Father of "Green Revolution" coming to OARDC
Norman Borlaug, dubbed the "father of the green revolution," will be presenting a seminar the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center's Wooster campus on February 22 at 1:30 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium. The Nobel Laureate will be speaking on Prospects of World Agriculture in the 21st Century. "Norman Borlaug's contributions are credited with saving over 100 million lives-a reason he has been recognized as a Nobel Laureate," said Steve Slack, associate vice president for agricultural administration at The Ohio State University and OARDC director. "He is in Ohio to participate in discussions on factors affecting the world food supply, and part of this process will be visiting OARDC's Wooster campus and giving a presentation open to the public." Borlaug won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his untiring efforts to save the hungry of the world. Borlaug has battled hunger and poverty in developing countries for more than 55 years. At age 86, he is one of the oldest active agriculturalists still in the field, approaching development with expertise, energy, and an overwhelming sense of urgency.

Science vs. Hysteria
By Norman E. Borlaug
The Wall Street Journal
January 22, 2003 MEXICO CITY
In 2000, I served on a joint U.S.-European Union Biotechnology Consultative Forum appointed by President Clinton and Romano Prodi, president of the European Commission to look at the full range of issues that have polarized thinking about biotechnology, especially in food and agriculture, on both sides of the Atlantic. While significant differences of opinion existed mainly related to the regulatory structure on certifying agri-biotech products most of the 20 U.S. and European experts on the panel agreed that agricultural biotechnology holds great promise to make dramatic and useful advances during the 21st century. The most prestigious national academies of science in North America and Europe (including the Vatican), also have come out in support of genetic engineering to improve the quantity, quality, and availability of food supplies. Unfortunately, the debate about the safety and utility of genetically modified (GM) crops continues to grow, and now looks to be heating up further. The U.S. is considering filing a challenge at the World Trade Organization to break the European Union's four-year moratorium on importing GM crops. Although the European Commission agrees that the ban needs to be lifted, various member states refuse to do so until more stringent GM labeling regulations are put in place.

There in Denver he wrote yet another inspirational chapter for all who came to hear. “Don’t be satisfied with mediocrity. Don’t waste the potential talent you inherited from your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents! Reach for the stars. You will not reach the stars – but with some stardust in your hands. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish for yourself, your family, community, state, nation and well-being of all humankind,” Borlaug exhorted. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Father of the Green Revolution, Borlaug spoke with experience on star reaching and other astronomical feats in plant science. He is credited with saving more lives than any person who has ever lived.

deliver U Thant lecture The scientist credited with saving more lives than any other person in history will deliver the fourth U Thant Distinguished Lecture at UNU Centre, Tokyo, on October 1. Dr Norman E. Borlaug, who won the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize winner for his work on high-yield wheat, will discuss "Agriculture and Peace: The Role of Science and Technology in Feeding Humankind in the 21st Century." Dr. Borlaug joined the Rockefeller Foundation's technical assistance programme in Mexico in 1944 as a research scientist in charge of wheat improvement. For the next 16 years, he worked to solve problems that were limiting wheat cultivation. It was on the research stations and farmers' fields of Mexico that he developed high yielding wheat varieties that were disease resistant and could grow under a variety of climatic conditions. These wheat types and improved crop management practices became known the “Green Revolution”. Today, the wheat varieties Dr. Borlaug and his colleagues developed are grown on more than 75 million hectares worldwide. Since 1960, world wheat production has increased from 300 to 650 million tons, saving hundreds of millions of people from starvation.

BORLAUG TO RECEIVE MEDAL FROM NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
Writer: Blair Fannin, (979) 845-2259, b-fannin@tamu.edu Established in 1914, the medal is presented annually to honor extraordinary use of science for the public good. Borlaug was selected for the award because of his efforts in the war against hunger by developing and implementing the use of high-yielding, disease-resistant wheat strains grown with improved agronomic practices. Borlaug's work has earned international recognition, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970. "Early in his career, Dr. Borlaug realized that food production is basic to human existence in a healthy and peaceful world," said R. Stephen Berry, National Academy of Sciences home secretary and chair of the selection committee. "People all over the globe are indebted to him and the endless energy he devoted to their most basic needs. Dr. Borlaug continues to advise numerous governments and agencies, yet he keeps his ties to the country and the scientific and educational system that have underpinned his lifelong efforts." Borlaug perfected the high-yield dwarf wheat, which can grow in a multitude of environments. His research transformed agriculture in starvation-plagued Mexico, Asia, Africa and South America.
