The information has been gathered from a wide variety of sources, and the nationality indicated for each laureate is my best determination of where the relevant work was done. Included for each year are the names and "nationalities" of the recipients, the commendation for the award, and bibliographic citations from the SPIRES HEP databases (including the full text of acceptance speeches, where available). Short history of plasma physics
Otto von Guericke, mayor of Magdeburg, publishes his experiments on the vacuum pump. Francis Hauksbee performs experiments on luminous phenomena in evacuated glass spheres. Johann Heinrich Winkler repeats Hauksbee's experiments in Erfurt (Germany). Benjamin Franklin invents the lightning rod. Georg Christoph Lichtenberg doscovers the discharge figures that now carry his name. Carl Friedrich Gauss conjectures that the small daily variations of the Earth's magnetic field are caused by electric currents in a conductive layer of the upper atmosphere. Likewise he relates the Northern Lights with a kind of moving electricity. Michael Faraday systematically investigates the current flow in rarefied gases. Johann Wilhelm Hittorf discovers cathode rays. William Crookes speculates that cathode rays consist of electrically charged molecules of the filling gas. Heinrich Hertz fails to measure the deflection of cathode rays in an electric field and to detect the magnetic field generated by the cathode rays. Arthur Schuster determines the charge to mass ratio of the particles by bending the cathode rays with a magnetic field into a circle.

Item Description U/M Price Item# Chart - Laminated - Solar Spectrum This hansome wall chart, covering the visible portion of the solar spectrum, shows the location of the more prominent Fraunhofer lines. These darklines, some narrow and some wide, are caused by the absorption of specific frequencies within the atmosphere of the earth or sun. Both colorful and informative, this chart makes an excellant teaching aid for any science classroom. This durable chart (seen above) is printed on heavy paper stock and is fitted with metal binding strips at top and bottom. The upper strip includes tabes suitable for wall haning. Chart dimention is 71cm x 28cm. each Chart - Laminated - Spectrum Analysis This chart shows the visible continuous spectrum of the sun and the emission or bright line spectra of ten relatively common elements. It provides an excellant beginning point to show the student the total individuality of the spectrum of each element. It also presents an opportunity to discuss the general relationship between the number of lines and the number of atomic shell electrons.

Twenty years of study on the ozone layer have resulted in the first Nobel Prize ever awarded to atmospheric chemists. Receiving the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry are Paul Crutzen (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz, Germany), Mario Molina (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and F. Sherwood Rowland (University of California, Irvine). All three scientists are regular visitors to the Atmospheric Chemistry Division (ACD) of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), which is operated in Boulder, Colorado, by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research under sponsorship of the National Science Foundation.

79. Bradford
nobel Prizewinner sir edward victor appleton, he received the nobelPrize for physics in 1947. Astronomer Professor sir Fred Holye.
http://www.stockdill.freeserve.co.uk/bradford/
Bradford City Hall. It's hard to imagine that Bradford, a giant among industrial towns, is less than an hours drive away from the Yorkshire Dales. The city used to be the wool capital of the world. Much of the splendid Victorian architecture remains today. The city has come in for a lot of stick over the years, but has emerged almost unscathed. There is plenty to see and do in and around Bradford, now a cosmopolitan city. On a single web page it's difficult to relate this diverse city with a population of around half a million. Because of its multi-cultural inhabitants, you can dine on the finest Asian cuisine in the land!
The city was born of the Industrial Revolution. You can still see rows and rows of terraced houses and mill chimneys dotting the skyline. The Town Hall (now City Hall) was built between 1870 and 1873. It is said to be modelled on the campanile (bell tower) of the Palazzo Vecchio in the city of Florence, Italy. At the front of the building you will see 35 life-size statues of kings and queens of England, starting with William the Conqueror. Elizabeth I, Victoria, Charles II and William II are also there. The only non-Royal is Oliver Cromwell. The mill chimney at 'Listers' is a great monument to the once thriving textile industry. It weighs 8,000 tonnes and is 250 feet high. It was Christened 'Lister's Pride' and has been likened to the campanile of San Marco in Venice.

From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . So let me invite you to follow our two Spring Students on another, this time not political but scientific, trip across our continent.
