the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. Hannes Alfven, winner of the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physics, acknowledged as one of creative and intuitive intellect's of the 20th century, died peacefully Sunday evening, April 2, 1995 in Stockholm, Sweden. He was 86 years old.
In the world of specialized science, Alfven was an enigma. Regarded as a heretic by many physicists, Alfven made contributions to physics that are today being applied in the development of particle beam accelerators, controlled thermonuclear fusion, hypersonic flight, rocket propulsion, and the braking of reentering space vehicles. At the same time, applications of his research in space science include explanations of the Van Allen radiation belt, the reduction of the earth's magnetic field during magnetic storms, the magnetosphere (a protective plasma envelope surrounding the earth), the formation of comet tails, the formation of the solar system, the dynamics of plasmas in our galaxy, and the fundamental nature of the universe itself.
Alfven was the first to predict (in 1963) the large scale filamentary structure of the universe, a discovery that confounded astrophysicists in 1991 and added to the woes of Big Bang cosmology. Hannes Alfven has played a central role in the development of several modern fields of physics, including plasma physics, the physics of charged particle beams, and interplanetary and magnetospheric physics. He is also usually regarded as the father of the branch of plasma physics known as magnetohydrodynamics.

Hannes Alfven Papers
Scope / Content Note
Papers of Hannes Alfven, scientist, Nobel Prize recipient in the field of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and author. Alfven pioneered theoretical research in the field of magnetohydrodynamics, the study of the interaction of conducting fluids and magnetic fields, for which he received the 1970 Nobel Prize in physics with Louis Neel. The materials in this collection relate primarily to Alfven's work at UCSD and include correspondence, manuscripts, class materials, published and unpublished papers, notes and computations, photographs, and subject files. The collection is divided into ten series: 1) BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIALS, 2) WRITINGS, 3) CORRESPONDENCE, 4) PUGWASH, 5) COMMITTEE ON SOLAR-TERRESTRIAL RESEARCH, 6) SUBJECT FILES, 7) GRANTS, 8) TEACHING MATERIALS, 9) MEETINGS AND SYMPOSIA and 10) PHOTOGRAPHS. SERIES 1: BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIALS This series is arranged alphabetically and contains substantial biographical as well as bibliographical materials from the principal stages of Alfven's professional career. Also included are various award certificates and a comprehensive file of correspondents and fellow scientists. SERIES 2: WRITINGS This series is divided into two subseries, "Writings of Alfven" and "Writings of Others," both of which are arranged in alphabetical order. Almost all of Alfven's better-known monographs and publications are represented in progressive draft forms, some with original computations and related charts and figures. Highlighted in the first subseries is the great extent to which Alfven collaborated with diverse and eminent scientists on projects which expanded traditional scientific thought. The second subseries is comprised solely of papers written by others which were annotated by Alfven. This series, in addition to showing Alfen's wide array of political and scientific interests, illustrates his strong critical engagement with students and peers.

MSS 0225 Mandeville Special Collections Library Geisel Library University of California, San Diego Papers of Hannes Olof Gosta Alfven, Nobel Prize winning astrophysicist who contributed to significant advances in the fields of magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics, geophysics, thermonuclear reaction, and cosmology. He shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Louis Neel in 1970. Alfven developed many controversial theories explaining the behavior of interstellar magnetic fields, debunking the "big bang," and attempting to rewrite the history of the solar system. Though initially ignored or rejected, many of his ideas were later extremely influential in revolutionizing the disciplines of astrophysics and geophysics. He was also an advocate of nuclear armaments destruction, working actively with other scientists such as Harold Urey to prevent nuclear proliferation and conflict. Among Alfven's teaching positions were posts at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and the University of California, San Diego. The papers span the years 1945 to 1991 and are organized into ten series: 1) BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIALS, 2) WRITINGS, 3) CORRESPONDENCE, 4) PUGWASH, 5) COMMITTEE ON SOLAR-TERRESTRIAL RESEARCH, 6) SUBJECT FILES, 7) GRANTS, 8) TEACHING MATERIALS, 9) MEETINGS AND SYMPOSIA, and 10) PHOTOGRAPHS. The collection contains significant correspondence with Alfven's fellow scientists, including Gustaf Arrhenius, C.G. Falthammar, and Harold Urey, as well as substantial photographic documentation of Alfven's studies of the solar system. The collection focuses primarily on Alfven's time as Professor of Applied Physics at the University of California, San Diego, but nearly every work from his immense bibliography is represented, many in draft forms. Absent from the collection is any extensive documentation of Alfven's personal life.

Education
"Since religion intrinsically rejects empirical methods, there should never be any attempt to reconcile scientific theories with religion he said. An infinitely old universe, always evolving, may not, he admited, be compatible with the Book of Genesis. However, religions such as Buddhism get along without having any explicit creation mythology and are in no way contradicted by a universe without a beginning or end. Creatio ex nihilo, even as religious doctrine, only dates to around AD 200" he noted. The key is not to confuse myth and empirical results, or religion and science." PERSONAL AND PUBLIC LIFE

European Geophysical Society Hannes Alfvén Hannes Alfvén, Nobel Laureate for Physics and Honorary Member of the European Geophysical Society, died 2 April 1995 in his home in Djursholm, Sweden.
Born on 30 May 1908 in Norrköping, Sweden, Hannes Alfvén had a swift academic career marked by doctorate at age 26 and appointment as full professor at the Royal Institute of Technology at age 32.
As professor he gathered around him a growing number of scientists, engineers and students, to whom he was an exceptionally inspiring and generous leader, spreading fruitful ideas around him without any claim to co-authorship of publications deriving from them. His vigorous scientific activity led to a rapid expansion and to the creation of a number of new professorships and departments. The three departments that most directly trace their origin to his work now form a separate entity within the Royal Institute of Technology, the Alfvén Laboratory , founded in 1990.
In 1967 Hannes Alfvén accepted a professorship at the University of California, San Diego. But every year he spent the time "from the Vernal Equinox until the Autumnal Equinox" in Sweden in very active scientific interaction with his colleagues at the Royal Institute of Technology. His annual return was always something to look forward to.
Already at a young age Hannes Alfvén had become interested in cosmical physics. As a graduate student he developed a theory of the origin of cosmic radiation, published in Nature in 1933. This paper, like all his subsequent work, was based on the principle that theories of cosmical phenomena must agree with results from laboratory experiments on Earth, because the same laws of Nature should apply everywhere.

http://www.marxist.com/science/inmemory.html
In Memory of Hannes Alfven Shortly before this book went to print, we learned the sad news of the death of the Swedish Novel Prize winning physicist Hannes Alfvén. In addition to his important discoveries in the field of plasma physics and cosmology, Alfvén waged a tireless struggle against mystical and idealist tendencies in science. We publish below a brief tribute by the American physicist and independent researcher Eric J. Lerner, author of The Big Bang Never Happened: Hannes Alfvén was one of the outstanding minds of the twentieth century and will, one day, be ranked with Einstein as one who changed our view of the universe. It was a great privilege to have known him. To Alfvén, the most critical difference between his approach and that of the Big Bang cosmologists was one of method. " When men think about the universe, there is always a conflict between the mythical and the empirical scientific approach," he explained. "In myth, one tries to deduce how the gods must have created the world, what perfect principle must have been used." This, he said, is the method of conventional cosmology today: to begin from a mathematical theory, to deduce from that theory how the universe must have begun, and to work forward from the beginning to the present-day cosmos. The Big Bang fails scientifically because it seeks to derive the present, historically formed universe from a hypothetical perfection in the past. All the contradictions with observation stem from this fundamental flaw.

SUCCESSFUL PREDICTIONS MEAN LITTLE IN SCIENCE
Many maverick scientists make the pages of Science Frontiers because they are the ones who deviate from the mainstream. They pursue those Anomalies that the Sourcebook Project filters from the great river of scientific literature. But enough fluvial allusions! The maverick here is, again, H. Alfven. We first met Alfven in SF#59,where we commented on his paper "Memoirs of a Dissident Scientist." Alfven is still a dissident, a scientist who has the temerity to claim that cosmic rays have a local rather than galactic origin. Even more heretical is his assertion that electromagnetic forces have shaped the universe rather than the Big Bang! The subject of this entry is not so much Alfven's conflicts with accepted scientific views, but rather whether correct scientific predictions really influence the scientific community's acceptance of theories. This, after all, is what science is all about. It turns out that Alfven has made many correct scientific predictions. (He even shared a Nobel Prize in 1970.) But, as S.G. Brush has related in a detailed article in Eos , being correct is not the same as being accepted.
