A central figure in the "green revolution", Norman Ernest Borlaug
After completing his primary and secondary education in Cresco, Borlaug enrolled in the University of Minnesota where he studied forestry. Immediately before and immediately after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1937, he worked for the U.S. Forestry Service at stations in Massachusetts and Idaho. Returning to the University of Minnesota to study plant pathology, he received the master's degree in 1939 and the doctorate in 1942.
From 1942 to 1944, he was a microbiologist on the staff of the du Pont de Nemours Foundation where he was in charge of research on industrial and agricultural bactericides, fungicides, and preservatives.
In 1944 he accepted an appointment as geneticist and plant pathologist assigned the task of organizing and directing the Cooperative Wheat Research and Production Program in Mexico. This program, a joint undertaking by the Mexican government and the Rockefeller Foundation , involved scientific research in genetics, plant breeding, plant pathology, entomology, agronomy, soil science, and cereal technology. Within twenty years he was spectacularly successful in finding a high-yielding short-strawed, disease-resistant wheat.

DR. NORMAN E. BORLAUG, NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER, TO SPEAK AT UNU ON 1 OCTOBER Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, 1970 Nobel Peace Prize winner, will give the 4th U Thant Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday, 1 October 2002. Dr. Borlaug will discuss his views on "Agriculture and Peace - the Role of Science and Technology in Feeding Humankind in the 21st Century." The lecture will take place from 10:30 a.m. - noon in the U Thant International Conference Hall of the UN House in Tokyo. The U Thant Distinguished Lecture series, co-organized by the United Nations University (UNU) Centre and the UNU Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU/IAS), is a forum through which leading thinkers speak on the role of the United Nations in addressing the challenges facing the world in the twenty-first century. Previous speakers in this lecture series have been Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia; Mr. Thabo Mbeki, President of the Republic of South Africa; and the Honorable William J. Clinton, 42nd President of the United States of America. Dr. Borlaug is known for his innovative work to overcome constraints on wheat production. During his sixteen years in Mexico he developed disease resistant, high-yielding wheat varieties that grow under a variety of climatic conditions. These crop types, along with improved management practices, transformed agricultural production and sparked the "Green Revolution" of the 1960s. The increase in food production assuaged starvation for hundreds of millions of people and, as a result, Dr. Borlaug is credited with saving more lives than any other person in history.

Home Up Individualist Environmentalists iGreens Without technology, millions starve Advances in agricultural technology, from chemical fertilizers to genetically modified crops, are the keys to feeding more than 6 billion people worldwide while preserving vast expanses of uncultivated land for other purposes, a renowned geneticist says. Nobel Laureate Norman Borlaug said such limitations as availability of water and natural plant nutrients makes biotechnology and improved crop production methods that much more important in stabilizing agricultural land and battling starvation. Borlaug offered his views on agriculture, global crop production and risk taking during a lecture at Ohio State University in October 2001. Borlaug is an agricultural geneticist. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his contributions to the "Green Revolution," a food production movement of the 1960s that helped lift many countries out of starvation through the introduction of high-yielding wheat varieties. He's lived in food-deprived countries for more than 55 years. Feeding the world has been possible because of agricultural technology, Borlaug said. Increased use of irrigation has made it possible to grow crops in areas that might not have been able to sustain them. Borlaug applauded the use of organic fertilizers but said they cannot replace chemical fertilizers.

March 25, 1914, Cresco, Iowa, U.S.), American agricultural scientist, plant pathologist, and winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1970. He was one of those who laid the groundwork of the so-called Green Revolution, the agricultural technological advance that promised to alleviate world hunger. He studied plant biology and forestry at the University of Minnesota and earned a Ph.D. in plant pathology there in 1941. From 1944 to 1960 he served as research scientist at the Rockefeller Foundation's Cooperative Mexican Agricultural Program in Mexico. At a research station at Campo Atizapan he developed strains of grain that dramatically increased crop yields. Wheat production in Mexico multiplied threefold in the time that he worked with the Mexican government; "dwarf" wheat imported in the mid-1960s was responsible for a 60 percent increase in harvests in Pakistan and India. He also created a wheat-rye hybrid known as triticale. The increased yields resulting from Borlaug's new strains enabled many developing countries to become agriculturally self-sufficient.

Norman E. Borlaug
3 min:07 secs Norman Borlaug's life is a tribute to what one person can do in the face of enormous obstacles: he has saved more lives than anyone in history. He has done it in the face of world wars, civil wars, famines, riots and bureaucratic obduracy. Norman Borlaug is the Father of the Green Revolution. In 1970, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work. Now in his mid-80's, Dr. Borlaug is still fiercely committed to the fundamental importance of feeding the world's people. ÝHe believes the ability to feed "the population monster" is central to civilization's survival. Human progress itself is at stake. In case you've forgotten, the Green Revolution made it possible to feed millions of people in India and Pakistan in the 1960's, people who otherwise would have starved to death. Grain yields were increased six fold. But the Green Revolution was about much more than just developing new seeds. Farmers had to learn how to plant those new seeds, how to fertilize the land, how to control the weeds and how to irrigate. Dr. Borlaug placed his bets on small farmers and won. Even as a Midwestern farm boy in the Depression, Norman Borlaug hated the site of human misery. That hasn't changed, though he's now seen enough misery world-wide to fill many lifetimes. He shares his sense of urgency when he talks about today's human misery and that which he anticipates if we cannot feed people. For starters, he's certain misery will not stay at home. You can't build peace on empty stomachs, he cautions. He's equally confident that if there is an "explosion" as he fears, not only will desperate people find their way across oceans and deserts, there will also be opportunists fishing in troubled waters.

Dr. Norman E. Borlaug
Nobel Prize-winning Agricultural Researcher
Presented in 1984 to: Dr. Norman E. Borlaug Dr. Norman Ernest Borlaug joined the Rockefeller Foundation staff in Mexico in 1944 to increase the production and productivity of Mexican wheats. This Iowa native continued as Director of the National Wheat Program in Mexico until the research center, Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de maiz y Trigo (CIMMYT), was formed in 1965. He continued as Director of Wheat Programs in CIMMYT until he retired in 1979. Dr. Borlaug devoted his energies to improvement of wheat for more than 30 years. He contributed more than any other person to the so-called "Green Revolution." This revolution made it possible to improve living conditions for hundreds of millions of people living in the developing countries. This eminent researcher is a man of ideals, and man of action. His writings reflect not only a fight against rust and weeds, but a strong outcry against bureaucracy and paperwork which interfere with rapid action. By his own admission, he is an impatient man and he does not readily accept the slow changes in the developing world. Yields of crops must increase rapidly, and he realizes that there is no time to waste, considering the magnitude of the problem of feeding the world's population. He has been honored by numerous institutions in the United States, Pakistan, India, Norway, Canada and many other countries. He serves on many boards and advises governments in the developing world on food production.

Meet Dr Norman Ernest Borlaug, Nobel Peace Prize winner, father of the Green Revolution, scientist, agriculturist, forester, farmer, but more importantly, a man with a mission: to alleviate hunger. To ensure that no one ever dies hungry. Ever. He was in India recently on a whirlwind week-long tour, visiting Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana to promote new varieties of fast growing high protein maize. He also found time to meet the President, the prime minister, the agriculture minister and, of course, the crème of Indian agro-scientists.

Norman Borlaug, the agronomist whose discoveries sparked the Green Revolution, has saved literally millions of lives, yet he is hardly a household name
by Gregg Easterbrook

MERICA has three living winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, two universally renowned and the other so little celebrated that not one person in a hundred would be likely to pick his face out of a police lineup, or even recognize his name. The universally known recipients are Elie Wiesel, who for leading an exemplary life has been justly rewarded with honor and acclaim, and Henry Kissinger, who in the aftermath of his Nobel has realized wealth and prestige. America's third peace-prize winner, in contrast, has been the subject of little public notice, and has passed up every opportunity to parley his award into riches or personal distinction. And the third winner's accomplishments, unlike Kissinger's, are morally unambiguous. Though barely known in the country of his birth, elsewhere in the world Norman Borlaug is widely considered to be among the leading Americans of our age.
