COVERAGE INSIDE STORY: The courtship of Philip Morris. Page A1. It was 4-foot-tall Johnny Roventini, portraying a hotel bellhop, who made that first on-radio call in 1934: "Call . . . for . . . Philip . . . Morris." But it was Richmond, Henrico County and Virginia that perfected it. The announcement came Tuesday: Philip Morris USA is moving its headquarters here, alongside its cigarette-manufacturing operation. Two cheers! That's more jobs for the area. That's more money for the area. One cause for hesitation. The cigarette industry is not exactly a public darling. Or have you not seen restaurants slowly squeezing out smokers?

Have much about these from researchs of siser Mary Euphrasia a catholic sister in Wichita kansas area. Her real name was Ruth Lavinia. She worked on this line for many years in the 1950-s and 1960s. Have republished much of her work on my website but it appears the website will go off line soon. (it was a free no pay website) I will still list the site below in case it still works

Seen Any Scary Movies Lately?
New BPAA study shows just how much bowling would be hurt by a nationwide smoking ban. February 1999 IT WAS ALMOST to be expected in the wake of CEO Doug Stanard's departure, so AMF Bowling Inc.'s announcing of several key senior management changes in early December caught few by surprise. For starters, Larry Kind, senior vice president, Bowling Products, will rejoin AMF's U.S. Bowling Center Operations in January 1999. Jim Gaffney, chairman of Vermont Investments Ltd. in New Zealand, has been tapped to chair the Bowling Products Operating Committee, and play a key role in the strategic review of AMF's Bowling Products business along with the Boston-based Bain Consulting. Randy Daniel, in charge of all manufacturing and bowling product decisions as vice president of Manufacturing, will report to Gaffney during the transition period. And to create a more fulfilling and more communicative work environment for its employees, AMF has tapped veteran Al Cornish to be its vice president of Human Resources. Perhaps the biggest surprise was revealed when AMF, in announcing a restructuring of its international operations, noted that Steve Mackie was relinquishing his post as vice president, International Operations/Special Events. Mackie has been with the company for 18 years, and had made many significant contributions to the company's growth. Also of note internationaly, Olle Sahlgren has been named senior vice president, Asia/Pacific Sales, headquartering in Hong Kong.

50. May 30 1999 Sermon
I’ll move on soon, I promise, but shouldn’t we note the death of johnny roventini, the bellhop who shouted Call for Philip Morris on radio, print, and TV
http://www.uuwayland.org/sermons/990530.htm
"MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND SUNDAY REMEMBRANCES" (reflecting as usual on some of those who died in the previous twelve months, presented here in a longer version, much reduced in the giving; also included in the service were three hymns by Carl Seaburg, a dozen poems for children and others by Shel Silverstein, and a reflection by the student intern, Robin Zucker, on a dozen people who had died who had been important to her growing up, like Shari Lewis and the author of the books about Eloise) A Sermon Delivered at the First Parish in Wayland, Mass.
by the Rev. Ken Sawyer
on May 30, 1999 Robin was too young for Buffalo Bob [as she mentioned], and I was too old, though my younger sister must have watched it, because I do know most of the characters: Clarabell the Clown, Chief Thunderthud, Princess Summerfall Winterspring, Phineas T. Bluster, Flub-a-Dub, and, of course, Howdy Doody himself. Some characters for children last longer, like Frances the badger, in books illustrated by Lillian Hobam, who then wrote and drew the books about Arthur the chimpanzee. She died this year, as did Helen Mayer, the creator of Dumbo, the young flying circus elephant. But more memorable still, to most kids who grew up in the last twenty-five years, are the characters created by Jeffrey Moss, Oscar the Grouch and the Cookie Monster, both from the TV series, Sesame Street. In case you have ever wondered, it was he who wrote the contemporary aria, Rubber Ducky, and I Love Trash, too. Other song-writers died, including the original singing cowboy, Gene Autry, who not only sang a lot of hits, but wrote some, too, like "Here Comes Santa Claus." I don’t suppose their names would mean much here, but the people died who wrote the theme songs to Route 66 (Bobby Troup), I Love Lucy (Marco Rizo), and Mighty Mouse (Marshall Barer), as well as the top-40 hits Mockingbird (Charlie Foxx), The Battle of New Orleans (Jimmy Driftwood), and Shake, Rattle, and Roll, often cited as the beginning of rock and roll.

57. Breaking The Sports Connection With Alcohol And Tobacco Marketing

Breaking the Sports Connection with Alcohol and Tobacco Marketing
William DeJong, Ph.D.
Address to the Conference on
Athletic Prevention, Programming, and Leadership Education (APPLE)
Dallas, Texas
February 3, 1996
Audience: Student Athlete Peer Educators Advertising for alcohol and tobacco seems to be everywhere. And everywhere we turn in magazines, newspapers, billboards, and store displays alcohol and tobacco companies seem to make every effort to associate their products with sports. It is an odd association, when you think about it. In his satirical book, Thank You for Smoking , writer Christopher Buckley wrote about a small circle of lobbyists for the alcohol and tobacco industries who called themselves "The Merchants of Death." It was an apt name. You've heard the statistics: tobacco use is estimated to kill over 435,000 people every year, while alcohol use is estimated to kill over 100,000 every year. That's a lot of sports fans in fact, enough fans to fill the Rose Bowl more than 5 times. It is, as I say, an odd association.

  • Isabelle Sinic :
    Philip Morris, Incorporated
    Introduction
The specificity of tobacco industries among other corporations derives from the nature of the product sold. Their capacity to grow and develop by selling a product hazardous for health and even lethal in many cases makes them stand side by side with the alcohol industries. How is this possible and above all to such a global extent ?
Philip Morris is a leader in this double-dealing. Moving along this paradoxical issue - in short why and how do people keep being taken in by the tobacco industry ? - my point will be to focus precisely upon the shift constantly operated by tobacco corporations, intending to turn negative considerations (health related issues and costly addiction) into positive aspects (freedom of the consumer and democratic workplace for the happy few of the Philip Morris family), or if not possible, to counterbalance and hide them.
Several figures may help illustrate my point :
Philip Morris manufactures more than 160 cigarette brands in some 170 countries.
