Describing Annan as "a tireless worker for peace", Prime Minister Antonio Guterres said Portugal, East TimorÈs former colonial ruler, would "not forget" the UN chief´s efforts "to create conditions for the freedom and independence of the East Timorese people". Lisbon`s Foreign Minister Jaime Gama told Lusa it was important not only Ximenses Belo and Ramos Horta (who jointly won the award in 1996) received recognition for their part in putting East Timor on the road to independence. Gama sent a congratulatory letter to Annan and the UN. In Dili, the UN-administered territory´s chief minister, Mari Alkatiri, told Lusa Annan´s rise to UN leadership in 1997 signaled "new forms" of diplomatic action in the struggle for independence.

LONDON, England (CNN) The Nobel Peace Prize for 2001 has been awarded jointly to the United Nations and its
secretary-general, Kofi Annan.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, based in Oslo, said they made the award in recognition of their work for a
better-organized and more peaceful world.
U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard said the award, which has never before been given to the entire U.N., was a great boost
for the organization.
"It is a great recognition of the work the secretary general has done in the last five years, and a big boost for the next five," he said. In a statement, committee chairman Gunnar Berge said: "For one hundred years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to strengthen organized cooperation between states.

a Onu e Kofi Annan

Nobel Peace Prize 2001 awarded to the United Nations and to its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan VIENNA , 12 October (UN Information Service) The following is the text of the press release issued today by the Norwegian Nobel Committee: The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001, in two equal portions, to the United Nations (UN) and to its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world. For one hundred years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to strengthen organized cooperation between states. The end of the cold war has at last made it possible for the UN to perform more fully the part it was originally intended to play. Today the organization is at the forefront of efforts to achieve peace and security in the world, and of the international mobilization aimed at meeting the world's economic, social and environmental challenges. Kofi Annan has devoted almost his entire working life to the UN. As Secretary-General, he has been pre-eminent in bringing new life to the organization.

Thorvald Stoltenberg, President of the Norwegian Red Cross, presented UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his wife Nane with the "Torstein Dales" memorial prize.
"Poverty and inequality are root causes of conflict and obstacles to peaceful development. The Red Cross Red Crescent struggles for peace every day through our network of millions of volunteers", said Federation President Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro.
"Economic exploitation creates vulnerability. Inequalities in terms of trade, in people's access to labour markets, to health and education, influence their possibility to make a livelihood. The consequences are on the agenda of the International Federation," pointed out Didier Cherpitel in the Nobel Prize Symposium.

October 18, 1999. Dear Mr. Kofi A. Annan,
Mr. Trent Lott,
Mr. Denny Hastert, Beijing interrupt Nobel Peace Prize committee, because it was angry about the upcoming award may be given to a Chinese dissident. BEIJING, Oct. 15 -
Mainland Chinese dissidents put on brave face Friday after the Nobel Committee overlooked Chinese democracy activists in the naming of the 1999 winner of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. Exiled democracy activists Wei Jingsheng and Wang Dan were rumored to have been in the running for the prize, heightening hopes that one of them would win the prestigious award. Instead the Nobel Committee named the humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders as the winners of the 1999 prize. "It would have been good if we would have won, but as we didn't it doesn't matter. We will continue to make efforts for more democracy in China through non-violent and legal measures," He Depu member of the outlawed-China Democracy Party told AFP.
