Dr. Robert 'Rocket' Romano (season 4-present)
After two seasons in the recurring role of Dr. Robert Romano on “ER,” Paul McCrane became a series regular in the drama’s sixth season. While McCrane loves his role, he hopes he is nothing like the character whom he describes as “gleefully malicious.” He asserts, “You can’t just hate him. Well, you can really hate him, but there’s something that’s sort of attractive in how much you want to strangle the guy.”
Born and raised in Philadelphia, McCrane began to study guitar in his early teens and his teacher encouraged him to pursue a music career. However, primarily interested in acting, McCrane soon landed his first role in John Guare’s “Landscape of the Body” at the New York Shakespeare Festival. Numerous other Broadway and off-Broadway roles followed, including “The Iceman Cometh” and “Six Degrees of Separation.”
McCrane studied with a number of teachers, most extensively with the noted Uta Hagen. He first surfaced on the big screen in 1980 and has appeared in such films as “Fame,” “The Hotel New Hampshire,” “Robocop,” “The Shawshank Redemption” and the soon to be released “The Last Producer,” directed by Burt Reynolds. He also has an extensive television credit list, including appearances on “From the Earth to the Moon,” “X-Files,” “The Practice” and regular roles on “Cop Rock” and “Under Suspicion.”
A gifted musician and songwriter, McCrane plays guitar and piano. At the age of 16 he wrote the song “Is It Okay If I Call You Mine?” for his girlfriend, and it was later used in the film “Fame.” McCrane now lives with his wife, Dana Kellin, a successful jewelry designer, in Los Angeles. His birthday is January 19.

Paul McCrane Biography
A compact, balding character actor with expressive brown eyes and chiseled features, Paul McCrane first garnered attention as the red-haired openly gay aspiring actor Montgomery McNeill in Alan Parker's "Fame" (1980). The Philadelphia native had begun appearing in school plays and turned pro in 1977 when he made his New York stage debut as Shirley Knight's son in John Guare's "Landscape of the Body". McCrane went on to make his musical stage debut alongside Diane Lane in the award-winning "Runaways" (1978) and has continued to work in the theater. He co-starred in a 1985 Broadway revival of "The Iceman Cometh" and reteamed with Guare for "Six Degrees of Separation" in 1991. Since relocating to California, McCrane acted in several productions at the La Jolla Playhouse, including "Big River" and "As You Like It". After making his film debut in a small role in "Rocky II" (1979), McCrane became an overnight star in "Fame". His believably touching portrayal of an insecure son of a famous movie star helped to anchor that film. Four years later, the actor tackled another role as a homosexual, this time as brother to Jodie Foster in the uneven "The Hotel New Hampshire". His feature presence declined as he worked more in TV, but, with his receding hairline, McCrane reinvented himself as a character player in such films as "Robocop" (1987), and with his turn as a deputy in the 1988 remake of "The Blob", scripted by Frank Darabont. Following a six year absence, he returned to films as a prison guard in Darabont's "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994).

Welcome! I didn't realize how many searches for "Paul McCrane" were leading to this page! I haven't updated for a long time but the site still archives some pretty cool stuff about Paul's career.
The Paul McCrane Fan Page Paul McCrane began his career in theatre in 1976 in The Physicists at the age of 15. A noted performance in Landscape of the Body followed in 1977. Paul McCrane starred as Montgomery MacNeil in the 1980 Alan Parker film FAME . Since then, he has worked extensively in the theatre, appeared in a few films, and has acted in numerous television shows. Most recently, he played the title character in one of last season's best X-Files episodes: "Leonard Betts" as well as a continuing role on ER This page grew out of my X-Files fascination, specifically the "Leonard Betts" episode. Halfway through I realized I recognized the actor playing the title role. (Hey, that's Paul McCrane's head!) AND a viewing of FAME in early October, 1997 after not seeing the film for years. I became re-aquainted with how phenomenal Paul's performance as Montgomery was and I remembered how I felt about Alan Parker's story of a handful of talented young people....
