TITLE: Company AUTHOR(S): Stephen Sondheim and George Furth TYPE: Musical SYNOPSIS: Set in New York, Company tells the story of five couples and their mutual friend Robert. Robert, turning 35 at the beginning of the show, seems to have everything: good looks, charm, and a great sense of humor. Nevertheless, he is still single. In Company he watches and learns from the various couples. He sees both the wonders and pitfalls of relationships. In the end though, Robert realizes that while relationships rarely turn out like they do in fairy tails, life is still better when you have someone to share it with. Dancing in the show requires light musical theater steps.

A musical with book by James Lapine, based on the painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. George, a painter, has trouble connecting with his lover, Dot, when he thinks he has to choose between her and painting because he can't balance them both. The second act reveals that his great-grandson has similar problems, but he is able to start working through them when he returns to the island (now covered in condos) and is visited by a spectral vision of Dot. Like Merrily We Roll Along Sunday employs evolving musical motifs such as Dot's first act showstopper, "We Do Not Belong Together," which eventually becomes her message to the 1984 George: "Move On," in which she and George realize, "We have always belonged together." The "development" of the country is represented by two characters, Kayama Yasaemon, a traditional samurai, and his friend Manjiro, a fisherman who had been shipwrecked in Boston, where he embraced Western ways. As Japan becomes more Westernized, Kayama embraces the new culture while Manjiro rejects it, rediscovering his roots. All this is acted out against a backdrop of the greater changes in Japan, as the Japanese and the world powers all try to capitalize on the opening up of Japan. http://www.theatrehistory.com/american/candide_001.html
CANDIDE Purchase The Movie The Cast Album Sheet Music Book by LILLIAN HELLMAN Lyrics by RICHARD WILBUR Music by LEONARD BERNSTEIN A revised one-act version includes a new libretto by HUGH WHEELER and additional lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM CANDIDE was first produced at the Martin Beck Theatre, New York, on December 1, 1956, with Robert Rounseville as "Candide," Max Adrian as "Pangloss," Barbara Cook as "Cunegonde," Louis Edmonds as "Maximilian," and Irra Petina as "Old Lady." A revised one-act version by Hugh Wheeler and Stephen Sondheim opened at the Chelsea Theatre Centre, Brooklyn, on December 19, 1973. V Making their escape, Candide and Cunegonde, along with the Old Lady, board a vessel heading for the New World, but, as luck would have it, the vessel is attacked by pirates, and Cunegonde, along with the Old Lady, is carried off for another round of ravishment. When he arrives in the New World, Candide is surprised to find both Paquette and Maximilian alive and sold into slavery. Candide brings them up-to-date on what has happened and swears that he will rescue Cunegonde once more and marry her. Maximilian, however, is still a Thunder-Ten-Tronck, and furious at the suggestion that his sister should marry a bastard, begins chasing Candide madly. Candide hides behind a statue and, as luck would have it, accidentally knocks the statue over, crushing Maximilian to death instantly.

33. Gypsy
A synopsis of the musical by Arthur Laurents, stephen sondheim and Jule Styne.
http://www.theatrehistory.com/american/musical015.html
GYPSY Purchase The Cast Album Sheet Music The Movie (DVD) The Movie (VHS) Book by ARTHUR LAURENTS Lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM Music by JULE STYNE Based on the autobiography of GYPSY ROSE LEE First produced at the Broadway Theatre on May 21, 1959, with Ethel Merman as "Rose", Jack Klugman as "Herbie" and Sandra Church as "Louise". G YPSY was the musical comedy adaptation of Gypsy: A Memoir , the autobiography of Gypsy Rose Lee, who has become famous in burlesque as a striptease artist. With her sister, June (the distinguished motion-picture star, June Havoc), she had had a rich career in the theatre, always driven on to ever-greater successes by an over-ambitious and persevering mother. The play opens in a little vaudeville house where several child acts are being rehearsed for a contest. The team of Baby Louise and Baby June are one of the attractions; their mother, Rose, seated in the back of the house, continually thunders out bits of advice to her children. When the three return home Rose prevails on her husband to provide funds with which to build a vaudeville act around June. That act "Baby June and her Newsboys" tours the vaudeville circuit for a number of years. When the act arrives in New York they contact T.T. Grantziger, a producer. In their hotel room Herbie tries to convince Rose to marry him, give up show business and relax the control she has over her daughters. But Rose has a single mind and a single purpose, and will permit nothing to deflect her. She promises Herbie she will marry him, but only when June's name finally goes up in lights on Broadway.

Brief history of the musical by stephen sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm58.html
Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Book: Hugh Wheeler Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a macabre tragicomedy based on the legend of a half-mad 19th century English barber. He is driven to crime when his wife and child are taken from him by an evil judge. Unjustly imprisoned, Todd eventually escapes and vows to bring justice not only to the judge who destroyed his life, but to all the people of London. To this end, he forms a partnership with Mrs. Lovett, an enterprising barmistress whose meat pies soon become the tastiest in London! This tale of vengeance and murder features a top-notch score by Stephen Sondheim, one of the musical theatre's most brilliant composers. The "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" which opens both acts is based in the "Dies Irae," the Roman Catholic mass for the dead. Hugh Wheeler's libretto is based on a play by Christopher Bond. Sweeney Todd opened at the Uris Theatre on March 1, 1979. Although the show only ran for 557 performances, it went on to win 8 Tony Awards including "Best Musical." The original cast featured Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett and Len Cariou as Sweeney Todd.

Sondheim, Stephen (b. 1930)
page: Stephen Sondheim's seventieth birthday on March 22, 2000 was marked by a gala fete at the Library of Congress and proved the occasion for numerous retrospectives of his remarkable career. The only child of a mother who designed clothing for his father's company, Sondheim grew up in an environment of wealth, talent, and refined sensibility. His parents divorced when he was ten years old. When his mother moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Stephen became a friend of a neighbor boy, Jimmy Hammerstein, son of presiding Broadway genius Oscar Hammerstein II, who encouraged Sondheim in his earliest efforts. Stephen studied music at Williams College. After graduating he wrote scripts, with avant garde composer Milton Babbitt, for the television series "Topper." One of the most innovative careers in Broadway history was launched when, at age 26, he was asked to write the lyrics for Leonard Bernstein's
