Not alone into the sunset but into the company of friends who have gone before Everyone knew him as "Wild Bill Elliott". Bill was a 178th "original" at Ft. Benning in 1965, and at Phu Loi. He was the very first 178th crewman to be wounded in action when the Unit got to Vietnam in 1966. The Elliotts attended seven Boxcar Reunions, starting with the 1995 Ft. Benning Reunion. Taps Cluster Monroe "Bill" Elliott Cluster Montoe "Bill" Elliott, a resident of Panama City and former resident of Webb, died Friday, September 27, 2002 at Bay Medical Center in Panama City, Florida following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Mike Shirah and Rev. Doug Powell officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Smyrna Baptist Church Cemetary with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will be at the home of Jerry and Dorothy Tew, 5263 Old Webb Road, Web, Alabama. Mr. Elliott was born December 8, 1929, in Rutherford County, North Carolina and lived the early years of his life there. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars having served in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1969 after 21 years of service. Mr. Elliott was employed with Daniel Construction Company for twelve years prior to his retirement in 1993. He was a resident of Webb before moving to Panama City nine years ago. He was a Mason and was of the Baptist faith.

The virtual base on which the whole of bluegrass music rests, William Smith (Bill) Monroe was born at Rosine, Kentucky, on September 13, 1911, the youngest of eight children. Brother Charlie was next youngest, having been born eight years earlier. This gap, coupled with Bill's poor eyesight, inhibited the youngest son from many of the usual play activities and gave him an introverted nature which carried through into later life. Aside from his musical family, one of Monroe's early influences was a black musician from Rosine, Arnold Schultz. Bill would gig with him and rated him a fine musician with an unrivalled feel for the blues. At this time he also started to hear gramophone records featuring such performers as Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers. In 1934, Radio WLS in Chicago, for whom the three brothers (Birch on fiddle, Charlie on guitar, and Bill on mandolin) had been working on a semi-professional basis, offered them full-time employment. Birch decided to give up music, but Charlie and Bill reforemed as the Monroe Brothers. In 1938, they went their separate ways. Bill formed the Kentuckians and moved to Radio KARK, Atlanta Georgia, where the first of the Blue Grass Boys line-ups was evolved. Bill also began to sing lead and to take mandolin solos rather than just remaining part of the general sound. In 1939, he auditioned for the Opry and George Hay was impressed enough to sign him. By 1945, Monroe's style had undergone several changes. Most notable was the addition of Earl Scruggs, with a driving banjo style, putting the final, distinctive seal on Monroe's bluegrass sound. Flatt and Scruggs remained with Bill until 1948. Among Monroe's best known songs from the period is "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Included here is another of Monroe's hits: "I'm Going Back to Old Kentucky."

And the part of country music that has been analyzed the most is bluegrass. This is surprising since it is its pure simplicity, accompanied by outstanding musicians, which has attracted such a large audience to bluegrass. Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music, explained it this way: "To me bluegrass is really THE country music. It was meant for country people." Therefore, it is surprising that bluegrass gained strong support in urban areas at a time when the trend was to popularize country music. It took a proud, stubborn man like Bill Monroe to resist the pop tide and make blugrass what it is today. T here are few performers who have had the solid country music background that William Smith Monroe had at a very early age. He was born September 13, 1911, on a farm in Jerusalem Ridge, near Rosine, Kentucky. His father, Buck, was a farmer, saw mill operator and noted step-dancer. His mother, Malissa, played fiddle, accordion and harmonica, and was a respected local singer of old-time ballads. Among his eight siblings, older brothers Harry and Birch played fiddle, and brother Charlie and sister Bertha played guitar. All of them were influenced by Bill's uncle, Pendleton Vandiver, the "Uncle Pen" about whom he would write an important song years later. Bill once told an interviewer, "he'd bring his fiddle and he'd stay a night or so, and after supper, why, we'd get up around him and listen to him fiddle - maybe an hour, hour and a half. My father would call bedtime then."

The Monroes were a musical family; his father, known affectionately as Buck, was a noted step-dancer, his mother played fiddle, accordion and harmonica, and was respected locally as a singer of old time songs. Among the siblings, elder brothers Harry and Birch both played fiddle, and brother Charlie After the death of his father, most of the family moved away in their search for work. Birch and Charlie headed north, working for a time in the car industry in Detroit, before moving to Whiting and East Chicago, Indiana, where they were employed in the oil refineries. When he was 18, Bill joined them, and for four years, worked at the Sinclair refinery. At one time, in the Depression, Bill was the only one with work, and the three began to play for local dances to raise money to live on. In 1932, the three Monroe brothers and their girlfriends became part of a team of dancers and toured with a show organised by WLS Chicago, the radio station responsible for the "National Barn Dance" programme. They also played on local radio stations, including WAE Hammond and WJKS Gary, Indiana. In 1934, Bill, finding the touring conflicted with his work, decided to become a full time musician. Soon after, they received an offer to tour for Texas Crystals (the makers of a patent purgative medicine), which sponsored radio programmes in several states. Birch, back in employment at Sinclair and also looking after a sister, decided against a musical career.
