The Films of John Woo and the Art of Heroic Bloodshed John Woo was born in 1946 in Mainland China, the son of Christian parents. At the age of five, his family moved to Hong Kong to escape the Cultural Revolution, where they struggled for a number of years, having to live in the streets for a short period of time. In those days, his mother would take him to the theater to watch Western cinema, which inspired the young John Woo to be a film-maker. After leaving high school, he hooked up a group of students who shared a passion for film. They would screen European arthouse films, discuss what they had seen, and eventually, they began to make their own films. In 1969, Woo got his first big break as a script supervisor in Cathay Studios. He followed that up in 1971 with a move up to assistant director in the famous Shaw Studios, where he was mentored by Chang Cheh, who taught him the art of filming action and the importance of editing. His directorial debut came in 1973 with "The Young Dragons", a kung-fu actioner that featured two elements of what would later become the John Woo style: the dynamic fluid camera work and the elaborately choreographed action sequences (choreographed by the future Jackie Chan). On the strength of this first effort, Woo moved onto Golden Harvest where he started off with martial arts films and a filmed Chinese opera, but then became a comedy director with the success of "The Pilferer's Progress", a comedy that starred Hong Kong comedian Ricky Hui. However, by the mid-1980s, Woo was running out of steam. His latest films were duds in the box office and it looked as though he was a has-been. It was at this time that he sought funding for a pet project, "A Better Tomorrow", which caught the attention of producer/director Tsui Hark (who came to Hollywood earlier this year for "

Often copied but never bettered, at least in terms of action, and in such ever-present themes as loyalty, friendship, betrayal and honour. When watching his work one cannot help but think, "why can't Hollywood produce work of this calibre"? At least that was until his first Hollywood ventures, "Hard Target" and "Broken Arrow". At that point the aforementioned "calibre" lowered itself to that of standard Hollywood fare. Expectations were lowered. Woo's Eastern work became but a thrilling memory. Then came "Face/Off", a movie that grabbed said memory by the throat and pulled it, kicking and screaming back into the realm of contemporary action cinema. Action would be nothing but emptiness were it not for the above, and Woo knows it! He dares to involve us, and involve us he does. Emotional intensity is present in spades, with two scenes coming to mind. The first is where Archer sees his enemy's face as his own (he needs this to procure vital information for his nemesis' brother, Pollux Troy). He breaks down into a sobbing, pathetic version of himself, realising the cost of his actions may be his very life and sanity. His strength as a husband and father is all that saves him. The second is where he meets his nemesis' son, Adam. Believing Adam to be a mirror image of his murdered son Mike, he holds him and cries his son's name, frightening Adam and his mother (ably played by the superb Gina Gershon) until Archer retreats sobbing. Such emotional intensity is commonplace in Woo's best work (‘The Killer"), but the truly remarkable thing is that it not only serves as relief from the action, but propels it.
