DVD review Review date: October 1, 1999 [Full view - 56 kb In 1979 a young director - Don Coscarelli - wrote and directed his sci-Fi/horror masterpiece, Phantasm . Working on a small budget and huge aspirations, he fashioned one of the greatest horror films of all time, turning it's villan - The Tall Man - into a horror icon and it's unlikely hero - Reggie - into a cult hero. The film was very successful and would eventually spawn three surprisingly good sequels. However, as is usually the case none of them live up to the original film. Now MGM has released an excellent Collector's Edition DVD with supplements every fan will rejoice about. The Story [Full view - 33 kb The film takes place in a quiet seemingly innocent town. Jody ( Bill Thornbury ) and Reggie ( Reggie Bannister ) are attending a funeral at morningside for their best friend Tommy who apparently killed himself. Jody's little brother Mike ( Michael Baldwin ), who wasn't supposed to attend watches the proceedings from a distance with his binoculars. After the services Mike sees more than he bargained for. A mysterious Tall Man arrives in a hearse and picks Tommy's coffin up by himself and loads it into the hearse with his bare hands. Mike, bewildered by what he saw, rides out of Morningside in a hurry, but not before being spotted by the Tall Man. [Full view - 41 kb Mike visits a psychic living in the neighborhood and confesses to her about what he saw at the cemetery. The psychic tells Mike that it was all in his mind and that fear is the real killer. Still not convinced, Mike begins to notice strange things and decides to break into Morningside at night and spy on it's occupants. After encountering the Tall Man and his minions, Mike narrowly escapes and returns home. Mike tells Jody about the horrific things he saw at Morningside and that they have to do something. Jody, reluctant to believe his little brother, is finally convinced when Mike shows him his evidence. Now its up to Jody, Reggie and Mike to figure out the nature of the Tall Man and stop him.

A clean-up crew of nasty hooded dwarfs cart off the freshly killed corpses. Presiding over this repulsive harvesting of countless human souls is the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm), an otherworldly being of great power and cruelty. Opposing the Tall Man's plans at every turn is Michael (A. Michael Baldwin), who was made an orphan by the sinister undertaker and Reggie (Reggie Bannister), an ice cream man turned gun-toting Rambo. Created by cinematic jack of all trades - Don Coscarelli - the Phantasm horror series has long been a reliable mainstay of the terror genre. The latest chilling chapter, Phantasm: Oblivion, makes it world premiere at the Toronto FantAsia Film Festival this coming Tuesday night. A special showing of which Coscarelli and the Tall Man himself, Angus Scrimm, will be attending. Jam! Shot for $300,000, and written, directed, photographed and edited by Coscarelli. I love all of these films but both this original and the recent Phantasm Oblivion sequel are my favourires. This first film contains some fabulous imagery, an exceptional score, comedy, and impressive low-budget effects. Of course the "sphere" is the most famous of these. The sphere sequence in this film is the most horrifying from the entire series, due to the way that you can see the dead an's urine pooling around his jeans. It horrified me anyway! Most unpleasant! According to this dvd's liner notes (and the commentary), the sphere was inspired by one of Don's nightmares, and fishing lines and reverse-photography helped to create this convincing effect. This film introduces Angus Scrimm (stage name) as the nefarious Tall Man, creature from another dimension, one of horror's greatest screen villains (IMHO). Backed up by the regular Phantasm cast of Michael Baldwin, Reggie Bannister, and Bill Thornbury.
