Beckett, Samuel 1906-89, Anglo-French playwright and novelist, b. Dublin. Beckett studied and taught in Paris before settling there permanently in 1937. He wrote primarily in French, frequently translating his works into English himself. His first novel, Murphy (1938), typifies his later works by eliminating the traditional elements of plot, character, and setting. Instead, he presents the experience of waiting and struggling with a pervading sense of futility. The anguish of persisting in a meaningless world is intensified in Beckett's subsequent novels including Watt (1942-44); the trilogy Molloy Malone Dies (1951), and The Unnamable How It Is (1961); and The Lost Ones (1972). In his theater of the absurd, Beckett combines poignant humor with an overwhelming sense of anguish and loss. Best-known and most controversial of his dramas are Waiting for Godot (1952) and Endgame (1957), which have been performed throughout the world. Beckett's other works include a major study of Proust (1931); the plays Krapp's Last Tape (1959) and Happy Days (1961); a screenplay

    CELEBRATING BECKETT
Sydney celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot
Samuel Beckett, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969, was one of the twentieth century's foremost writers and dramatists. His work as a whole, by turns bleak and blackly humorous, at once gives voice to suffering humanity, and calls on us to question the nature of things. The first performance of En Attendant Godot Waiting for Godot ) in January 1953 is considered one of the central events in the history of contemporary theatre. The image of two tramps caught in a moment, waiting for an event of uncertain significance has left an indelible impression on the consciousness of the West, and gave expression to a post-war sense of disorientation and disquiet that the distance of half a century has not subdued. Beckett's prose and stage works continue to appeal to artists beyond the realms of literature and theatre, eliciting creative responses across the arts and humanities, ranging from sound and visual arts to philosophy, social criticism and ethics.
    Celebration
We are proud to announce that Sydney will host a series of events of international significance celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the first performance of

Astride of a grave and a difficult birth. Down in the hole, lingeringly, the grave digger puts on the forceps. We have time to grow old. The air is full of our cries. Waiting for Godot Samuel Barclay Beckett was born without difficulty at Cooldrinach in Foxrock, County Dublin, on 13 April 1906, but grew old enough to fill the air with many different cries. He was the second of two sons of a middle-class Protestant couple (his father managed a surveying firm) and grew up away from the rebellion waged nearby. Though quite energetic, he enjoyed even as a small boy the quiet of solitude. He studied at Earlsfort House in Dublin, and then at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen (where Oscar Wilde had gone) where he first began to learn French, one of the two languages in which he would write. A well-rounded athlete, Beckett excelled especially in cricket, tennis, and boxing in his school days. Though he continued with sports, his attention turned increasingly to academics when at 17 he entered Trinity College, choosing French and Italian as his subjects. Beckett enjoyed the vibrant theater scene of post-independence Dublin, preferring revivals of J.M. Synge plays. Moreover, he had the opportunity to watch American films and discover the silent comedies of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin that would crucially influence his interest in the vaudevillian tramp.

Ireland has a long history of formal learning - hence the title " Island of Saints and Scholars "- but not necessarily a reputation for producing masterpieces of art . Rehashing established conventions has often been valued more highly than innovation in this country; Ireland has never really had an avant garde artistic movement as such for example. During the

from Waiting for Godot The Irish-born playwright and novelist Samuel Beckett , b. Dublin, Apr. 13, 1906, d. Dec. 22, 1989, is best known for the absurdist drama Waiting for Godot (1952; Eng. trans., 1954). First performed in Paris on Jan. 5, 1953, the play received worldwide acclaim and became the first of a series of critical successes, some of them written earlier. Life Beckett came from a Protestant Anglo-Irish family, but much of his work was first written in French. After graduating with a degree in Romance languages from Trinity College, Dublin, Beckett spent two years (1928-30) in Paris as an exchange lecturer. Here he met James Joyce and became a member of his circle. In 1930, Beckett returned to Trinity as a lecturer. The academic life did not agree with him, however, and he left after only four terms to become a free-lance writer. He traveled in Europe and England, settling finally in Paris, his intermittent home since 1937. Writings Beckett's entire literary output, the narrative prose as well as the dramatic works, reduces basic existential problems to their most essential features. Thus his concerns are fundamental, but never simplisticthe evanescence of life; time and eternity; the individual's sense of loneliness and alienation as a result of the impossibility of establishing genuine communication and contact with others; the mystery of self.
