Home Danny Thomas and the Founding of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital It was more than 50 years ago that Danny Thomas, then a struggling young entertainer with seven dollars in his pocket, got down on his knees in a Detroit church before a statue of St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes. Danny Thomas asked the saint to "show me my way in life." His prayer was answered and soon he moved his family to Chicago to pursue career offers. A few years later, at another turning point in his life, Thomas again prayed to St. Jude and pledged to someday build a shrine to the saint. Throughout the next years, Danny Thomas' career prospered through films and television, and he became a nationally known entertainer. And he remembered his pledge to build a shrine to St. Jude. In the early 1950s Danny Thomas began discussing with friends what concrete form his vow might take. Gradually, the idea of a children's hospital, possibly in Memphis, took shape. In 1955, Danny and a group of Memphis businessmen who had agreed to help in supporting his dream seized on the idea of creating a unique research hospital devoted to curing catastrophic diseases in children. More than just a treatment facility, this would be a research center for the children of the world.

In those days, a good television gig could keep an actor near home, but Thomas' initial foray into the small screen was a variety show that was quickly cancelled. After that disappointing experience, ABC executives would only agree to another shot if Thomas starred in a sitcom. During a long brainstorming session one night, Thomas and the network brass decided that the new show’s premise should reflect Thomas’ real life, and Make Room for Daddy was born. True to Thomas’ experiences, the sitcom featured a traveling performer-father trying to work and raise a family simultaneously. The real life Thomas got to forgo the motel rooms of the road and act in a successful, long-running, Emmy-winning series, just like he always wanted. And even better than that, when he went home from the studio at night, he was looking right at his source material for future episodes. In its 1953 debut and for three years following, Thomas’ character, Danny Williams, was married with two precocious kids, Terry and Rusty. But when actress Jean Hagen (Danny’s TV missus) left the show after three seasons, the sitcom endured the first of many casting evolutions. Hagen’s character was written to have died, so in the fourth season, Danny played a widower who dated a number of guest-starring lady friends—sometimes to the comic dismay of his kids.

Born Amos Jacobs in Deerfield, Michigan, he began in show business as a traveling singer and comic. I can't see putting that explanation on EVERY page that involves this show. Yes folks, although not widely known today that classic comedy The Andy Griffith Show is in fact a spin off! This is not a case of spinning off a long running supporting character however but rather spinning off a character that appeared in one episode of The Danny Thomas Show and just clicked. The episode had Danny Thomas's entertainer character of Danny Williams being arrested and detained in the small town of Mayberry by a hick sheriff named Andy. Danny feels the charges are trumped up and he is being abused. He wants to take care of matters and get the heck out of town in a hurry. But layed back Sheriff Andy is happy to take his own sweet time and not be rushed which, of course, makes Danny angrier and angrier. By the time he leaves though, Danny has of course had a chance to experience a little bit of the slow paced, quiet life of Mayberry and grows to appreciate it (a plot later reused on The Andy Griffith Show). Of course, just as he has calmed down and is going to get out of jail, things go wrong, back into jail he goes and he gets angry all over again.

This is a cool crossover but as you can see from the odd listings of the shows that crossed over, some explanations are in order first. First off, Make Room For Daddy was the name of The Danny Thomas Show for its first three seasons. The show was about Danny Thomas's character Danny Williams. He was an entertainer and father trying to balance these duties. Normally if a show changes title, there is also some sort of basic change in the show's premise or cast or something. In this case that change seems to have been the departure of the character of Danny's wife Margaret. But aside from that it stayed pretty much the same show, unlike, say, when All In The Family became Archie Bunker's Place and the focus of the show truly shifted. Or when Valerie Harper was killed off of her own show Valerie and it became Valerie's Family and then The Hogan Family. I mean, Margaret was not the title character. Anyhow, I can't really see calling The Danny Thomas Show and Make Room For Daddy different shows so thus the double titling up above. On to Lucy! While I Love Lucy was in production, the cast began to do regular one hour specials appearing as the same characters. The specials almost always featured big name guest stars. Following the end of I Love Lucy, for five out of six of the following summers, CBS aired these specials as a series of its own called The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. So basically The Luci-Desi Comedy Hour is just repackaged repeats and is really part of I Love Lucy. But it did acquire a name of its own and airs today on places like Nick At Night under that title. And, most impotantly, the crossover occurred on one of these hour long episodes so for the sake of accuracy and all, it seems right to include it in the above listings as well.
