His father was a mining engineer and his mother a federal deputy surveyor of mineral lands. They returned to California when William was a toddler. His interest in science was encouraged from early on, through his parents' professions and by a neighbor who taught physics at Stanford. He graduated from Cal Tech in 1932 and then received his PhD from MIT in 1936. He began work immediately at Bell Labs. His research in solid state physics, especially vacuum tubes, made many theoretical advances in the company's goal to use electronic switches for telephone exchanges instead of the mechanical switches used up until then. During World War II, Shockley worked on military projects, particularly refining radar systems. As soon as the war ended, he was back doing solid-state research, now investigating semiconductors. One of his major contributions to the electronics industry was to apply quantum theory to the development of semiconductors. Shockley was not present at that first observation. During World War II, on leave of absence from Bell, he served as director of research for the Navy's Anti-Submarine Warfare Operations Research Group and as expert consultant for the Office of the Secretary of War. Returning to Bell after the war, he became director of the solid state physics research program, which saw the development of the first experiments on early junction transistors. In 1954, Shockley was named director of transistor physics research at Bell.

Shockley, William Bradford (1910-1989), físico estadounidense, premiado con el Nobel y coinventor del transistor. Nació en Londres de padres estadounidenses. Trabajó en los laboratorios de la Compañía Telefónica Bell desde 1936 hasta 1956, año en que fue nombrado director de la Shockley Transistor Corporation en Palo Alto, California. Dio conferencias en la Universidad Stanford desde 1958 y fue profesor de ingeniería en 1963. Sus investigaciones sobre los semiconductores le llevaron al desarrollo del transistor en 1948. Por esta investigación compartió en 1956 el Premio Nobel de Física con sus asociados John Bardeen y Walter H. Brattain. Con posterioridad publicó varios polémicos ensayos en los que argumentó que la inteligencia es ante todo hereditaria.
