Ishmael Reed's Konch Magazine Cecil Brown, Saul Bellow and the All American Life by H. S. Hamod First, let me say that I liked Cecil Brown's piece. It opened many memories
of Bellow, Chicago and growing up as an immigrant Arab-Muslim's sonnot to
mention the writing and academic life. But back to Cecil's piece: it's clean, hard-hitting and he makes his points
very well. He then ends with a resounding rhetorical question that's a
statementthat most of the immigrants, especially many Jews, that they wanted
to be WHITE (as in majority culture, as in no balls, as in no juice with
which to come). But when they put on those tight-fitting suits, ties and get all that
academic adoration, it suffices in place of a real living lifeat least for
those who buy into this bogus reality of the academic and "literary" world of
New York, the New York Review of Books and other such ilk. Hell, we're all going to die, and I'd rather live fully while here than to

Saul Bellow

Best Books of the Century Here
The best postwar American novel, The Adventures of Augie March (1953), magnificently terminates and fulfills the line of Melville, Twain, and Whitman," acclaimed James Wood in The New Republic. Nobel Laureate Saul Bellow's modern picaresque takes his unlikely heroa poor Chicago boyon a wild ride that grandly illustrates twentieth-century man's restless pursuit of an elusive meaning. Following the pursuits of a lifelong dreamer, this National Book Award winner written on a grand scale is a heroic comedy that celebrates life, both fantastic and realistic. From the inside flap
" The Adventures of Augie March is the great American novel. Search no further." Martin Amis, The Atlantic Monthly Originally published in 1953, Saul Bellow's modern picaresque tale grandly illustrates twentieth-century man's restless pursuit of an elusive meaning. Augie March, a young man growing up in Chicago during the Great Depression, doesn't understand success on other people's terms. Fleeing to Mexico in search of something to fill his restless soul and soothe his hunger for adventure, Augie latches on to a wild succession of occupations until his journey brings him full circle. Yet beneath Augie's carefree nature lies a reflective person with a strong sense of responsibility to both himself and others, who in the end achieves a success of his own making. A modern-day Columbus, Augie March is a man searching not for land but for self and soul and, ultimately, for his place in the world.

ARTS AND FILM BOSTON Boston University will feature a course taught by Saul Bellow next fall, but the Nobel Prize-winning author says his own works will not be included in the syllabus for the class on 20th-century fiction. Bellow, who currently teaches at the University of Chicago, has accepted the visiting post offered through the University Professor's Program, said spokeswoman Susan Tomassetti In addition to the modern fiction course, Bellow will give at least one public lecture, Arthur G. B. Metcalf, chairman of the university's board of trustees said in a letter announcing the appointment to students and parents. The student newspaper, Daily Free Press, reported that Bellow does not plan to assign his works as required reading for the 15 students who secure spots in his seminar-style course, "An Idiosyncratic Survey of 19th and 20th Century Fiction." The 73-year-old author's writings have won him the 1976 Nobel Prize for Literature, the Pulitzer Prize and three National Book Awards.

Full Review This slender book is Nobel laureate Saul Bellow's bloodless fictionalized memoirs of University of Chicago political philosopher Alan Bloom dying of AIDS in the mid-1990s, the time just before the protease, multi-drug combination therapy pulled many American HIV+ people back from the edge of the abyss of physical deterioration. It is devoid of suspense, but then, as far as I can tell, it is also devoid of purpose other than to vent yet again Saul Bellow's fear of strong women and non-white Americans. Along with his long-running misogyny and failure to consider the humanity of non-white people, he adds homosexuals to those whose humanity he cannot conceive. http://www.epinions.com/content_90907774596

    Nobel Laureate Bellow speaks Friday
Award-winning author scheduled to read from his fiction

    By Meghan Erica Irons
Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Saul Bellow will read from his fiction in Blackman Auditorium Friday as part of the College of Arts and Sciences' Nobel Laureate Speaker Series. Bellow, an English professor at Boston University, received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1976. One year prior to that, he won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for "Humboldt's Gift." He is scheduled to read at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Since his first novel, "Dangling Man," was published in 1944, Bellow has written more than a dozen novels and several short stories and plays. He's received three National Book Awards for "The Adventures of Augie March" (1953), "Herzog" (1964) and "Mr. Sammler's Planet" (1971). He is also the recipient of the Jewish Heritage Award and the French Croix de Chevalier des Arts et Lettres. Among his recent publications are "To Jerusalem and Back" (1976), "More Die of Heartbreak" (1987) and "It All Adds Up" (1993). His latest novel, "The Actual," was released in the spring of 1997.

Stanford Report, May 30, 2001 Steven Zipperstein connects the drama of Saul BellowÕs life to his literature BY MEREDITH ALEXANDER "If you don't give literature a decisive part to play in your existence, then you haven't got anything but a show of culture," American writer Saul Bellow once said in an interview. According to Steven Zipperstein, the Daniel E. Koshland Professor in Jewish Culture and History, literature has played a starring role in Bellow's existence. But his life also has been the scene of a more notorious drama: Bellow's tangled personal relationships his many marriages and infidelities have borne the brunt of critics' attacks. With a massive new biography of Bellow now blanketing bookstores James Atlas' Bellow: A Biography Zipperstein took the "nexus" between the writer's life and art as his theme for the last lecture in this year's History Department series "Twentieth-Century Lives" Thursday. Bellow sprang onto the literary scene in 1944 when he published Dangling Man . A series of acclaimed books followed, from

Bellow Saul Bellow (1915- ) Nobel Prize winning (1976) American novelist, author of such books as The Adventures of Augie March Henderson the Rain King, Herzog, Humbolt's Gift, Mr. Sammler's Planet, The Dean's December. During the seventies, Bellow developed an interest in Anthroposophy In a review of one of Barfield's books Bellow writes: "We are well supplied with interesting writers, but Owen Barfield is nor content to be merely interesting. His ambition is to set us free . . . from the prison we have made for ourselves by our ways of knowing, our limited and false habits of thought, our ' common sense .'" Ruth Miller's Saul Bellow: A Biography of the Imagination and James Atlas' Bellow A Biography both offer accounts of Bellow and Barfield's relationship. According to the online Saul Bellow Society and Journal During this period of time [of the writing of Humboldt's Gift (1975), Bellow registered in essay and fiction his final disapproval of Freud's notions on the unconscious and sought further understanding about meditative states and transcendental experience through his reading of Rudolph Steiner and Owen Barfield. He had begun his discussions on anthroposophy with Professor Le May, a trusted mentor, discussions which lasted until Le May's death in 1983. His relationship with the famous British anthroposophist, Barfield, seems to have been almost entirely one-sided. While Bellow sought understanding from Barfield, it seems that Barfield eschewed the mentor role and made at least two fairly public statements about how little Bellow's fiction moved or interested him. Nevertheless, Bellow had enrolled himself in the "theosophical kindergarten" in his attempts to penetrate the contemporary barriers to higher consciousness. The son of immigrant parents from Russia, Saul Bellow grew up in a Jewish ghetto of Montreal, Canada, where he learned Yiddish, Hebrew, English, and French. In 1924 his family moved to Chicago, a city that often appears in his fiction. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, in 1937 he entered the University of Wisconsin at Madison to study anthropology but left there in December to become a writer.
