Chris Stringer About Overview Sponsors Conference sponsors Home In his posed pictures he manages a slight smile, which belies the nature of this controversial, tough and outstanding scientist; winner at 37 of the Nobel prize for his work in virology, president of the California Institute of Technology, and in his home country of the United States described as one of the most influential biologists of his generation. Among the luminaries at the seminal congress on the Human Genome and Africa, Professor David Baltimore is arguably the most famous. Not only does he do science; he believes and has dedicated his life to training scientists and improving research facilities. This year is the 50th celebration of James Watson and Francis Crick’s discovery of "the secret of life", the double helix structure of DNA, a discovery of the genetic code for which they received the Nobel prize and which, as it was put, "has transformed science, medicine and much of modern life," and will change it even further in future. Dr Baltimore will chair the plenary session on Thursday March 20, with its subject

We might not have anything like the biotechnology industry before us today. But despite his scientific achievements, Baltimore's outspoken advocacy for science-based public policy and for his colleagues got him into some trouble in the past. After a decade of controversy, this Nobel Laureate has finally regained his wings, presiding over one of the highest academic posts in the US, the presidency of Caltech. By B.J. Spalding

Search: News Resources Jobs Companies Diseases Events Expert Glossary David Baltimore: Future of the Ivory Tower David Baltimore is a Nobel Laureate and the president of the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, CA). "Post World War II, we've come to recognize, I think almost universally, the tremendous power that basic research brings to industry. We now realize that basic research isn't just the sort of theoretical investigation of properties of matter and properties of living systems and the like. Even though we can't tell how, beforehand, basic research is going to impact industry, we know it will. We've just seen it over and over again, and we know it will continue. "That very realization changes the nature of science. Students can no longer say to themselves, 'I'm going into science, and I'm going to have to leave the world to do it.' Going into science, you can as easily as not find yourself at the center of controversy, of politics, of almost anything. So science is an integral part of it all. Scientists are just simply not as other worldly as they were when I went into science.

The second part of the book follows the parallel rise of David Baltimore as a scientific leader and manager. Baltimore’s lab became famous for its contributions to the study of oncogenes, the characterization of the molecular mechanisms responsible for antibody diversity and the study of gene regulation. But Baltimore was also one of the main actors in the recombinant DNA controversy and played a key role in the organization of the national fight against AIDS. In addition, he was the founder of the Whitehead Institute at MIT and has been president of both Rockefeller University and, more recently, the California Institute of Technology. The last third of the book is devoted to the “Baltimore Affair,” a protracted investigation of alleged scientific fraud. This has already been extensively analyzed by Daniel J. Kevles in
