ENCYCLICAL LETTER
UT UNUM SINT
OF THE HOLY FATHER
JOHN PAUL II
ON COMMITMENT
TO ECUMENISM
INTRODUCTION Ut unum sint! The call for Christian unity made by the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council with such impassioned commitment is finding an ever greater echo in the hearts of believers, especially as the Year 2000 approaches, a year which Christians will celebrate as a sacred Jubilee, the commemoration of the Incarnation of the Son of God, who became man in order to save humanity. The courageous witness of so many martyrs of our century, including members of Churches and Ecclesial Communities not in full communion with the Catholic Church, gives new vigour to the Council's call and reminds us of our duty to listen to and put into practice its exhortation. These brothers and sisters of ours, united in the selfless offering of their lives for the Kingdom of God, are the most powerful proof that every factor of division can be transcended and overcome in the total gift of self for the sake of the Gospel. Christ calls all his disciples to unity.

The Centenary of the promulgation of the Encyclical which begins with the words "Rerum novarum ",(1) by my predecessor of venerable memory Pope Leo XIII, is an occasion of great importance for the present history of the Church and for my own Pontificate. It is an Encyclical that has the distinction of having been commemorated by solemn Papal documents from its fortieth anniversary to its ninetieth. It may be said that its path through history has been marked by other documents which paid tribute to it and applied it to the circumstances of the day.(2) In doing likewise for the hundredth anniversary, in response to requests from many Bishops, Church institutions, and study centres, as well as business leaders and workers, both individually and as members of associations, I wish first and foremost to satisfy the debt of gratitude which the whole Church owes to this great Pope and his "immortal document".(3) I also mean to show that the vital energies rising from that root have not been spent with the passing of the years, but rather

Allan Bloom's Last Testament
By Paul Varnell Originally appeared May 17, 2000, in the Chicago Free Press. Allan Bloom, subject of a new novel by Saul Bellow, stood head and shoulders above most critics of modern education and contemporary culture. But many of the conservatives who lionized him did not know, or did not want to know, or did not want it known that they were admiring a gay man. SAUL BELLOW is one of America's most distinguished novelists. Whenever he publishes a new work it is a literary event. But his most recent novel "Ravelstein," based on Bellow's long friendship with University of Chicago political philosopher Allan Bloom, is something of a political/cultural event as well because it reveals to the general public that Bloom was gay and, apparently, died of AIDS. Bloom himself became a cultural phenomenon back in 1987 when he published his famous polemic "The Closing of the American Mind," a scathing criticism of modern American university education for its shallowness and triviality.

Paul Schmelzer, 1937-1997
Photograph by Peggy Scherer It is with great sadness that we inform Safety Network readers of the death of NCH staffer, Paul Schmelzer. Paul died unexpectedly of coronary failure in early April. Paul worked as the library assistant for NCH for five years; prior to his work at NCH, he worked with the Homelessness Information Exchange (HIE). An avid newspaper reader, Paul first learned about HIE from a Washington Post article while he was living on the streets of Washington, DC. He approached HIE Director, Dana Harris, with a hand-written list of 50-60 local organizations he thought she should be aware of, and asked if he could do some work for the organization. Ms. Harris gave him an issue of the HIE newsletter and asked him to look it over and edit it. Paul returned the issue covered with edits and corrections, and was promptly offered a part-time position. Paul joined the NCH staff when HIE merged with NCH in 1992. Paul will be remembered for his outstanding work at both NCH and HIE. The NCH research collection on housing, homelessness, and poverty the largest collection of its kind is a testament to Paul's hard work, ingenuity, devotion to learning, and desire to share knowledge with others. Paul had an unusual knack for tracking down and obtaining, often at no cost, difficult-to-find materials. The library has been renamed in Paul's memory as The Paul Schmelzer Collection on Homelessness.

Why don't you do it on the road, Paul McCartney "That would be good. I do fancy that actually," the former Beatle said in a statement Wednesday regarding plans to launch his first world tour in eight years this fall. McCartney, whose debuted at number two on the charts this week while the special of the same name drew about 15 million people Friday, is putting the final touches on a new studio album for release in September, at which time he says he's likely to launch some kind of world tour. a d v e r t i s e m e n t
"I think it is very likely that I might tour around then. I like to go out on the road with a new album and I'm very excited by this one," McCartney says. "I've been recording it in the States and we recorded 18 tracks in just two weeks. Recording new songs makes you enthusiastic and want to get out and play them." The tour, described by Reuters as possibly a series of "impromptu shows," would be McCartney's first since 1993's Off the Ground tour. Although in the interim, McCartney has overseen performances of his classical works and done one-night stands, like his infamous

Tuesday, May 1, 2001 Four Big Ones Today marks the 4th anniversary of Hypodermia...if you count in months. Not a significant yardstick next to folks like Dave Winer and Evan Williams and Dan Gillmor and and Lawrence Lee . But a lot of bloggin' nonetheless, especially if you count the pre-larval stages back in November and December. I've been introduced to a whole new subculture, have learned a lot (albeit not nearly enough) about Web writing, and experimented with a new form of communication still in early incubation. Some highlights that come to mind include the Gatekeepers essay, Hypodermia getting journalistically accredited , after initially being rejected, to cover O'Reilly's P2P conference, the move to San Francisco, the visit to Glide Memorial , and the memorable stroll through the Stanford foothills with Dave, where my digital camera caught the Winer gusto with all its Zorba-like celebration... Plus all the great wordplay. From writer's blog to blogorrhea we let the good times blogroll.

Friday, May 31, 2002 Lessig is Moore Last night I went to hear Lawrence Lessig at the Mechanics Institute Library in downtown San Francisco. The library the West Coast's oldest, in the same location since 1910 is quite a wonderful community resource. They are member-supported ($85 a year to join) but open to the public. The role of libraries in today's world is an increasingly vital concept to preserve. Brewster Kahle , the Internet Archive founder, put it well at Tim O'Reilly's Emerging Technology conference recently. A lot of people today think, because of the Internet and online publishing, that libraries are irrelevant. Why not just let the publishers decide what gets preserved, distributed, and made available for public consumption? Kahle impishly showed a slide of an e-book license that included a long list of cannots, including: The user cannot read this work aloud. So Alice In Wonderland and Pippy Longstocking are out...no more reading to the kids at bedtime.

76. All 10 Million Europeans: Demographic Collapse.
Fear of population growth and ecological crisis may soon be replaced by fear of population collapse. Recent global forecasts include scenarios of decline, in Europe it seems unavoidable.
http://web.inter.nl.net/users/Paul.Treanor/nohumans.html
ALL 10 MILLION EUROPEANS
The last two generations grew up with the idea of the "population explosion". For a century the world has lived with constant upward revision of population forecasts: the only question was if the growth would be fast, or very fast. And the last generation faced the question: how many billions can this planet support? So it is a culture shock, when new projections of global population include scenarios of dramatic population decline - without any meteorite impacts, new epidemics, or famines. Or when a UN report suggests that Europe needs 700 million immigrants to maintain its age structure... Is the future population nightmare not rural Bangladesh, but rural Estonia? Revised March 2003. The myth of population growth was strong until recently. A few years ago, the website of the Latvian Demographic Research centre included this image of the population boom, a 1997 painting by A. Bauskenieks called Demographic Explosion. But the image is the opposite of the truth: the population of Latvia is falling - month after month, year after year, as the tables at Latvian Statistics show. In recent years, population fell from 2 529 000 at the start of 1995, to 2 330 000 at the end of 2002, it is now 12% under the 1990 peak. Apparently, the Demographic Research centre has realised the painting is inappropriate, it has been moved or deleted from the website. Latvia now needs research and policy for a demographic collapse, not for a population explosion.

This is not merely a terminological quibble. The existence of these two different concepts rather reflects an actual social condition, the understanding of which can take us a long way towards a better appreciation of the place and the function of the intellectual in society. For the first definition, broad as it is, applies accurately to a large group of people forming an important part of society: individuals working with their minds rather than with their muscles, living off their wits rather than off their hands. Let us call these people intellect workers. classes, technician, For, to repeat, the purpose of the intellect workers work and thought is the particular job in hand. It is the rationalization, mastery, and manipulation of whatever branch of reality he is immediately concerned with. In this regard he differs little, if at all, from the manual worker who molds metal sheets, assembles parts of an engine, or lays bricks in constructing a wall. Putting it in negative terms, the intellect worker as such Not that every intellect worker explicitly formulates and consciously holds this view. Yet he has, one might almost say, an instinctive affinity to theories incorporating and rationalizing it. One of them is Adam Smiths time-honored and well known concept of the world in which everyone by cultivating his own garden contributes most to the flourishing of the gardens of all. In the light of this philosophy, the concern with the whole moves out of the center of the individuals preoccupation, and affects him, if at all, merely marginally, that is to say in his capacity as a citizen. And the strength and influence of this philosophy derive from the very important truth that it conveys: that under capitalism the whole confronts the individual as an overpowering objectified process irrationally propelled by obscure forces which he is incapable of comprehending, let alone of influencing.

Today's Entry: Go Go Mozilla Friday, May 31, 2002 Top story on Wired News right now is my report, AOL Test May Renew Browser War . It's not exactly news that AOL is testing the Mozilla browser instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer in its beta test program - beta testers have been yakking about it for weeks despite the non-disclosure agreements they signed. But a few weeks of reporting has verified two things: (a) AOL shows all the signs of seriously moving toward switching browsers for the first time in five years. (b) No one can explain why [in the strategic business sense] they would do this, other than to be less tied to Microsoft despite the costs and potential disruptions. Analysts I talked to all agreed it would be more an emotional decision than a bottom-line business strategy. The open-source programmers and testers behind Mozilla are happy, if not cheering: Many aren't crazy about AOL, to put it mildy. If Mozilla weren't standards-based and GPL'd (meaning AOL is legally required to make any source code changes publicly available), the switch to an in-house browser would be assumed to be another megaplayer's attempt to lock up a distribution channel along with its content. here At the same time, the Mozillans want to see their work in the hands of millions of people who will enjoy it. In that respect, they sound like my musician friends who get major label record contracts.
