Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr.
Meet the man...
American Astronaut Born in East Derry, New Hampshire Nov. 18, 1923 He developed an interest in airplanes at a young age, enjoying building model airplanes and hanging around the local airport He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1944. He served on a destroyer during World War II after which he took flight training and became a Navy test pilot logging over 8000 hours of flight time. In 1959, he was named one of the first seven Mercury astronauts. On May 5, 1961, he became the first American launched into space. Shepard rode in the tiny Freedom 7 capsule on the historic sub-orbital flight to an altitude of 115 miles and 303 miles down range reaching a top speed of 5,180 miles per hour. 15 minutes later he landed in the Atlantic Ocean. Upon his return to the earth, he touched down only 160 feet (half of a football field) from the target point in the ocean. Shepard served (1963-69, 1971-74) as chief of the astronaut office for N.A.S.A. (National Aeronautics Space Administration) at the Johnson Space Center. In 1974, he retired from the Navy as a Rear Admiral and from NASA.

Astronaut
Alan B. Shepard, Jr Freedom 7

Rocket:
Redstone, MR-7 Spacecraft: No. 7 Launch: 05/05/1961, 9:34:00 a.m. EST Landing: 05/05/1961, 9:49:28 a.m. EST Duration: 15 min, 28 sec Altitude: 116.5 statute miles Orbits: Distance: 303 statute miles Velocity: 5,134 mph Max G: Recovery ship: Lake Champlain The main scientific objective of project Mercury was to determine man's capabilities in a space environment and in those environments to which he will be subject upon going into and returning from space. A few of the basic flight problems included: The development of an automatic escape system, vehicle control during insertion, behavior of space systems, evaluation of pilots capabilities in space, in flight monitoring, retrofire and reentry maneuvers and landing and recovery. The name "Freedom Seven" was Alan Shepard's choice. "Freedom" because it was patriotic and "Seven" because it was the seventh Mercury capsule produced. It also represented the seven Mercury astronauts. To help relieve any tension Shepard might have built up before his flight, Glenn pasted a little sign on the spacecraft instrument panel, reading "No handball playing here." This bit of levity hearkened back to their training days. At T-15 minutes it was necessary to hold the count again to make a final check of the real-time trajectory computer. A small electrical part had a problem and this resulted in an hour and twenty six minute delay. Shepard was on top of the Redstone for so long now that he had to urinate. "Gordo!" he said, talking to Gordon Cooper, a fellow Mercury Seven astronaut and principal prelaunch communicator. "Go, Alan." "Man, I got to pee." "You what?" "You heard me. I've got to pee. I've been up here forever."

Project Mercury NASA Explanation: On another Friday (May 5, 1961), at the dawn of the space age , NASA controllers "lit the candle" and sent Alan B. Shepard Jr. arcing into space atop a Redstone rocket . The picture shows the pressure-suited Shepard before the launch in his cramped space capsule dubbed "Freedom 7" . This historic flight - the first spaceflight by an American - made Shepard a national hero . Born in East Derry, New Hampshire on November 18, 1923, Shepard graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1944 and went on to train and serve as a Naval Aviator. Chosen as one of the original seven Mercury Program astronauts, he considered this first flight the greatest challenge and actively sought the assignment. Shepard's accomplishments in his career as an astronaut spanned a remarkable period in human achievement and in 1972 he walked on the moon as commander of the Apollo 14 mission. A true pioneer and intrepid explorer

The adage, To the stars through difficulties, was never more true than it was for Alan Shepard. After gaining fame and glory as America's first man in space in 1961, Shepard was grounded by an inner ear disorder in 1963. The ailment kept him on the sidelines while his fellow astronauts made history in the Gemini and Apollo programs. Even though Shepard attained power and wealth besides serving as the chief astronaut, Shepard amassed a small fortune from a variety of business ventures he wanted nothing more than to prove himself by making another space mission. Not until 1969, after undergoing risky surgery to correct his ear problem, did Shepard win clearance from NASA doctors to fly in space again. Decades before his Mercury colleague John Glenn became the oldest person to fly in space at age 77, Alan Shepard, now in his mid 40s, was considered the grand old man of spaceflight. More Stories

House Passes Bill to Award Apollo Astronauts Moon Rocks But at NASA Headquarters, some managers felt Shepard had been out of the training game too long and needed some time to catch up. So when Shepard's name was submitted as commander of Apollo 13, it was rejected and Shepard was assigned to the next mission instead. That turned out to be a narrow escape. Jim Lovell and his crew almost lost their lives when an explosion crippled Apollo 13 on the way to the Moon, and Shepard along with hundreds of others in Houston worked to bring them home. When it came time for Apollo14 to fly in early 1971, Shepard and his crew mates, rookies Stu Roosa and Ed Mitchell, were acutely aware that they could not afford to fail; for NASA to recover from Apollo 13's brush with disaster, Apollo 14 would have to be successful.

May 5, 1961. In the predawn darkness, a 59-foot- (18-meter-) tall Redstone missile stood in the glare of floodlights. Vapor spewed from the rocket's side as its tanks were pressurized with fuel and supercold liquid oxygen. Not far away, in a trailer that served as a suiting-up room, Alan Shepard prepared to ride that rocket. When he emerged, clad in a silvery spacesuit and carrying a portable ventilator, he paused to look up at the gleaming rocket. Minutes later, he was squeezing into the tiny cabin of his Mercury spacecraft, which he had christened Freedom 7. Lying on his back in a formfitting couch, Shepard watched as technicians sealed the spacecraft's side hatch. "Okay, buster," he told himself, "you volunteered for this thing."

The space vehicle with a crew of Alan B. Shepard, Jr., the commander; StuartA. Roosa, the command module pilot; and Edgar D. Mitchell, the lunar modulepilot, was launched from Kennedy Space Center, Fla., at 4:03:22 EST on January 31, 1971. The touchdown occurred at 08:37:10 GMT, February 5, within 50m (160 ft) ofthe target point in the Fra Mauro highlands. The first extravehicularactivity (EVA) began 5 hr 23 min after touchdown. A color television camera mounted on the descent stage provided live coverageof the descent of both astronauts to the lunar surface. The crew deployed theU.S. flag and the solar-wind composition experiment, erected the S-bandantenna, and off-loaded the modularized equipment transporter (MET), laserranging retroreflector (LRRR), and the Apollo lunar-surface experimentspackage (ALSEP). The second EVA was a planned extended geological traverse of Cone Crater. Allequipment required for the geological traverse, including the lunar portablemagnetometer (LPM), was loaded on the MET. The traverse up the side of ConeCrater provided experience in climbing and working in hilly terrain in 1/6earth gravity conditions. This EVA lasted 4 hr and 20 min, during which timethe astronauts traveled approximately 3 km. Liftoff occurred at 18:48 GMT, February 6, after 33 hr on the lunar surface. After crew transfer, the LM ascent stage was separated and remotely guided toimpact on the lunar surface. Impact occurred between Apollo 12 and 14seismometers. The resulting seismic signal lasted for 1.5 hr and was recordedby both instruments.

    July 22, 1998
The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer Transcript Space explorer Alan Shepard, the first American in space, died of leukemia at the age of 74. NewsHour essayist Roger Rosenblatt shares a passage of Tom Wolfe's novel The Right Stuff , written about Shepard, in his memory. JIM LEHRER: Finally tonight remembering astronaut Alan Shepard. Kwame Holman begins. KWAME HOLMAN: In 1959, Alan Shepard and six other men were chosen from a pool of 110 pilots who volunteered to go into space. NASA picked Shepard to guide its very first manned space flight. On May 5, 1961, Shepard became the first American in space. He flew for 15 minutes aboard the Mercury Freedom 7 Spacecraft and splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. In an interview years later the former Navy test pilot explained his desire to be an astronaut. ALAN SHEPARD: I think all those who volunteered and certainly all of those who ended up the finals like I did really sort of looked at it as an extension of what they're doing. See, as a test pilot you sort of keep flying bigger and better and faster and farther and higher, et cetera, et cetera. In other words, you're expanding, as we call it, the boundary of the envelope, the envelope being the curve describing where thou shalt not pass if you're flying an airplane. And I think all of the original seven looked at it that way. It's not a brand new frontier really. It's just taking what we have and pushing it out. And I think all of us looked at it as a natural extension of what we'd been doing-flying strange-looking airplanes, and that sort of thing.

Fun and friendship with Shepard 'will not be forgotten'
    By John Moore
A FLORIDA TODAY guest column COCOA BEACH, Fla. - I had the privilege and fun of flying with Al Shepard more than 40 years ago when we were both test pilots at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Md. We were both in the Flight Test Division charged with flying new Navy airplanes off aircraft carriers to determine if the machines were suitable for fleet operations. Carrier Suitability, it was called. Naturally.
