Red Skelton dies at 84 - September 17, 1997 Good night, and may God bless. Red - one of my childhood memories. What a great clown/comedian/philosopher! And, I believe we're actually related too! I think we're second cousins twice-removed. Red's Grandfather and my Great, Great Grandfather were brothers. What I understand is that my Great, Great Grandfather's name was Marion, I believe, and they were raised in Vincennes, Indiana. Below are a few links related to Red that I found searching the Net.

Comedian Richard "Red" Skelton brought fame to Vincennes by frequently mentioning it to audiences during his award-winning television shows and in live performances. Skelton was born July 18, 1913, in Vincennes, and died Sept. 17, 1997, in Palm Springs, Calif. In his early years, it was hard to tell just what his name was, as he used "Skelton" and "Ehart" at different times. Both last names appear in Red Skelton's family, and local historian Robert R. "Gus" Stevens has researched the situation, believes he knows why, and says that Skelton is correct. Quite simply, Red's grandfather was named Skelton, but his stepgrandfather was named Ehart, Stevens said. Red's father, Joseph Elmer Skelton, was the son of Joseph Elmer and Ella (Richardville) Skelton. His mother was descended from the Richardvilles who were among the earliest French settlers of Vincennes.

When I was in the fourth grade, Red Skelton had his own show on TV, and I worshipped him. I loved his jokes, his sense of humor and his incredible timing. And when the fourth grade variety show came around, I volunteered to do magic and jokes. At the time of the performance, I was not thrilled with the way the act was going. When the curtains began to close, I stepped forward through them and back into the spotlight, and said, "Before the curtains close on me, I would like to tell another joke." "Uh-oh," said my teacher who was sitting in the front row alongside my parents. I then proceeded to tell a joke I had heard Red Skelton recite on television the night before. I did not fully understand it. It dealt with three men who had died and gone to heaven and were explaining to St. Peter why they should be allowed to enter the pearly gates. I don't remember how the joke goes, but it turns out the joke was about a bigamist. Well, by the time I finished the joke, the audience of teachers and parents was weeping and wetting themselves. The kids laughed because their parents laughed, and the parents, mine included, were absolutely dying from the shock. It was a truly funny moment for PS 162.

Commentary on the Pledge of Allegiance
by Red Skelton
As a schoolboy, one of Red Skelton's teachers explained the words and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance to his class. Skelton later wrote down, and eventually recorded, his recollection of this lecture. It is followed by an observation of his own. I - - Me; an individual; a committee of one. Pledge - - Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity. Allegiance - - My love and my devotion. To the Flag - - Our standard; Old Glory ; a symbol of Freedom; wherever she waves there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts, Freedom is everybody's job. United - - That means that we have all come together. States - - Individual communities that have united into forty-eight great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose. All divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that is love for country. And to the Republic - - Republica state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people; and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people. For which it stands One Nation - - One Nationmeaning, so blessed by God.

Good Night, and God Bless
Richard "Red" Skelton (July 18, 1913 - September 17, 1997)
"If some day you're not feeling well, you should remember some little thing I have said or done and if it brings a smile to your face or a chuckle to your heart then my purpose as a clown has been fulfilled." Red Skelton, America's greatest clown (in my humble opinion) has passed away. The great comedian has, thankfully, left a large body of work behind in the form of TV shows (now available on video - both VHS and DVD movies , songs, records (his recording of the Pledge of Allegiance actually topped the charts), books, paintings, etc. At the bottom of this page you will find many Red Skelton resources if you know of any more, please sign the guestbook or
Biography
Inducted into the Clown Hall of Fame in 1989 Richard "Red" Skelton was born in Vincennes, Indiana. His father, who died two months before his birth was a clown with the Hagenbeck & Wallace Circus. Before "Red" was sixteen, he had also clowned in this same show, and acted, sang, or did stand up comedy in medicine shows, minstrel shows, and on board a river showboat. Years later, he wrote "

SKELTON, RED U.S. Comedian It was not until 1986, a full fifteen years after his weekly television show had ended, that "one of America's clowns" received his overdue critical praise. Only then did the critics realize what the public had long known. Regardless of his passion for corny gags and slapstick comedy, Red Skelton was a gifted comedian. He is one of the few performers to succeed in four entertainment genresvaudeville, radio, film, and television. To honor his lifetime achievements, Red received the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Governor's Emmy Award in 1986 and, with it, the critical praise he deserved. Born 18 July 1913 as Richard Red Skelton, his youth was characterized by poverty and a fascination for vaudeville. It was the influence of vaudeville great Ed Wynn that led Skelton to perfect his own comedy routines. The basics of Red's vaudeville act consisted of pantomimes, pratfalls, funny voices, crossed eyes, and numerous sight gags that would serve to identify Skelton throughout his entertainment career. It was also during this period that Red began developing various comedy characters. His radio show, which ran from 1941 to 1953, provided the opportunity to present his comedy to a mass audience. The limitations of the sound medium also made it necessary for him to further develop the characters he would later bring to televisionFreddie the Freeloader; Clem Kadiddlehopper, the country bumpkin; Willy Lump Lump, the drunk; Cauliflower McPugg, the boxer; The Mean Widdle Kid; San Fernando Red, the con man.

THE RED SKELTON SHOW U.S. Comedy/Variety The Red Skelton Show , which premiered on 30 September 1951, was not only one of the longest running variety series on television, but also one of the first variety shows to make the successful transition from radio to television. Despite his popularity as an entertainer in nightclubs, vaudeville, radio and 26 feature films, Skelton was unsure of the new medium. Consequently, he continued his weekly radio broadcasts while simultaneously working on the first two season of his television show. The series originally aired in a half-hour format on NBC. Despite an outstanding first year in which his show was ranked fourth in the Nielsens and won two Emmy awards, the series' ratings toppled in its second season. When NBC canceled the show, it was immediately picked up by CBS, and The Red Skelton Show became a Tuesday night staple from 1954 to 1970.
