Did I follow this man into Space? You bet your booties!
Jump to Links I was in the 5th grade when the USSR sent Sputnik into space. That morning stands out very clearly in my memory; it was a true epiphany. From that moment on my head was in the stars. I was a space baby... Hard to believe that it wasn't until 1961 (my junior year in high school...) that anyone succeeded in sending a man into space. It seems so hoo-hum now, now that we take it for granted that we have a role in the Universe...between Star Trek and Babylon 5 I spend at least 20 hours a week in the Alpha, Gamma or Delta Quadrants, slipping in and out of hyper-space via wormholes and jumpgates. The point is...Sputnik, Yuri, Alan Shepard and the Mercury 7... excited our imaginations, our ambitions, and our creativity. Everyone now talks about the space race with the USSR, but I wasn't so aware of that at the time. From the beginning I felt our venture into space as a Human endeavor. I was as excited about Yuri as I had been about Sputnik. But Alan Shepard brought the space program Home, made it real and personal, made it ours. The Mercury 7 were our heroes and those seven men are burned into my consciousness in a way the rest can never be, although I admire them all. I followed the training program. Someone, maybe Reader's Digest? put out a series of books for kids on the Mercury Program...a series of small magazines that fit into a velvetized slip cover. They came with stamps and seals that we could put into place and they went into all aspects of the program in great detail.

Shepard and Mitchell landed on the moon in the lunar module (landing near the Frau Mauro Crater) on February 5, 1971, while Roosa orbited the moon in the command module. Shepard hit golf balls on the moon during this historic trip.
