German schools were named after him and he was made an honorary member of academies in Russia, India, Romania, Peru, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Sweden, and the USA. In 1914, Born was offered a chair at Berlin where he became a colleague of Planck. In 1919 he moved to a chair in Frankfurt-am-Main but two years later he was back in Gottingen. In 1921, the year he became professor at Gottingen, he reformulated the First Law of Thermodynamics. In 1926 Born collaborated with Pauli and Heisenberg, who was a student of Born's, on quantum theory. Born recognized Heisenberg's approach to quantum mechanics as being matrix algebra. Born produced work of fundamental importance in quantum mechanics beginning with this collaboration. His treatment replaced the original quantum theory, which regarded electrons as particles, with a mathematical description representing their observed behavior more accurately. Born returned to Germany when he retired in 1953 making his home in Bad Pyrmont, near Gottingen.

Max Born was born into a Jewish family in Breslau, Germany , on 11th December, 1882. He studied physics at the University of Gottingen and obtained his doctorate in 1907. Born became professor of physics at Frankfurt-am-Main (1919-21) before moving back to the University of Gottingen where he made it into the centre for theoretical physics. Inspired by the work of Nils Bohr , Born attempted to seek a mathematical explanation for the quantum theory. In 1924 Born coined the term quantum mechanics and the following year worked with his student, Werner Heisenberg , to develop a system called matrix mechanics that accounted mathematically for the position and momentum of the electron in the atom.

From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . So let me invite you to follow our two Spring Students on another, this time not political but scientific, trip across our continent. Max Born (1882-1970), a German theoretical physicist, was a pioneer in developing quantum mechanics. In collaboration with his students and assistants Werner Heisenberg, Pascual Jordan, and Wolfgang Pauli, he attempted to develop a new quantum mechanics. When Heisenberg succeeded in 1925, Born and others were able to advance the theory, using more systematic and powerful mathematics. For Born's interpretation of the square of Schrodinger's wave function as the probability of an electron's position, and for his further clarification of the wave-particle duality, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1954.
