Three Harvard students are looking forward to spending two years studying at Oxford University, thanks to the estate of British philanthropist and colonial administrator Cecil Rhodes. The Rhodes Scholarship winners are Jonathan Finer Akash Kapur '97, and Navin Narayan '99. The three are among 32 students this year to win the prestigious scholarship nationwide. Harvard, which has topped the nation in number of winners for six straight years, tied this year with the University of Chicago, also with three winners. The scholarship pays tuition and fees and provides a stipend of about $10,000 annually. It can be extended to a maximum of three years. The U.S. winners were selected from a pool of 909 applicants from 310 colleges and universities around the country. Established in 1904, the scholarship is open to students in 18 countries around the world and is intended to fulfill Rhodes' dream of promoting international understanding and peace. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, and involvement in extracurricular and athletic activities. Rhodes Scholars Jonathan Finer of Winthrop House said that hearing he'd won the scholarship was "overwhelmingly exciting." For him, studying at Oxford will be another in a series of steps that have introduced him to increasingly wider horizons.

Crusades
A Commentary on the BBC Series
By Paul Crawford Recently one of the medieval discussion lists raised questions about the usefulness of the BBC Crusades series, hosted by Terry Jones. Without picking too many nits (easy to do to popular presentations of medieval subject matter, and not always fair), let me give my basic objections to the series.
  • Jones based his approach on an outdated historiographical approach. He presents the Crusaders as stupid, smelly barbarians who were merely out to make a quick buck (denarius?) and if possible have some fun breaking somebody's head while they were at it. This used to be the general view of crusades, and one of its best-known proponents is Sir Steven Runciman. It mars his otherwise superb narrative history of the crusades. But this view has been carefully disassembled by a number of crusade historians in the last 30 years or more, most notably by Jonathan Riley-Smith. Riley-Smith and his students (and others) have shown that there were at least as many motives for crusading as there were crusaders, and that crusading was generally a very expensive and risky proposition that drained Western Europe of money and manpower. It was very far from being just a way for western criminals to enhance their personal fortunes. As for the idea that crusaders were merely smelly, stupid barbarians: well, that would likely find acceptance with the same people who believe in the Dark Ages and

UA narrows search for Rhodes Scholarship applicants to four By Jason A. Vrtis

Arizona Daily Wildcat Rhodes scholarship nominees Joseph Holmgren (left), biochemistry senior, and Jonathan Pillow, mathematics and philosophy senior, arm wrestle outside their residence hall. These two applicants, who are roommates, will also be competing against each other as the final selections for the scholarship are made. For the first time in its 94-year history, the Rhodes Scholarship committee has asked universities nationwide to limit the number of scholarship applicants they nominate. With that comes stronger competition and a better applicant pool, and that is exactly what has occurred at the University of Arizona, said Richard Cosgrove, campus coordinator for scholarships. Eight UA students applied for the Rhodes Scholarship this year but after the nominee cuts only five were allowed to continue in the application process. Four remain and will advance to the first round of interviews at the Arizona Inn Dec. 3 and 4. The four students are Joseph Holmgren, biochemistry senior; Danielle Manuszak, physics senior; Jonathan Pillow, mathematics and philosophy senior; and Jonathan Schmitt, agricultural and resource economics senior.

    How I Coped With Loss
By Brett Hardy – Age 14 When most eighth graders think of loss, they think of losing their CD’s or their favorite shirt. I think of my mother and one of my friends. My mother died of breast cancer and my friend died of cystic fibrosis. They were very different experiences, but many of my feelings were the same. At first, I was shocked. As I grasped what had happened, I became sad. Once I was more comfortable with my grief, I was able to be a little angry with the person who died, for leaving me. I found out this is a very common reaction. I often felt scared that what happened to them would happen to me, and that’s a very common reaction, too. Though my reactions were similar, the losses were very different. My mother was in many ways my best friend. We did almost everything together. She was sick on and off for seven years; she died when I was ten. In that respect, my loss was very different from the loss of someone in a car crash. I had a chance to say goodbye to my mother. However, I was forced to take care of her, physically and emotionally, as best I could. I was very scared. I had trouble sleeping, my grades dropped, I would be sitting in class and just start crying. After my mother died, I moved and left my home, my school and my friends. These are all things that I am still working through. I started a new school in fifth grade. In my sixth grade year, I met Jonathan Rhodes. Jonathan always had lung problems, but they were not very serious. We became good friends. At the end of sixth grade, he was absent a couple of days a week, and was in and out of the hospital. In March of seventh grade, we found out he was dead. None of us had expected it.

MONITORING WILDLIFE POPULATIONS: HOW USEFUL IS DISTRIBUTION DATA FOR DETECTING POPULATION CHANGE?
USING GEOGRAPHIC VARIATION IN AFRICAN CROWNED EAGLE DIETS TO ASSESS PREY COMMUNITY STRUCTURE
Composition and diversity of African crowned eagle diets from five geographic regions across sub-Saharan African are related to mammalian prey community composition, habitat type, and reserve size. Crowned eagle diet composition is also correlated with the relative abundances and composition of different prey species. Although there is not a perfect correlation between diet composition and prey abundance, once dietary preferences for specific prey types are taken into account, it becomes possible to use diet to estimate the composition of the prey community give a measure if community health. Where traditional survey techniques (e.g. line transects) are difficult to use (e.g. observing cryptic species, or in areas where there is heavy hunting pressure), monitoring top predator diet composition is proposed as a complementary survey technique.
