Laurens County History by Scott Thompson Laurens County was first inhabited by the American Indian about ten thousand years ago. The first inhabitants were organized into small groups known as bands. These bands predominately settled along the creeks and rivers in the area. Over the years the Indians were categorized as Creek Indians, while they were in fact, several different groups. Over the years, this area was occupied by the Creeks, Seminoles, Hitchitee, Yamasees, and Uchees, among others. The Lower Uchee Trail ran from Lower Alabama to the Augusta area. The trail entered the county in the southwest following Highway 26 which turns into Blackshear's Ferry Road. The trail crossed the Oconee at Carr's Bluff opposite the Country Club and ran into Highway 319 and thence on toward Augusta. One village site, the Sawyer site at Fish Trap Cut, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site contains two mounds which were constructed in the 13th Century during the Mississipian mound building period. University of Georgia anthropologists recently discovered that in between the two mounds are the remains of a Woodland Period village. This village, which was occupied about 200 B.C., is the oldest known site of its kind in Georgia. The Indians left this area in the latter part of the 17th century and the early 18th century. Spanish explorers and missionaries made several expeditions through this area. The most famous of these was Hernando de Soto, who came near the area in 1540.

At least, he's not acting like the Scott Thompson we've come to expect. Aside from a rather garish sweater bright red, with an oversized snowflake emblazoned on its front the once and future Kid In The Hall is doing absolutely nothing to draw attention to himself. There's no camp grandstanding, a la Buddy Cole, the quintessentially gay social commentator he created back in his Kids heyday. There's no inflammatory rhetoric about gays and straights and the whole damn thing the kind of rhetoric that marked his post-Kid days.

I write "semi" long form, because while there is a definite flow and cohesion to the album (and there is only one time cue) the music does morph between distinct and separate moods and feelings. However, there is also an underlying drone (per the liner notes) and I'll admit that there is also a subtle atmosphere at work throughout the recording as well. Sidereal is Thompson's musical impression of the "background noise of the universe," that miasma of cosmic static that permeates all of space. Which is not to say that Sidereal "mimics" or recreates those sounds of the cosmos. Instead, what ambient music pioneer Thompson has done is create a work that is truly sublime and exists in a constant yet subdued state of flux. However, even more of a testament is that Sidereal has moments so wonderful that you may want to "freeze frame" the CD and just bathe in the musical bliss you hear at any one moment.

Prior to studying clarinet, flute, piano and composition at the Royal College of Music (1964), she did a summer season with bandleader Ivy Benson on the Isle of Man, and in 1965 joined the New Jazz Orchestra, led by Neil Ardley, where she met her future husband, drummer Jon Hiseman. From 1966-67, she was part of She Trinity, and led a quartet with Dave Gelly. She played in the Kit-Kat Band in the musical Cabaret in 1968, and worked with the likes of Don Lusher, Mike Daniels and pop figures such as Manfred Mann, Keef Hartley and Keith Emerson.
