Long overlooked and frequently misunderstood, the films of Doris Wishman have earned a growing cult of admirers who regard the diminutive New York "exploitation" filmmaker as a cinematic visionary and who applaud her status as the most prolific female auteur (29 feature films and counting!) to arise from the depths the American sound cinema. Whether you view her work as 'outsider art' or as unabashed camp, there is little denying that Doris Wishman's incomparable productivity and unmistakable style make her one of the most astonishing filmmaking phenomena of the past 40 years. Wishman's filmmaking efforts began in the nearly-forgotten nudist genre of the early-1960s. Thanks to loopholes in film censorship laws allowing for the exhibition of cinematic nudity within the context of the nudist movement, Wishman's first feature, Hideout in the Sun (1960), helped to open numerous markets to the joys of a truly even tan. Charming and hilariously innocent by today's standards, Wishman's other nudist titles include Nude on the Moon (1961), Blaze Starr Goes Nudist (1962) and Behind the Nudist Curtain (1964). Doris Wishman, the queen of exploitation films, passed away Saturday, August 10th, in a Florida hospital. She died from complications associated with lymphoma. Some say she was in her 80s. Relatives say she might have been closer to 90. Even so, Wishman was active until the end she'd just completed her 30th feature film, Each Time I Kill A true original, the self-taught director began making movies in the 1960s with camp fare like Hideout in the Sun Blaze Starr Goes Nudist and the loony classic Nude on the Moon . Not all her films were as naked as those: She soon graduated to sexy black-and-white melodramas like Bad Girls Go To Hell Another Day Another Man and Sex Perils of Paulette , and continued on with Deadly Weapons and Double Agent 73 , which starred the dangerously endowed Chesty Morgan. Wishman even filmed a mondo-like psuedo-documentary about sex changes called Let Me Die a Woman When a disgruntled lab technician destroyed much of her footage for a slasher movie called A Night to Dismember (1983), Wishman retired from filmmaking and moved to Florida. She was working at the Pink Pussycat sex boutique when I tracked her down and interviewed her for PAPER in 1998. She wasn't out of the public eye for long, though. Honors at the Chicago and New York Underground Film Festivals, lectures at Harvard and Web sites constructed in her honor connected her to a legion of fans who were stupefied and delighted by her films. Kaleem Aftab profiled the film in the May/June issue of RES, excerpted here: "At the heart of 24 Hour Party People is Tony Wilson's haphazard Factory Records label, which was incorporated by a contract written in Wilson's blood stating, 'All artists have creative freedom and own their own work.' Winterbottom was eager to recreate the spontaneity of the Manchester scene and originally intended to combine digital video with 35mm - as opposed to using the "middle ground" of 16mm that he explored in Wonderland. Eventually, though, Winterbottom decided that the best way to capture the moment was to ditch 35mm altogether and shoot as much DV footage as possible, in takes as long as 12 to 15 minutes, thereby permitting his actors the freedom to improvise.

They have to rely on no-name actors. They often deal with subject matter with, at best, niche appeal. (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” anyone?) The cards are stacked against them. But the fact is, now is a golden age for indie films. Movies like “Kissing Jessica Stein” or “Memento” have had breakout status, causing the public (and studios) to take notice. The emergence of the digital camera has slashed the cost of entry for independent filmmakers. The Internet has popped up as a successful promotional tool (Hey, it duped you into seeing “Blair Witch.”) and has the potential to be a  low cost means of mass distribution. Now is a great time to be an independent film maker.
