Almost all serial fans (me included) agree that lovely, talented, and charming Linda Stirling holds the title of Serial Queen of the Sound Era, and so, it's only appropriate to start off the Heroines section with a piece on her. In her second 1945 Republic serial, THE PURPLE MONSTER STRIKES, Linda again faced the villainy of Roy Barcroft, who this time played a Martian invader (the Purple Monster) bent on conquering the earth. The Monster takes over the body of Linda's uncle Cyrus Layton (James Craven) and uses Layton's identity for his own evil purposes. Craig Foster (Dennis Moore), a former Secret Service agent, battles the Monster and his henchman Garrett (Bud Geary) for the entire fifteen chapters, but neither he nor Linda discover till the very end that Layton and the Monster are one and the same.

I suppose the big masked drawing is meant to be Moore himself, although he never wears a mask in the serial. JESSE JAMES RIDES AGAIN Republic, 13 Chapters, 1947. Starring Clayton Moore, Linda Stirling, Roy Barcroft, John Compton, Tristram Coffin, Tom London, Holly Bane. For a later Republic, JESSE JAMES RIDES AGAIN is quite innovative and is centered on a new and unique serial premise: an ex-badman as hero. Clayton Moore was the perfect choice to play Jesse, toohis soft but stern voice and his steely eyes give the character an aura of deadliness and determination. And yet, his Jesse is quite friendly and genial with Steve and with the Boltons, and Moore makes you believe that the character has indeed reformed, while still offering hints of the type of outlaw Jesse was. He shows no hesitation in gunning down the bad guys, and the way he fans three or four shots into his opponents startles one with its suddenness. Moore gives a very convincing portrayal of a tough guy who is willing to use that toughness in the cause of Right.

Linda Stirling Real name: Louise Schultz Linda Stirling was a prolific heroine at Republic during the mid and late 1940s in both westerns and serials. She is probably best remembered for her work in cliffhangers such as THE TIGER WOMAN (1944), ZORRO'S BLACK WHIP (1944), MANHUNT OF MYSTERY ISLAND (1945), THE PURPLE MONSTER STRIKES (1945), THE CRIMSON GHOST (1946), more. Stirling was under a term players contract with Republic Pictures from April, 1944 through March, 1947. That contract provided her with security and a regular paycheck but Republic could utilize her as much as they wanted during the contract period. She married screenwriter Sloan Nibley in 1946 (he passed away in 1990). Soonafter marrying, Stirling retired to raise a family and earn a degree in English Literature from UCLA. Above, FIREBRANDS OF ARIZONA (Republic, 1944) was another of the early Carson series in which Smiley Burnette was given top billing. In this oater, Burnette has a dual role as his normal screen self, as well as bad guy Beefsteak Discoe. In this lobby card, from L-to-R are: Bob Wilke, Sunset, Rex Lease and Earle Hodgins. Sunset had originally named his white hoss 'Silver', but changed it to 'Cactus'. In OREGON TRAIL (1945), Carr's mother former silent film actress Mary Carr gets to play a character role as Peggy Stewart's feisty grandmother (who even gets involved in the final gunfight). Sunset becomes sheriff again, has another shoot-out with Kenne Duncan (after being shot in the back and hospitalized by Duncan), and uses a bullwhip to pull a would-be stage robber off his horse. This time there is no comic sidekick at all. BANDITS OF THE BADLANDS (1945) sees Sunset as a ranger who plans to take the law into his own hands when he finds the killer of his doctor-brother (played by Monte Hale). He does this by infiltrating an outlaw town with stage driver Si Jenks, and finds Peggy Stewart and her gunsmith father virtual prisoners there. Alerted by Stewart's character who has fallen for Sunset, the rangers arrive on the scene in time to keep Sunset from murdering the man he has finally hunted down. For some reason, Sunset was relegated to packing only one pearl-handled six-gun this time. And except for his next picture, he would be a one-gun hero for the rest of his Republic stint.
