"If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing."
-Shirley Temple Black about her life Shirley Temple was born on April 23, 1928 in Santa Monica, California, one of three children. She began taking singing and dancing lessons when she was two years old, and when she was three and a half, she became an actress. She was the most popular motion picture star for five years straight, appearing in movies like Little Miss Money Marker, Poor Little Rich Girl, The Little Princess, Rebecca of Stoneybrook Farm, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and more. In 1934, Shirley was named "the outstanding personality of 1934" by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Then in 1935, Shirley became the youngest actor to win an Academy Award (as well as the first child to win one). However, as Shirley grew up, she became less and less popular with the public. A TV show called "Shirley Temple" appeared in the 1940's, but was so ineffective that it had to be taken off the air. In 1945, Shirley married a man named John Agar, and they had a daughter together. However, they divorced four years after the birth of their daughter. Later, she married Charles A. Black and they had two children. In 1974, Shirley served as the US Ambassador to Ghana in Africa for two years, and also was the first woman to serve as chief protocol. She also wrote her own autobiography called

    Shirley Temple Black
Although you might first think of Shirley Temple Black as the child star who danced and sang her way into America's hearts in the 1930's, her achievements and accomplishments in her adult life have reached far more people globally. As a child, Shirley starred in more than 40 major motion pictures and 50 major television productions. She received an Oscar Award in 1935. Although many child actors and actresses have difficulty moving from the entertainment industry into business or other careers, Shirley Temple Black is a remarkable exception. She has been able to blend her quick wit and style with warmth and grace to become one of our nations most respected diplomats. Diplomatic skills and the ability to create a climate among people where they can discuss issues of mutual concern are extremely important. Though her diplomatic skills kept her busy in the political arena, Mrs. Black has also lent her expertise in the business sector sitting on the Corporate Board of Directors for such major companies as Del Monte, Bancal Tri-State, Fireman's Fund Insurance, and Walt Disney Productions. Her professional activities currently include board and council memberships on the Institute for International Studies at Stanford University, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Council of American Ambassadors, and the World Affairs Council. She has also served on the boards of the United States Commission for UNESCO, the National Committee on U.S. - China Relations, the United Nations Association, the American-China Society, and the U.S. Citizens's Space Task Force. She was a founding member in 1983 and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Diplomacy and was Co-founder of the International Federation of Multiple Sclerosis societies.

    A Tribute to Shirley Temple
Shirley Temple Black, who celebrated her 72nd birthday on April 23 (the day before this article was written), is no longer a child star, but at one time she was the most popular actress in America for five years in a row. She would be the first to admit that her film career pretty much ended after 1949. In fact, of the 69 films and TV movies she appeared in, 60 of them were filmed between 1932 and 1949, more than half of those before 1937, when she turned the ripe old age of 9! She received a special Oscar in 1934 for her contribution to screen entertainment. So this tribute is primarily to the little girl who made so many people happy during the Depression, with her smile and her dancing and her precociousness rather than to the woman who was once a delegate to the United Nations, ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia, and White House Chief of Protocol, in a career that lasted 27 years, much longer than her film career. You can see a glimpse of the little girl's future in the photo above, as she sits with America's most distinguished First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, in 1938. Of course, many of the sites listed on Part II of this tribute have information about Mrs. Black's adult activities, so you'll have no problem getting whatever information you'd like.
