Associated Press Writer OCTOBER 10, 10:35 EDT Also Tuesday, the chemistry prize went to two Americans and a Japanese scientist for their discoveries that plastic can be made electrically conductive. The work by winners Alan J. Heeger , Alan G. MacDiarmid and Hideki Shirakawa has spurred improvements in film, TV screens and windows and could eventually lead to a host of new technologies, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said. ``The physics prizes are about the electronics of today and the chemistry prizes are about the electronics of the future,'' academy member Per Ahlberg said. In physics, Zhores I. Alferov of the A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Herbert Kroemer , a German-born researcher at the University of California at Santa Barbara , will share half the prize for work in developing technology used in satellite communications and cellular phones.

!!! Press Release !!! The Nobel Prize Committee has awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physics to Professor Kroemer, who holds an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Aachen, for his key role in developing the compound semiconductors used by today's communications-based society
Dr. Holger Juergensen, President of AIXTRON AG's: "This prize is impressive evidence of how the findings of the targeted research conducted back then can be used in everyday applications. We would like to warmly congratulate the prizewinners. These experts' fundamental research has had a positive effect on the success of both our customers and our company" AIXTRON's success and its unique global positioning are based on the company's ability to rapidly convert the results of fundamental research into useable technologies. The company's team of experts, which is growing constantly and enjoys worldwide recognition, develops equipment used in the manufacture of compound semiconductors and other multi-component materials. These materials are currently used by all well-known electronics groups (e.g. Agilent, Nortel, Siemens, JDS Uniphase, Lucent, Ericsson, Philips) worldwide. As the world market leader with a global market share of 54% in 1999 (1998: 51%), AIXTRON provides the first technological step - and a mission-critical one at that - for a wide range of microelectronic and optoelectronic applications in rapidly expanding markets. Elõször idézzük a bejelentés szövegét. "A Svéd Királyi Tudományos Akadémia úgy határozott, hogy a 2000. évi Fizikai Nobel-díjjal azokat a tudósokat és feltalálókat díjazza, akik munkája a modern információtechnika (IT) alapjait fektette le gyors tranzisztorok, lézerdiódák és integrált áramkörök felfedezésével. A díj felét megosztva Zhores I. Alferov (A.F. SAN FRANCISCO Two of the fathers of the Internet, honored with Nobel prizes this week, defended public funding of basic research as key to unlocking future applications that society hasn't even dreamed of. Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments Inc. (stock: TXN ), who invented the integrated circuit, and Professor Herbert Kroemer of the University of California, Santa Barbara, who devised semiconductor heterostructures, won the physics prize. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences also conferred a physics prize on Russian scientist Zhores I. Alferov, who worked in parallel but separately from Kroemer on heterostructures. The physics award, announced in Stockholm, Sweden, carries a $915,000 prize, of which Kilby will receive half; Kroemer and Alferov will split the other half.

Alumnus Kilby receives Noble Prize
First ECE graduate to win world's top scientific award By Laura Schmitt
U of I electrical engineering alumnus Jack Kilby (BSEE ’47) received the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics on December 10 in an award ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden. Kilby was recognized for his part in the invention and development of the integrated circuit (IC), which he first demonstrated on September 12, 1958, while at Texas Instruments.
The ECE department will be hosting a campus symposium April 18 to honor Kilby. More information about this event is available at www.ece.uiuc.edu/kilby
Kilby shared the prize with Zhores Alferov and Herbert Kroemer, who developed semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed micro- and optoelectronics. Alferov is a researcher at the A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was a visiting scientist at the U of I, working in ECE Professor Nick Holonyak Jr.’s lab on heterostructure devices from 1970 to 1971. Kroemer is a researcher at the University of California at Santa Barbara. All three inventors’ work has laid a stable foundation for modern information technology.
“The birth date of the [IC] is one of the most important birth dates in the history of technology,” said Tord Claeson, member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, at the prize award ceremony. Kilby’s invention enabled the microelectronics field to grow to become the basis of all modern technology. ICs, or microchips, are pervasive in such things as computers, space probes, cars, medical diagnostic equipment, and electronic watches.

Institute of Physics Fellow receives Nobel Prize for physics
The Institute of Physics is delighted that Professor Zhores Ivanovich Alferov, a Fellow of the Institute and Director of the A F Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St. Petersberg, is one of three physicists awarded this year's Nobel Prize for physics. Alferov has been awarded his prize for "developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed- and opto-electronics." With the Russian editorial office of Institute of Physics Publishing situated in the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, Professor Alferov has had close ties with the Institute for many years, and regularly publishes his work in the Institute journals, Semiconductor Science and Technology, and Nanotechnology. Currently, he has three papers in press with the Institute of Physics. The Institute's Russian editorial office was established in 1990 and gathers scientific papers from Russia for Institute of Physics journals. Scientific staff at the Ioffe have worked closely with the Institute for many years. Relations between the Institute of Physics and the Ioffe were reinforced when Professor Alferov came to speak at a conference of all editors of the Institute journals held at the University of Bath in 1999. He gave a plenary lecture about nano-scale physics research in Russia and captivated his audience with an account of the history and politics of science funding in his country.
