She later gained her first Broadway role in the musical “Carousel” for which she earned her first Tony Award for best actress featured in a musical – and went on to star in the play “Master Class,” and the musicals “Ragtime.” As a result, McDonald made Broadway history when, at the age of 28, she became the youngest performer to earn three Tonys. On November 2, 2002, McDonald sold out Carnegie Hall when she made her solo recital debut. “Marie Christine,” a musical re-telling of the Medea myth, earned McDonald her fourth Tony nomination for best actress in a musical. In addition to filming “Mister Sterling,” McDonald maintains an active concert schedule. On New Year’s Eve 2002, she made her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic lead by Sir Simon Rattle. Back to Biographies Audra McDonald In less than a decade, soprano Audra McDonald has become one of the most recognized talents on the musical stage. On Broadway, she's earned Tony Awards for featured roles in Ragtime Master Class (1996), and Carousel (1994). The year 1999 proved pivotal for her. It was then that she created the role of Marie Christine in the Lincoln Center Theater world premiere of Sweeney Todd. She also made her Carnegie Hall debut, singing selections from Porgy and Bess with the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas in a concert televised internationally and recorded for BMG Classics. It didn't end there: 1999 also saw her perform with the Cleveland Orchestra and Leonard Slatkin, the Philadelphia Orchestra with Marin Alsop, and the Boston Pops with Keith Lockhart (in the nationally broadcast Evening at Pops). She sang at that year's BBC Proms with Simon Rattle and also performed in the Divas at the Donmar series in London, which was broadcast on PBS in the spring of 2002. Taking what she termed a "mental sabbatical", McDonald auditioned for and landed a role in the touring company of the musical "The Secret Garden". In June 1993, she was asked to audition for the proposed revival of "Carousel"; when she opened her mouth to sing, she fainted. Recovering, McDonald went on to impress the producers and, in a bit of non-traditional casting, landed the role of Carrie Pipperidge. While there were a handful of people who had problems with a black woman playing the role opposite a white man, McDonald and her stunning performance impressed audiences and critics. At the end of the season, she won almost every conceivable award as featured actress in a musical, including the Tony Award.

She originated the title role of the challenging musical tragedy Marie Christine Wit Her latest effort finds her expanding her list of achievements yet again. McDonald is touring the nation to support her upcoming album, a celebration of generally optimistic music dedicated to her new daughter. As evidenced by the impressive list of her achievements, McDonald clearly has staying power. Her performance at Symphony Hall exemplified the work that has left critics and audiences alike eagerly anticipating her next move. The program showcased her technically virtuosic, thoughtful, and stirring interpretations. The 19 songs she performed with a 14-piece big band were a survey of music from the late 1920s to the early 1950s, garnished with a few contemporary songs. McDonald herself demonstrated her strong artistic integrity, her conscious dedication to exploring new territory, and, via her light-hearted stage banter, her easygoing, approachable personality.
