Stanford, Sir Charles Villiers ( b Dublin, 30 September, 1852 - d London, 29 March, 1924)
Stanford was educated at Cambridge (1880-4) where he returned in 1873 as the organist of Trinity College, and then later appointed as professor in 1887. From 1883, he also taught at the Royal College of Music (his own education having been complete under Reinecke in Leipzig (1874-5), and Kiel in Berlin (1876)).
Apart from his Anglican cathedral music, little of his large output (nearly 200 opus numbers) has remained in performance. His works include ten operas (notably Shamus O'Brien (1896), Much ado about nothing (1901), and The travelling companion (1926)), partsongs (from which The blue bird is still remembered), seven symphonies, and other orchestral scores (including the Clarinet Concerto (1902), and a series of Irish Rhapsodies), eight string quartets, and organ and piano music.

Born in Dublin in 1852, Charles Villiers Stanford established himself in England as a leading figure in the musical life of the country, appointed professor of composition at the Royal College of Music in London at its foundation in 1883 and four years later elected to the chair of music at Cambridge. As a composer he was among the most influential in England in the second half of the nineteenth century, writing music in many genres, including a substantial body of organ music, reflecting in technique something of the formal training he had had as a student in Leipzig and Berlin. At the opening of the Royal College of Music in 1883 he was made professor of composition, and from 1885 until 1902 he was conductor of the London Bach Choir. furiant finale unrelated thematically to what had gone before, Stanford leads, again without a break, into a finale which is actually a recapitulation, albeit greatly varied, of the first movement themes. Since for good cyclic measure he also includes a reference to the slow movement, the whole work (which he claimed to be in a single movement) combines the freedom of a rhapsody with the discipline of a symphony. Happily, this formal mastery is combined with his invention at its most free-flowing and poetic, and the result is a gem of a concerto which should be in the repertoire of clarinettists all round the world. The present recording is a reissue of the first of the three which have so far been made (notable clarinettists who have played it and not recorded it include Alan Hacker and Jack Brymer - BBC Legends could oblige with the latter if they felt like it). Dame Thea is the widow of Frederick Thurston who, as a gifted young student, played the work under Stanford's direction and was thereafter the one artist who continued to give an occasional airing. Perhaps for this reason she has a slightly proprietorial feeling about it (I don't know how many performances she has given but I remember a BBC performance with Ashley Lawrence a few years before this recording). Alun Francis in his notes describes how he took the trouble to correct a number of discrepancies between the available scores and in fact there is a strong sense that the performance has been very thoroughly prepared

In 1887 he was also appointed Professor of Music at Cambridge University, the same year that his Symphony no.3, (the "Irish"), earned him an international reputation. He held both posts jointly until 1923. He was conductor and director of the English Bach Choir from 1885-1902 and the conductor of Leeds Philharmonic Society and Festival, 1901-1910. He was knighted in 1902 and received honorary degrees from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge (Mus. D.), Durham (D.C.L.) and Leeds (LL.D.). Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924)
    Lebenslauf

C Faust Alto Rhapsody As a conductor he early made his mark, and in addition to countless Festival and other engagements in England and on the Continent, he held the post of conductor to the Bach Choir (1885-1902) and Leeds Philharmonic Society (1897-1910). He received the honorary degree of Mus. Doc. at Oxford in 1883, and at Cambridge in 1888. The honour of knighthood was conferred on him in 1901, and in 1904 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts at Berlin. Like most British composers, his larger compositions have rarely had the attention they deserve. Yet few will deny that his symphonies and other orchestral works are infinitely better, and far more attractive, than stacks of things that are played to rags year in, year out. And are not and The Critic still worthy of the attention of our opera companies? Among choralists his position is secure. No church choir is likely to exhaust the interest and effect of his service music and anthems. His Service in B flat, with its skilful and significant use of fragments of plain-chant, was something new in English church music, and wears as too little of the repertory does. Choral societies, large and small, will long revel in
