But this same guy, Steve Poltz, wrote "You Were Meant For Me" with Jewel, even played her junkie boyfriend on MTV. Which means Poltz is now a sensitive guy, this decade's answer to Jackson Browne, this year's Duncan Sheik. Of course, when Browne wasn't mooning over somebody's baby, he was taking swipes at Daryl Hannah (OK, allegedly), so love isn't always a simple thing. On "One Left Shoe," Poltz offers love songs straight ("Everything About You"), shaken ("I Thought I Saw You Last Night") and stirred ("Leavin' Again"). There are times when his voice is so earnest and his acoustic guitar so soft, you'd swear James Taylor could left-hook him to a pulp. He's the kind of guy who sees a single tennis shoe wrapped around a telephone wire and doesn't think "Kids!" but rather: "That's me. One left shoe, lonely without you ..."

Steve Poltz In The UK When I went into the stage area there were just three other people there, two men and a woman. but one of the men was instantly recognisable, it was Steve Poltz with a bottle of Budweiser in hand! Fortunately earlier in the evening I'd been to Virgin Megastore and bought a magazine which had a picture of Jewel in it. So when Steve didn't look too occupied I went up to him with the magazine and asked him to sign Jewel's picture. He seemed very surprised, he said it was his first UK autograph! I asked him about other European gigs but he said they were all probably private events. I planted myself on a stool to the right of the stage and by about 8:15PM Steve was ready to play. By this time there were about 20-30 people standing around the edges in front of the stage. He only performed a small set, less than an hour in total. It was a mixture of songs from his album and older songs including You Were Meant For Me. At the end he chatted with some of the audience, I thanked him for playing The Great Mystery which is one of my favourites. I said hello to his manager Bob Duffey, he thought I must be from Mercury Records as that was where the majority of the audience were from. I said I was a big fan of Jewel's and I'd heard about Steve's tour from the Jewel list. Bob was very complimentary about Jewel saying what a nice person she was. As I mentioned previously, it does have a bit of a strolling sound to it. It has a simple beat, and is a great song. It's hard not to sing along with this one. I could (and would, if space permitted) go on and on about this CD. I recommend it whole-heartedly. I think it's an album worth getting, and playing over and over until you know the lyrics by heart. Put it on, press repeat, and just lose yourself in great music. You'll be glad you did. A Few Moments with Steve Poltz AMZ SP - Whatever you want to talk about, baby....anything. AMZ SP - Oh yes. Yet this brilliantly captivating west coast singer songwriter has had a number one in the US - he co-wrote with Alaska's lass Jewel over the last few years and finally now is breaking out on his own ground, as shaky as it may prove to be. But before that, when he was just a twinkle in Miss Kilcher's eye in Java Joe's cafe in San Diego, an area blessed with a wonderfully warm community spirit. Steve Poltz played with his band The Rugburns, who toured the States coast to coast numerous times, building up a strong following. Originally from Halifax, Novoscotia, Poltz is now as San Diegan as they get, with that hilarious sense of wit and laid back attitude to life and music. The gig in Whelan's was an intimate affair; not many people and a quiet air - but it felt like a singsong amongst friends. Moving through some of the deep and slow "sappy" love songs on to the more whimsical and light-hearted tunes from his album 'One Left Shoe', released on Mercury records in 1998, Poltz managed without effort to hush everyone to whispers and raise them to roars at the end of every encore (I think there were as many as four and I would have called for more!). Towards the end he, for fools like me who sometimes remember having fun more than having been inspired, brought out the old favourite 'the Star Wars Song', a track which is so silly you've got to yell like Chewbacca! And then, with a bow it was over. For such a small crowd, they certainly raised the roof before - guitar set aside - he came down to meet people, ask for travel tips around Donegal and swap e mail addresses.

Steve Poltz, one of America's most talented men has been entertaining the world for more than a decade. Hard to believe seeing as though, he only graced my world (Australia) in March, 1999 when he toured with great friend and co-writer Jewel. Steve and Jewel first met at the Innerchange Coffee House in San Diego where Jewel was waitressing and Steve was playing his tunes. Steve was 32 and Jewel was just a tender 19. "Next thing I know, we started writing songs together" Steve stated. It was Steve who helped launch Jewel's career. Jewel began singing once a week at the Innerchange. Steve says "Within six months, there were limousines pulling up and people offering her record deals". Later, they became regulars at Java Joe's Coffee House in San Diego. Steve and Jewel have co-wrote a few songs together. The most memorable and famous would have to be "You Were Meant For Me" which appeared on the Jewel album, "Pieces Of You". "You Were Meant For Me" was one of the biggest selling singles in recent history. By the end of 1997, it had been on Billboards "Hot 100" chart for 59 weeks, the longest any single has remained on the chart, ever!! Steve and Jewel have also written the songs "Adrian", which is a very touching song and appears on Jewel's "Pieces of You" album, and "Impala", which is backed up by the "Mighty Mighty Bostones". No, it's not about a loveable dear as I originally thought, it's actually about an early model car called an Impala!! "Impala" appears on Steve's first solo album, "One Left Shoe".
