The Fly II is plenty gory, but can't hold a fly-swatter to the original
THE FLY II Directed by Chris Walas. Starring Eric Stoltz, Daphne Zuniga, Lee Richardson, and John Getz. Now playing at Cinema 57. By PETER PARNASSA THE PREMISE IS INTRIGUING enough: a movie about a "man-fly" growing up. Unfortunately, The Fly II has neither the wit nor the imagination of the film on which it is based. Director Chris Walas (who created the make-up effects for The Fly ), seems uncertain of what story he would like to tell and this results in an unsatisfying Friday the 13th- type movie. The Fly II begins with the birth of Martin Brundle (Eric Stoltz) whose father, Seth, was a mutant "man-fly" created in a teleportation experiment gone awry. Anton Bartok (Lee Richardson), head of the company that financed Seth's research, adopts the boy. Treated like a laboratory animal, Martin is placed under constant supervision and given frequent physical examinations. He is never told of his father's condition; his case is described as an "accelerated growth" problem. At the age of five, Martin looks and behaves like a twenty-year-old. Martin has also inherited his father's genius and spends his time in the laboratory since he is not allowed to play with other children.

Marina del Rey, CA 90292-6610 . . . or as attachments via e-mail: ccnews@jiethics.org Thanks! INDIAN RIVER COUNTY In a science fair experiment inspired by CC!, a ten-year-old has shown that people are more honest when they think others may be watching. Henry Weathersbee wondered what would happen if he put money in various locations on school campuses. So he placed 18 Ziploc bags, each containing $2, in public areas (open spaces and media centers) and private ones (bathrooms) at three local schools. The results? Students returned nine of the bags, or 50 percent. But they turned in 66 percent of bags from public areas and only 17 percent from private ones. Henry felt some students thought that if no one knew they took the money, it was all right to keep it. He also expected more overall honesty. He had predicted students would turn in 70 percent of the bags instead of 50 percent Henry decided to do the experiment in November 2002 after participating in his school's CC! program, and he based his project on the Pillar of Trustworthiness. He said he likes the program, especially discussions on making ethical decisions.

My favorite part is where Marty says he's "enraged byond description" at the U.S. Senate's attempts to censor the Internet, and that he's concerned senators "will wave my study around Congress as evidence." Another good section is where Marty says that his "worst nightmare" happened when anti-porn feminist Catherine MacKinnon called his study "a landmark, and gloats over every page. The very people you despise publicly praise your work with superlatives beyond description." So far none of those cases - each involving someone who traveled recently to the disease's hot spots - has spread to anyone else, but health officials said Wednesday that they were "on high alert for this." The disease's failure to spread further so far boosts officials' hope of containing it.

Every once in a while, I come across an idea that I wish was my own. In this case, it's Liquidnet , an exciting company that is providing anonymity and liquidity for large institutional equity traders. Led by industry pioneer Seth Merrin , Liquidnet is leveraging a peer-to-peer software architecture (yes, like Napster ) to turn existing industry trading models on their heads - while saving financial institutions big money by providing better executions and reducing front-running by day traders and other Wall Street firms. Liquidnet has a powerful idea that's off to a great start!

    The War was a Mistake
I grew up within a big family on the East Side of Providence, Rhode Island where I attended Moses Brown High School. My father was an investment banker, and my mother stayed at home. I was active in the Quakers, which was a group against the war. I had practically no chores at home growing up until I got married. Even though I had no idea of what I wanted to do, I had no intention of selling stocks and bonds. There wasn't any discrimination in my neighborhood that I can remember. A colored maid worked for our family when I was young, and that didn't seem to pose any problem or seem strange at all. I never thought discrimination against people of color was as bad as it evidently was. I am always amazed that discrimination was such a big part of the politics in the South, and still is. Growing up, I liked to listen to jazz; Benny Goodman, black and white bands, and jazz combos. Although music was not an important part of my life, I did attend concerts for some of the "big bands" in Providence and Warwick. When I went to Moses Brown, which is a private school run by Quakers.
