Product Reviews: A Great Portrait of a Man A truly well crafted documentary where excerpts from Malcolm X's autobiography and footage of his speeches drive the narrative. This is about as close to capturing the spirit of Malcolm X as well as the cultural climate in which he operated as you can get. There is no obtrusive narrator or newsperson offering up their slanted view of Malcolm X here. Archival footage is used to flesh out the scenes Malcolm X desribes in his autobiography, from his childhood to Boston, Harlem, Birmingham, and Mecca. There are also numerous vintage interviews with with Betty Shabazz, Elijah Muhammad,Philbert X, Ella Collins Little, James Farmer and many others. From the opening of the film with Billy Holiday's STRANGE FRUIT to Ossie Davis' eulogy, this is truly the film to watch if you want to see Malcolm X's incredible journey to becoming El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and the impact he made upon America and the world.

"Malcolm X"
19 May 1925 - 21 February 1965 Malik El-Shabazz, or Malcolm X as he most commonly known, was born as Malcolm Little on 19 May 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. His father, the Reverend Earl Little, was a Baptist minister, a dedicated organizer for Marcus Aurelius Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association and a dedicated Civil Rights Activist who believed not so much in the cause of integration as he did in the return of the black race to its African roots. Earl Little was brutally murdered in 1931 and his death is still believed to have been caused by white racists. His mother, Louise Little, born in Grenada in the British West Indies, was a half white woman with a West Indies accent who was described by Malcolm as having been deeply ashamed of the fact that she had a white father. After Malcolm's birth, the family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where, in 1929, his "earliest vivid memory" was a night attack by the Black Legion, an offshoot of the Ku Klux Klan that wore black robes instead of white. The attackers burned out the Little home and the family was left with only the clothes on their back. Following the death of his father, Malcolm's family was gradually broken up as his mother became increasingly unable to provide for her children and resultantly lapsed into mental instability. While in school, he began to have dreams of becoming a lawyer, dreams that were crushed by a white teacher who convinced Malcolm that, as a negro, he should not be aspiring to a career higher than his station.

The Pilgrimage to Mecca
by Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X)
When he was in Mecca, Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz wrote this letter to his brothers in Harlem...

Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors. I have been blessed to visit the Holy City of Mecca, I have made my seven circuits around the Ka'ba, led by a young Mutawaf named Muhammad, I drank water from the well of the Zam Zam. I ran seven times back and forth between the hills of Mt. Al-Safa and Al Marwah. I have prayed in the ancient city of Mina, and I have prayed on Mt. Arafat. There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white. America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have been considered white - but the white attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. I have never before seen sincere and true brotherhood practiced by all colors together, irrespective of their color.

Forums DawaCards Hajj as a shift against racism: Many Muslims who have been blessed to make Hajj often speak of how the journey is a life-changing experience. This is more the case for some than others. Malcolm X is one Muslim who saw the light of true Islam through his Hajj in April 1964. As a former member and speaker for the Nation of Islam, a black spiritual and nationalist movement, he believed that the white man was the devil and the black man superior. After leaving the Nation of Islam in March 1964, he made Hajj, which helped change his perspective on whites and racism completely. Here is an excerpt of a letter El Hajj Malik El Shabazz wrote about his Hajj experience. In it, he explains what it was during this blessed journey that made him so profoundly shift his perspective on race and racism: "There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and the non-white. You may be shocked by these words coming from me. But on this pilgrimage, what I have seen, and experienced, has forced me to rearrange much of my thought patterns previously held, and to toss aside some of my previous conclusions. This was not too difficult for me. Despite my firm convictions, I have been always a man who tries to face facts, and to accept the reality of life as new experience and new knowledge unfolds it. I have always kept an open mind, which is necessary to the flexibility that must go hand in hand with every form of intelligent search for truth.

IV. Malcolm X (19.5.1925 - 21.2.1965)
3. El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz
I feel like a man who has been asleep somewhat and under someone else's control. I feel that what I'm thinking and saying is now for myself. Before it was for and by the guidance of Elijah Muhammad. Now I think with my own mind, sir!
Malcolm X, in New York Times, Feb. 22,1965 What made him unfamiliar and dangerous was not his hatred for white people but his love for blacks, his apprehension of the horror of the black condition, and the reasons for it, and his determination so to work on their hearts and minds that they would be enabled to see their condition and change it themselves.
James Baldwin in "No Name in the Street",p.97 When it occurred to him that his suspension wasn't temporary and that certain members of the Nation did their best to keep him from becoming active again, Malcolm gave a press conference and announced his break with the NOI. He founded an own religious organization, the Muslim Mosque, Inc.. In April 1964, soon after he left the Nation, he made his holy pilgrimage to Mecca and took on the Islamic name of "El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz". On his "Hajj", like it is called in the religion of Islam, he experienced real brotherhood, being accepted and treated as a human being. The friendliness and respect he received made a great impression on him:
"The colour-blindness of the Muslim world's religious society and the colour-blindness of the Muslim world's human society: these two influences had each day been making a greater impact, and an increasing persuasion against my previous way of thinking."

28. El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz
But after his excommunication from the NOI, he made the hajj to Meccaand was given the new name elhajj malik el-shabazz . He

Little, Malcom (1925-65)
Feb. 18, 1965 Photo by Robert L. Haggins African-American nationalist leader, born in Omaha, NE. Imprisoned for burglary in 1946, he was converted to the Black Muclim sect led by Elijah Muhammad. On his release in 1953, he assumed his new name [Malcom X], and won a large following on speaking tours on behalf of the sect, pressing for black separatism and the use of violence in self-defence. In 1964, following a trip to Mecca, his views changed, and he founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity. A factional feud ensued, culminating in his assassination by Black Muslim enemies during a rally in Harlem. SIGH.
You'd think that the man Time magazine dubbed "the angriest black man in America," the major catalyst for the black power movement in the United States, and arguably the most important (powerful, influential) black person in the twentieth century would get a less marginal treatment than that. One basic fact should not be omitted, however, and that's that he went through four incarnations, each with a different name. He was born Malcom Little, but took on the name "Detroit Red" in his street hustling years. Within the Nation Of Islam, he went by the name of Malcom X, by which he is most widely known in America to this day. But after his excommunication from the NOI, he made the Hajj to Mecca and was given the new name "El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz". He is survived by his wife Betty Shabazz, still an activist to this day.

How I came to Islam
Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz: Malcolm X Twenty-five years after his death, Malcolm X, Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, still towers above the statue of liberty. He refuses to
die. Wherever injustice and oppression takes place, his smiling face and uncompromising message fill the atmosphere. Yes, they killed the body but not the spirit. When he was alive, Brother Shabazz was the most feared man in America. And, the
most loved. The situation hasn't changed. For the deprived and the oppressed African-Americans, Brother Shabazz continues to be the hero, the inspiration that makes it
possible for them to maintain their sanity and dignity in a vile society which can't stop despising them. We, as Muslims, are often angered to see Br. Shabazz identified as a Black Nationalist rather than a Muslim. While the anger is
justified, we must understand that people generally emphasize the aspect of a leader's life which is in harmony with their own
aspirations. While some African-Americans will continue to invoke the nationalist side of Br. Shabazz, it is for us to see that his
Islamic personality is projected to the world!

Quotation from The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley
The first letter was to, of course, my wife Betty. I knew that she would see what I had seen- that in the land of Muhammad and the land of Abraham, I had been blessed by Allah with a new insight into the true religion of Islam, and a better understanding of Americas entire racial dilemma.
I knew that when my letter became public knowledge back in America, many would be astounded-loved ones, friends, and enemies alike. Even I was myself astounded. But there was precedent in my life for this letter. Here is what I wrote...from my heart:
"Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and the overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this Ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad, and all the other prophets of the Holy Scriptures. Sayyid Abul Ala Mawdudi The crisis the ummah faced in the 20th century was encountered in a profound manner by the great exegete Sayyid Abul A’la Mawdudi (1903-1979). He pioneered a movement ijtihad at the level of thought and institution building and offered an ideological alternative to the modern world. Aware of the impact of ideological challenges of the Capitalist, Marxist and Fascists ideologies of the 19th century Europe, Sayyid Mawdudi encountered the challenge at three different levels.
