Begin, Menachem (1913-1992) Perennial opposition leader who became prime minister (1977-1983) and signed the peace treaty with Egypt. Born in Brest Litovsk (now Byelorus), on August 16, 1913. He studied law at the University of Warsaw. Active in the Zionist movement, he became head of Betar in 1939. When the Germans invaded Poland, he fled to Lithuania, but was arrested and held in a Soviet concentration camp (1940-1941) until he joined a Polish army formed in the USSR to fight the Nazis. By 1942 he was in Palestine, where he became a commander of the Irgun Zvai Leumi, an underground group seeking to oust the British from Palestine by force. After British withdrawal, he was on the Irgun ship Altalena which approached Tel Aviv with a consignment of arms, contrary to the orders of the newly-formed Israel Defense Forces. The government ordered the ship to be shelled. Begin transformed the Irgun into the Herut (Freedom) party in the Knesset in 1948. In 1952 he led the party's protest against the reparations agreement with West Germany. On the eve of the Six Day War, he became a minister-without-portfolio in the national unity government. He left the government in 1970 when a majority in the government accepted the U.S.-sponsored concept of what was to become relinquishing territory for peace.

Begin, Menachem Menachem Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Poland on 16 August 1913, son of Zeev-Dov and Hassia Begin. He was educated at the Mizrachi Hebrew School and the Polish Gymnasium (High School). In 1931, he entered Warsaw University and took his law degree in 1935. Until the age of 13 he belonged to the Hashomer Hatza'ir scout movement, and at the age of 16 joined Betar (Brit Trumpeldor), the nationalist youth movement associated with the Zionist Revisionist Movement. In 1932 he became head of the Organization Department of Betar for Poland travelling on its behalf throughout the country, and contributing many articles to the revisionist press. He was sent to Czechoslovakia to head the movement there.
In 1937 he returned to Poland, and for a time was imprisoned for leading a demonstration, in front of the British Legation in Warsaw, protesting against British policy in Palestine. He organized groups of Betar members who went to Palestine as illegal immigrants, and in 1939 became the head of the movement in Poland. On the outbreak of World War II, he was arrested by the Russian authorities and in 1940-41 was confined in concentration camps in Siberia and elsewhere, but was released under the terms of the Stalin-Sikorski agreement. On his release he joined the Polish army and was transferred to the Middle East. After demobilization, in 1943, he assumed command of the Irgun Zvati Leumi (National Military Organization), known by the initials of its Hebrew name as "Etzel". In this capacity he directed Etzel's operations against the British, and the Palestine Government offered a reward of £ 10,000 for information leading to his arrest, but he evaded capture by living in disguise in Tel Aviv. In 1947, he met in secret with several members of the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine as well as the foreign press, to explain the outlook of his movement.

Menachem Begin Menachem Begin, writer Sidney Zion noted in 1983, “was run out of Poland by the Nazis, imprisoned by the Soviets, hunted by the British and nearly murdered by the Jews. To have survived would have been impressive enough. To have flourished- Begin led the first [Jewish nationalist] revolution in nearly 2,000 years [and] signed the first peace treaty in Israeli history- ranks as something of a miracle.” In all his years in opposition- as head of an underground movement denounced by the established Jewish leadership, for nearly three decades as leader of a party that lost eight Knesset elections- Menachem Begin never lost sight of the goal he moved to realize once he finally came to power as Israel’s sixth prime minister: a proud Jewish people, secure within their own state. Begin died of heart failure in 1992 at the age of 78. He had wanted “a simple Jewish funeral” and that is what was held 13 hours after he died at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv. He was buried in a simple ceremony on the Mount of Olives, beside his beloved wife, Aliza, who died in 1982. Begin had rejected the state funeral that was his due as prime minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983. Vice President Dan Quayle was poised to fly to Israel to represent the U.S. government at the ceremonies. So were former President Jimmy Carter and former Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, who worked closely with Begin during the Israeli- Egyptian peace process in the late 1970’s.

Menachem Begin
By Gerald Butt Menachem Begin was a hard man, who brought the Right in Israel to power for the first time. He was stern in manner, with the appearance of a schoolteacher rather than a statesman. But it was Begin's hard streak that gave him confidence to start the process of making peace with the Arabs. Begin was committed throughout his life to the cause of fighting anti-Semitism. In his view, this struggle justified the creation and defence of the Jewish state by any means necessary (even if this meant ordering an air attack on an Iraqi nuclear reactor, as he did in 1981). From the Russia of his childhood, Menachem Begin went to Poland to study. There he witnessed anti-Semitism first-hand and joined the youth wing of the hard-line Revisionist Zionist movement led by Ze'ev Jabotinsky. This movement abhorred the socialist ideology behind other wings of Zionism, and advocated strong leadership and discipline. In Palestine in 1940, Begin was incensed by British attempts to restrict immigration and instigated the underground military campaign against the mandate power. The British offered a reward for his capture, but they never caught him.

He joined Betar, the Revisionist Jewish youth movement in 1929. After the fall of Poland, Begin was incarcerated by the Russians. In 1942, he was released and went to Palestine in the uniform of a Polish soldier. In 1944, Begin became commander of the Irgun. This underground organization fought the British, and was often criticized for its extremist tactics. One of their most publicized actions was blowing up the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, which was serving as a British military headquarters. After the Declaration of Independence, Begin and his group submitted to the authority of the new state and agreed to disband their organization. Begin was elected to the first Knesset as the leader of the Herut Party. He remained in the opposition until 1967, when his party joined a unity government. In 1969, Herut resigned from the government over a disagreement on negotiating platforms.

Begin 1938-ban a lengyelországi Betart képviselte a szervezet varsói Világkonferenciáján, amikor is a Betar "állampolgári esküjét" azzal a kitétellel módosították, hogy a Zsidó Otthont erõvel fogják elfoglalni.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Begin, Menachem Israeli politician. He was leader of the extremist Irgun Zvai Leumi organization in Palestine from 1942 and prime minister of Israel 197783, as head of the right-wing Likud party. Following strong encouragement from US president Jimmy Carter , he entered into negotiations with President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, which resulted in the Camp David Agreements. He shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1978 with Anwar Sadat for their efforts towards the Israel-Egypt peace treaty of 1979. In 1981 Begin won a new term of office but his health was failing. The death of his wife in 1982 was a grave blow, resulting in his retirement in September 1983. For the rest of his life he was a virtual recluse. Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Russia (now Brest, in Belarus), studied law in Warsaw, and fled to the USSR in 1939. As leader of the Irgun group, he was responsible in 1946 for a bomb attack at the King David Hotel, Jerusalem, which killed over 100 people.

Menachem Begin
Israel's sixth Prime Minister, Menachem Begin, was born in Brisk (now Brest-Litovsk), then part of the Russian Empire, on August 16, 1913. Menachem Begin was the youngest of three children born to Zev Dov and Hassia Begin. The Begin family was uprooted from Brisk by World War I and fled into Russia. At the war's conclusion, the Begins returned to Brisk and to an independent Poland. Following the completion of his education at a local public high school, Menachem Begin enrolled in Warsaw University in 1931 and was granted a law degree in 1935. A popular orator among Jewish students in Warsaw, Mr. Begin worked full-time on behalf of the Betar Zinoist youth movement in Poland following his graduation. He became head of Polish Betar in 1939, one of the most influential positions of leadership in pre-Holocaust Jewish Europe. At the onset of World War II, Mr. Begin encouraged the emigration of thousands of Polish Jews to the Land of Israel just as the country's gates were being shut by the British mandatory government. Mr. Begin continued his Zionist organizational work until he was arrested by Soviet occupation authorities in 1940. He remained in Gulag prison camps, mostly in Siberia, until 1941, when he was freed with other Polish prisoners. Upon release, Mr. Begin joined the Polish army-in-exile, and was assigned to a unit that was dispatched to the Middle East. His parents and older brother remained trapped in Poland and perished in the Holocaust.
