My Introduction To Blue Grass. by Evan N. Reilly Years later, when I was more of a master of Monroe's chosen instrument, I was on the bus with Bill and, again, had my mandolin. But I was playing tunes for him, now. I played "Bill's Dream" and a far way look came into his eyes. He said that he hadn't hear d that tune in years and asked me if he had ever told me the story about that tune. Bill then proceeded to tell me the story behind the writing of the tune; he had had a dream one night that one of his hunting dogs had fallen into an old dry well on the farm. The next day, one of the dogs did fall into a well and Bill wrote the tune to remember the event. These events are some the highlights of my relationship with Bill Monroe. I have had the opportunity to play with him on stage, as well as off-stage. Several times, he exposed the fierce, driving force of his teaching to me, putting his mandolin in my face and playing a passage until I got it right. It was as if I had been locked in his grip (and his grip is another tale) and held hostage to his musical vision. Monroe's musical legacy will be felt wherever the fiddle and banjo get together with the guitar and bass, wherever the mandolin beats out the stark, powerful outlines of Monroe's music.

The hillbilly music tradition goes back hundreds of years, but it was Monroe, with his high-mountain tenor and unique mandolin playing, who made bluegrass what it is today. In 1967 Bill Monroe founded the first Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival, called a " Big Blue Grass Celebration ", to bring his friends together to play the "high lonesome" sound he pioneered.

Radio Etc-Country Tribute to Bill Monroe: "To me bluegrass is really THE country music. It was meant for country people." Bill Monroe.
William Smith Monroe was born September 13, 1911, on a farm near Rosine, Kentucky. His father, Buck, was a farmer, saw mill operator and noted step-dancer. His mother, Malissa, played fiddle, accordion and harmonica, and was a respected local singer of old-time ballads. Among his eight siblings, older brothers Harry and Birch played fiddle, and brother Charlie and sister Bertha played guitar. All of them were influenced by Bill's uncle, Pendleton Vandiver, the "Uncle Pen" about whom he would write an important song years later. Bill once told an interviewer, "he'd bring his fiddle and he'd stay a night or so, and after supper, why, we'd get up around him and listen to him fiddle - maybe an hour, hour and a half. My father would call bedtime then."
By age of 18, Bill was already an accomplished musician, able to play several instruments but mandolin became his favorite. In the summer of 1929, he joined his brothers, Birch and Charlie, working at the Sinclair refinery in Whiting, Indiana.
Bill was married to Caroline Brown in 1935, and soon the Monroe Brothers were making radio appearances in Iowa, Nebraska and the Carolinas and appeared on the

http://www.billmonroe.com/bill_bio.html
Bill Monroe Biography William Smith Monroe was born to father J. B. "Buck" and mother Malissa Vandiver on September 13, 1911, on a farm in Jerusalem Ridge, just outside Rosine, Kentucky. His mother played accordion, fiddle, and harmonica, while his siblings played guitar and fiddle. After his father died when Bill was 16, he moved in with his uncle Pendleton Vandiver (later immortalized in the classic song "Uncle Pen"), who taught Bill to play guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. Perhaps because no one else in the family played it, Bill concentrated on mastering the mandolin. By 1927, Bill joined with his brothers Charlie, who played guitar, and Birch, who played fiddle, to play on broadcasts. They eventually joined with National Barn Dance as dancers. By 1930, the Monroe brothers had found success with "Kentucky Waltz," which peaked at #3, "Footprints in the Snow," which hit #5, and "Blue Grass Ramble." That same year, they secured positions on the radio in Indiana. In 1936, Bill and brother Charlie toured Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina, and South Carolina; they also found time to cut sixty sides for RCA's Bluebird label. Unfortunately, the brothers possessed different musical dreams and visions, and the two parted musical ways in 1938. Bill formed his original band, the Kentuckians, before settling on another name: The Blue Grass Boys.

THE MONROE BROTHERS
For country music, the middle 1930's was an era of tremendous change. Recordings and later, radio, had basically served the function of preserving the folk tradition as it was found in the 1920's, or capitalizing on it, as in the case of Vernon Dahlhart. However, by the mid-1930's, changes were being wrought by the musicians themselves, who, discovering that a reasonably good living could be made in the midst of a nationwide Depression, began to focus their creative energies on both stylizing a distinctly personal "sound" and pleasing a growing public interest as well. In the far west, a young singer from the WLS Barn Dance, named Gene Autry, was revolutionizing both a film and a musical genre with the portrayal of the singing cowboy; in Oklahoma and Texas, Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys were fashioning a unique and dynamic country equivalent of the big dance band; and in the southeast, the Monroe Brothers were dramatically changing the art of the vocal and the instrumental duet, turning what had been basically a vehicle for parlor songs and sentimental ballads into an energy-charged, visceral musical experience. The impact of this change is not only still being felt today, but it is actually continuing to grow, a full 60 years later. Yet, because of the enormous influence of the career of Bill Monroe after he and Charlie dissolved their partnership in 1938, the importance of the Monroe Brothers has been thought of primarily as a precursor to the musical greatness which followed. While there is justification to this view - the Monroe Brothers' music, after all, is full of hints and glimpses of the musical feeling which came to be called bluegrass more than a decade later - it has tended to obscure the powerful musical impact they engendered in the 1930's in and of themselves. It was an impact which did indeed constitute the roots of bluegrass, but also led to a new understanding of musicianship and singing, which changed the face of country music in the southeast in their own time.

He recorded for Columbia between 1945 and 1949; this period included seventeen tracks recorded with a lineup that helped define the new music called "bluegrass": Earl Scruggs on banjo, Lester Flatt on guitar and lead vocal, Chubby Wise on fiddle, and "Cedric Rainwater" (Howard Watts) on bass. In 1950 he signed with Decca and stayed with that label, and its successor, MCA, for the rest of his career. The RCA sessions have been collected on several releases, most recently on "The Essential Bill Monroe and the Monroe Brothers". The Columbia sessions are represented on "The Essential Bill Monroe, 1945-1949", a 2-disc set; the single disc "16 Gems" collects highlights of this period. The Decca recordings are collected on many compilations; the three Bear Family boxed sets offer all the studio recordings from 1950 through 1979, and are highly recommended for completists. The Music of Bill Monroe: 1936-1994 is a good four-disc overview of his entire career, from the Monroe Brothers to his last recordings.

Bill Monroe
Known by fans as the Father of Bluegrass Music, Bill Monroe developed the foundation for his musical success among his music loving family and neighbors in his hometown of Rosine, Kentucky. Monroe began his public career on mandolin as part of a trio with his brothers Birch and Charlie. Later he performed in a duet with Charlie, and in 1938 he formed his own band, The Blue Grass Boys. By the 1940s, Monroe had developed the sound that would soon be known as bluegrass music: mandolin, guitar, banjo, fiddle and bass engaged in loud, fast-paced music making which featured high tenor singing and driving instumental solos. Over the course of the last fifty years, many talented musicians have been part of the Blue Grass Boys, and Bill Monroes hot mandolin playing continues to inspire bluegrass fans and musicians everywhere.
