69. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw
Biographical information with illustrations and photo stills from the movie Glory .
http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Jetty/1036/robertshaw.html
Robert Gould Shaw was born on October 10, 1837 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the only son of Francis Gould and Sarah Sturgis Shaw, both strong abolistionists. Although the Shaws were socially conscious, they were also deeply devoted to the pursuit of intellect and spirit. Friends in their circle included thinkers, writers, and reformers, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Lloyd Garrison, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. In 1856, Robert enrolled into Harvard University, but withdrew in March of 1859 without receiving his degree. From there, he entered into his uncle's business in New York and became a businessman. Shaw joined the Seventh New York Regiment after Lincoln's election and the succession of several states. He became a lieutenant and marched with the regiment to defend Washington in April of 1861. Although the unit only served for 30 days, it was in this unit that he found the vocation that commanded his enthusiasm and respect. In May, 1861, he left the Seventh New York Regiment and joined the Second Massachusetts Infantry as First Lieutenant. During his less than two years of service in the Second Infantry, he rose to the rank of captain. He was wounded at Antietam in the neck and saw some of his closest friends fall in combat. His resolve to fight, however, only grew stronger with each battle. Massachusetts Governor John A. Andrew offered command of the new Massachusetts Fifty-Fourth Regiment to Shaw in February of 1863 through his father, Francis Shaw, who personally delivered the governor's message to the young Shaw. He was currently at Stafford Court House in Virginia when asked to command the 54th. Robert was not certain he was "equal to the responsibility of such a position," and without a doubt, was reluctant to leave the regiment he was so devoted to, therefore he declined the offer. His strong sense of duty, however, prevailed. After he accepted the colonelcy, his mother wrote: "Now I feel ready to die, for I see you willing to give y[ou]r support to the cause of truth that is lying crushed and bleeding."

Daily Bulletin ONTARIO Robert Shaw, the dominant figure in American choral music who died Monday, was remembered by Chaffey High School classmates as being someone who showed musical brilliance at an early age. Mr. Shaw, 82, graduated from Chaffey High in 1933. He was best known as conductor of the Robert Shaw Chorale, which performed around the world. He also was conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony and the Opera Company of Boston. He held annual choral institutes in France and at Carnegie Hall. Mr. Shaw died in New Haven, Conn., of a stroke. He was visiting Yale to see a production of Samuel Beckett's ''Endgame,'' which his son Thomas directed and acted in. As early as 1943 Shaw was named "America's greatest chorale conductor" by the National Association of Composers and Conductors. Marjorie (Ferguson) Stamm, who graduated with Mr. Shaw and attended the Ontario church where his father was a minister, said singing was in his blood.

Robert Shaw
(conductor, born April 30, 1916, Red Bluff, California; died January 25, 1999) Four decades ago, the greatand not easily pleasedItalian conductor Arturo Toscanini was conducting Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with his NBC Symphony Orchestra. After hearing the chorus, which had been prepared by Robert Shaw, perform the glorious choral movement that ends the symphony, Toscanini turned to his players and said, "In Robert Shaw I have at last found the maestro I have been looking for." And in Robert Shaw the art of choral conducting in this country had found its genius. For more than half a century he set the standard of excellence for choral music, enjoying a status of patriarch of vocal musical interpretation. His first major honor came as early as 1943 from the National Association of Composers and Conductors which cited him as "America's greatest choral conductor." Robert Shaw came from a clerical family. His father and grandfather were ministers. More importantly, perhaps, his mother sang in church choirs. In school, his serious interests were in philosophy, literature, and religion, but at Pomona College he did join the glee club. Then, in a chain of events right out of a Warner Brothers backstage musical, Shaw was asked to take over the choir for an ailing faculty leader the same year that Fred Waring happened to be making a film on the campus. Waring was impressed, asked him to go to New York to develop a glee club for him, and a star conductor was born.

To Work With a Master
Master and apprentice. One has a lifetime of knowledge, skill, and the hard-earned perfection of his art. The other has a boundless desire to learn as much as possible of the master's wisdom. Robert Shaw and Kristofer Johnson. Shaw is one of the nation's most renowned choral conductors. Johnson, from Meridian, Mississippi, is a junior voice major in the Conservatory who aspires to a career in choral conducting. Master and apprentice worked together when Robert Shaw, now music director emeritus and conductor laureate of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, was on campus in early November to lead "A Tribute to Robert Fountain," a four-day event that culminated in a concert of works by Stravinsky, Mozart, Haydn, and Wagner. It was an experience that Johnson won't soon forget. "Rehearsals were insane," said Johnson, the tenor section leader of the Oberlin College Choir. "They were intense, exciting, and wonderful. I can't say enough about what a brilliant musician he is." Johnson studies vocal performance with Gerald Crawford and conducting with Edward Maclary. Shaw directed members of the Oberlin College Choir, the Musical Union, and the Oberlin Orchestra, as well as a chorus of 150 alumni who returned to campus to honor the memory of Robert Fountain. Proceeds from the ticket revenue benefited the Robert Fountain Memorial Merit Scholarship in Choral Music.

Robert Shaw dead at 82
By Wendell Brock, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Robert Shaw, the man who taught America to sing and the single most important figure in Atlanta's cultural history, died at 2:05 a.m. today at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. He was 82.
Nola Frink, Shaw's assistant of many years, said Shaw was at Yale on Saturday night to see his youngest son direct a student production of Samuel Beckett's "Endgame."
"During the play, Mr. Shaw had a massive stroke," said Frink. His son, Thomas; his daughter, Johanna; and his stepson, Alex Hitz, were all at his bedside.
As leader of the Robert Shaw Chorale, he established the world's first professional chorus and set new standards for disciplined, powerful choral singing.
