http://www.hk-phy.org/history/eng/bohr_e.html
Neils Bohr was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1885. His father was a very capable professor of physiology. His mother came from a rich Jewish family which was very active in banking, politics and education. They loved Bohr very much and helped him to fully develop his potentials.
In 1903, Bohr entered Copenhagen University to study physics. When he was still an undergraduate, his had already showed exceptional brilliance. By observing a jet of water, he could precisely calculate the surface tension of water. Bohr obtained his master degree in science in 1909 and Ph.D. degree in 1911. His Ph.D. thesis, A study on the theory of electrons in metals , qualitatively explained various properties of metals. He found inadequacies in the classical theory that make it insufficient to explain the magnetic properties of metals.
After his study at Copenhagen University, Bohr went to Cambridge University in England, in the hope of studying the theory of electron under the supervision of J.J. Thomson. However, J.J. Thomson was no longer interested in this problem. Bohr therefore immediately went to the University of Manchester and worked in E. Rutherford's laboratory. In 1913, he published three articles on the unification of the existing atomic model and the quantum theory, which laid a milestone in physics.
Bohr began his blessed marriage in 1912. In 1916, he became a professor at Copenhagen. In 1921, he founded the Institute of Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen. Bohr visited the U.S. in 1939 and announced that Copenhagen Laboratory had already confirmed the release of energy in the nuclear decay of Uranium. In 1940, Denmark was taken over by Germany. In 1943, the Allied forces arranged Bohr and his family to escape from Denmark. They first went to Sweden, then England, and finally arrived in the U.S.. In the U.S., he and his son, Aage, served as consultants for the National Laboratory at Los Alamos, where they contributed a lot to the production of the first atomic bomb. In 1945, Bohr was back to Copenhagen and worked on the peaceful use of atomic energy.

Niels Bohr was born in Copenhagen in Denmark in 1885. His father was a professor of physiology at the University of Copengagen. Niels attended the same university and was a distinguished soccer player as well as a brilliant student. Bohr studied at J. J. Thomson ´s Cavendish Laboratory and at Rutherford ´s laboratory. At the young age of 28, while working with Rutherford, he invented the first effective model and theory of the structure of the atom. His work ranks as one of the truly great examples of an imaginative mind at work. He was awarded the 1922 Nobel Prize for physics for his study of the structure of atoms. During Worls War 2, Bohr and his family escaped from occupied Denmark to the United States. He and his son, Aage, acted as advisers at the Los Alomos Atomic Laboratories, where the atom bomb was developed. Thereafter, Bohr concerned himself with developing peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Aage Bohr, Neil´s son was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1975.

Niels Bohr was one of the key physicists of the 1900s. With his creative ideas and positive attitude, he uncovered a new side of science. Niels Henrik David Bohr was born on October 7, 1885, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Christian Bohr, his father, was a physiology professor at the University of Copenhagen. Ellen Adler Bohr, Niels’s mother, was from a rich Jewish family involved in Danish banking. ( 7 ) While Bohr was young, his scientific talent was obvious. His family encouraged him to reach his full potential in this area. Niels's brother was very bright, also. Harald Bohr became a famous mathematician. ( 7 ) Return to Top
Niels entered the University of Copenhagen in 1903. He studied physics there. He also played soccer, like his brother. Niels’s brother won a silver medal with the Danish soccer team in the 1908 Olympics. ( 1 ) Niels Bohr also received a special award. He won a gold medal from the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters for his theoretical analysis of the vibrations of water jets to determine surface tension. In 1909 Bohr received his Master’s degree, and in 1911 he earned his doctorate. Shortly after, Bohr went to Cambridge, England, to study with J. J. Thompson. (Thompson discovered the electron 15 years before.) Thompson showed little enthusiasm in Bohr’s studies. Because of this, Bohr moved to Manchester, England, to do research with Ernest Rutherford. Bohr hoped to find out more about the properties of matter and atoms.
