JOE ‘BULLET’ ROGAN Born: July 28, 1889
Deceased: March 4, 1967 "Bullet" Rogan was a star for the Kansas City Monarchs for almost twenty years. The right-hander used a no-windup delivery, a sidearm motion, and always kept the ball down. In addition to his basic pitches, he also threw a forkball, palmball, and spitter. Joe Rogan, the 15th Negro Leagues player inducted into the Hall of Fame (1998). Rogan's son, Wilber, accepted on behalf of his father, who died in 1967. Wilber Rogan spoke proudly of his father's ability to pitch and hit. "The two questions I get all the time are how he got his nickname Bullett and who was fastest — him or Satchel Paige," Wilber Rogan said. "I always answered that I really don't know. "I do know that Satchel need a designated hitter when he was on the mound. When dad was on the mound, he was batting cleanup."

VOL.20 NO.36 ARTS : A CUPPA HOT JOE
Joe Rogan Is Steamed By Practically Everything, and He Raves About It All in His Stand-Up Act
A Cuppa Hot Joe
BY J. C. SHAKESPEARE
May 4, 2001:

Joe Rogan is a ranter. Throw out any topic, from the origin of the pyramids in Egypt to the electoral process in today's United States, and he'll have an opinion on it. Not just a pat, culled-from-the-morning-talk-shows opinion, but one that he has spent some time considering. When delivered with Rogan's characteristic energy and passion, his opinions are often hysterically funny. The raw honesty and intensity of his performances place him among a rare breed of stand-ups like Sam Kinison and Bill Hicks, who weren't afraid to share their deepest, darkest thoughts with a roomful of strangers. Unlike most comics, who get into stand-up in hopes of one day landing a sitcom deal, Rogan used his fame acquired on the hit show NewsRadio to broaden his audience in comedy clubs across the country. His first love has remained performing live, and make no mistake about it, you will not see the dumb but lovable electrician Joe Garelli when you come to the club. What you will see is a rabblerousing dynamo who freely speaks his mind, a refreshing change from the polished and scripted laugh-crafters who have made stand-up comedy the somewhat tired art that it is today. Rogan exudes a mad joy for life in all its insanity, depravity, and delicious dirt; if Henry Miller had done stand-up, it would have come out like Joe Rogan's act.

29. Joe Rogan
joe rogan possessed the second most physical acting style of the cast, and I found his expressive hand movements always a delight to watch.
http://www.newsradioart.com/Pages/IntroJoe.html
Joe : "Dude. That was a little harsh." Lisa : "Oh what. So now you want a piece of me, is that it?" Joe : "No…not at all." Lisa : "Good." Joe : [to Beth] "I always knew she’d ask me that question some day. I just didn’t think it’d be in that tone." ("Chock" [4-11])
"Your last name’s Garelli?"
Joe Rogan possessed the second most physical acting style of the cast, and I found his expressive hand movements always a delight to watch. In the early days of the show it was too easy for myopic television journalist-critics to overlook the strength of Rogan’s acting. One writer even called him a "Tony Danza wannabe," a misjudgment that, to his credit, the writer amended in a later article. Once you realize how fantastic Rogan’s timing was or how fully realized was his character Joe Garelli do you come to appreciate his skills as a comedic actor. Joe was the balancing force of the cast. He could be well adjusted to counterbalance the antics of Matthew or Bill (and he was often paired in scenes with Matthew). However, when needed he could play up his more insane side through his insistence on fixing everything himself or a statement affirming his belief in UFOs that bordered on paranoia. Furthermore, as another illustration of the fact that comedy relies on creating absurdity, rich comedy was mined by playing off Joe’s masculinity. Sometimes it was comedy based on Joe’s machismo taken to the point of absurdity. Examples include the lines he used on Catherine in "Massage Chair" [3-3]. After working on Catherine’s desk, the following conversation takes place.

Fear Factor
Mondays on NBC (8-9 p.m. ET)
“The best thing about this show,” says Joe Rogan, host of NBC’s reality television series “Fear Factor,” “is that the contestants have no idea if their fear – be it snakes, heights or whatever – will come in to play until the moment they have to perform the stunt. In addition, they have no idea what the stunt is, so there’s no way to prepare for it. Everyone is on even ground.” Television viewers mostly know Rogan from his starring role as of Joe Garelli, the resident electrician at WNYX radio, on the comedy series “NewsRadio” (1995-99), as well as his brief appearance on the series “Hardball.” Rogan’s television appearances for standup include “Caroline’s Comedy Hour,” “MTV’s Half-Hour Comedy Hour,” and “Comedy from the Danger Zone,” just to name a few. Rogan recorded some of his standup comedy performances on his debut comedy album, “I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday,” for Warner Bros. Records. Performing standup comedy in clubs across the United States has helped Rogan appreciate the steady work schedule of a television series that tapes in one city. “Standup comedy is the best job in the world,” he says. “I can speak my mind, let off steam and get paid for it, but working on a series allows me a different kind of creativity, and it’s a chance to work with a very talented group of people.” Rogan’s boyhood idol, Richard Pryor, continues to be an inspiration to the young actor/comedian in both his professional and his personal life. “Pryor was the first really honest comedian,” he says. “My act could be classified as ‘unedited,’ but I try to keep my audience in mind while focusing on the truth. I never want to compromise my act just to get a laugh.”

The Blockbuster Hollywood Christmas Spectacular
Sunday, December 8 on NBC (7-8 p.m. ET)
Joe Rogan hosts NBC’s hit reality show “Fear Factor” (Mondays 8-9p.m. ET) which pits real people against each other, extreme challenges and themselves in the hope of taking home a cash prize of up to $50,000 at the end of each one hour, primetime episode. After debuting as the top-rated summer series of 2001, “Fear Factor” went on to become the number one rated new reality show of the 2001-2002 television season. Rogan co-starred on the series “NewsRadio,” “Hardball” in addition to appearing in the specials “Caroline’s Comedy Hour,” “MTV’s Half-Hour Comedy Hour,” “Comedy from the Danger Zone,” “Keeping America Funny,” “Buster’s Happy Hour,” “Stand-Up Spotlight” and “Spotlight Cafe.” He recorded some of his standup comedy performances on his debut comedy album, “I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday,” for Warner Bros. Records. Rogan was born in Newark, New Jersey, raised in Boston, and now lives in Los Angeles. In his spare time, Rogan enjoys playing pool and honing his standup act at various comedy clubs. In addition, he is an avid martial-arts enthusiast and holds a second-degree black belt in tae kwon do. He was a four-time Massachusetts state champion, and was U.S. Open Lightweight Champion and Grand Champion in all weight classes in 1987. Says Rogan: “The martial arts really kept me in focus as an adolescent because of the long training hours.”
