Stroud: Don't rush for a big tax cut February 28, 2001 All that is required for George W. Bush and Congress to do the right thing about fiscal policy is just a little patience. You wouldn't have to ask that they or the American people enlist for the long march or develop a newfound passion for fairness. Don't misunderstand me; I do think there are fairness issues about the tax code. This tax cut proposal is skewed to the more affluent segments of society. I think the estate tax does present issues of fairness, though not the ones President Bush is arguing. With already scheduled increases in exemptions, this is not primarily about farmers or small businesses any more. What the country would lose by repealing the estate tax the limit on the accumulation of inherited wealth and the incentive for the super-rich to channel some of their wealth to institutions far outweighs what we would gain. And the tax-rate reductions proposed seem to be skewed to those of us who are better off and not to those who need it most. You have to look at both the income tax structure and the weight of the Social Security tax to figure out who most needs relief. The Social Security tax increases put in place over the last 20 years have made it the most important tax many young people and low-income people pay. Those paying the highest marginal rates, meanwhile, have had one of their best decades ever.

Don Stroud Here's a few things we know about Don Stroud. He was born and raised in Hawaii and by the age of 17 was an accomplished surfer. At the age of 18 he was hired as Troy Donahue's stunt double for the TV series Hawaiian Eye . And within just a few years of these auspicious beginnings we were seeing Don's extremely well-proportioned figure not just on a surfboard but in movies with Doris Day, Mary Tyler Moore, Simone Signoret, and Diane Varsi , to name just a few of the numerous legends with whom he's shared the big screen. Here's something else we know about this fine actor whose career in movies and television spans more than three decades he's just as interesting off screen as he is on. We're qualified to report this because recently we were lucky enough to meet not only Mr. Stroud but also the lovely Mrs. Stroud as well, and we found them both to be charming people, very friendly and very appreciative of Don's fans. Considering all the bad cats Don Stroud has played over the years, frankly we were a little surprised to find him so easy-going and accessible. Actually, most of the celebrities we've ever encountered turned out to be just nice people who were nothing at all like their screen roles. It's easy to have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand you might want performers to be exactly like the characters they've portrayed on screen, since those characters are a large part of what attracted you in the first place. On the other hand, it's always such a relief to discover that these performers are just regular folks after all, not so different from the people you see every day. There is probably an important philosophical lesson about "reality" in all of this, but here at the Meeker Museum we don't dwell a whole lot on "reality." DON STROUD Don Stroud has been my favourite actor for 27 years (wow doesn't time fly?) The first film I saw him in was 'Explosion' in l972. From then on I was hooked and watched him in everything I could find. Living in England I have found very little information on Don which is a shame because he is a very fine actor and as such should receive more publicity in this country. We get to see his films and some, although not all, of his tv series in this country but I would have liked to see more articles in magazines telling us a little more about this great character actor. My favourite film has always been 'Death Weekend' (The House by the Lake) in which Don stars with Brenda Vaccaro. I saw this when it was released in the cinema in a small town called Richmond in North Yorkshire, where I was then living and it has remained my most watched film ever since.
