CMAJ A is for addiction how to stop time: heroin from A to Z
Ann Marlowe
Basic Books, New York; 1999
$36.50 (cloth) 297 pp. ISBN 0-465-03150-1 how to stop time: heroin from A to Z , by Ann Marlowe, a highly intelligent woman who earned big money as a Wall Street analyst in the late 80s and early 90s and chose to use heroin just because she wanted to. Addiction, so conventional wisdom has it, is about loss. Loss of control. Loss of resources. Loss of good health. Loss of support. Ann Marlowe lost nothing. Her memoir has a hard, implacable edge, almost as though she were reporting on a study in which she is the single experimental animal. She sought, and apparently found, that fine line between the pleasures of addiction and its risks, quantified and deliberately avoided. (See under "junkie.") Is Marlowe an addict or not? What is addiction? According to the DSM-IV, addiction involves substance tolerance, symptoms secondary to substance withdrawal, escalating substance use, reduction in social and recreational activities because of substance use, and an increased expenditure of time to obtain and use the substance. Given these criteria, it is difficult to label this author as an addict. As for her own definition of addiction, Marlowe writes: "I'd call it a form of mourning for the unrecoverable glories of the first time." Marlowe dwells at length on the magic of the "first time" high and the endless pursuit of that magic. Magic and myth go hand in hand, but Marlowe is contemptuous of heroin mythology, especially the myth of heroin's glamour: "heroin isn't that wonderful: it's a substance some of us agree to pursue ... because it's easier to do that than figure out what is worth pursuing."

4. NATURE OF PROBLEM SOLVED The MARLOWE program simulates atomic collisions in crystalline targets using the binary collision approximation. It follows out the consequences of launching an energetic atomic projectile, from either an external beam or an interior site, into a target. The targets may have many material regions, each with its own arbitrary (triclinic) crystal structure and with many kinds of atoms. The program follows the slowing-down of the primary particle and, if desired, that of all target particles which are displaced from their lattice sites, until they either leave the target or fall below a selected low kinetic energy. All cascades may be initiated in undamaged material or damage may be accumulated from one cascade to another; cascades may be run in groups of a selected size. The User's Guide contains a detailed listing of changes in Version 15 and a summary of changes in earlier versions. Version 15b of MARLOWE, dated 5 December 2002, includes some error corrections for the previous release. The new package includes Version 3 of TABULA, a program which uses MARLOWE interatomic potential energy functions to tabulate the classical elastic scattering integrals and related data.

The Conspiracy
A Concise Biography
Amore , Lucan's First Book , followed by Dido, Queen of Carthage during that time.
Two years later (1589), he was present when William Bradley was murder by Thomas Watson (the poet) and both where jailed. Thomas Watson was later acquitted on the grounds of self-defense and Marlowe was released after spending two weeks in the jail. During this time in jail, he may have become an acquaintance of John Poole, who was convicted of counterfeiting. Coincidentally, counterfeiting was one the charges brought against Marlowe by Richard Baines, some years later. It is also interesting to note that Thomas Watson was a friend of Thomas Walsingham, who later employed Marlowe. The Jew of Malta is estimated to have been written around this time.
In the following year (1590) the first part of Tamburlaine was published with the authors name omitted. The play was an instant success among the public, but was not very well received among his peers. Two years later (1592) the second part of

The Marlowe Conspiracy:
Part I
On May 30, 1593, in a charming little rooming house in Deptford, Mother England turned her head for only a moment while one of her most gifted servants was slaughtered. The young man whose brilliant mind spawned some of the greatest tragedies known to man was and was privy to the darkest secrets of Elizabethan society was forever silenced by the thrust of a dagger. Why was Christopher Marlowe murdered?
The plot surrounding Marlowe's life and death is one so fantastic and complicated that I hesitate to take on the burden of revealing it to you. It is accepted among scholars that Christopher Marlowe was a spy in the Queen's secret service. It is documented that while attending college, Marlowe was absent for several lengthy periods of time. It came to the attention of Cambridge that Marlowe had been spending time in Rheims, a reputed Catholic haven. Armed with this knowledge Cambridge assumed the worst and threatened to withhold Christopher Marlowe's M.A. degree. However, the Queen's Privy Council intervened on Marlowe's behalf with a letter dated June 29, 1587, stating he had been about the Queen's business and had acted for the benefit of his country. This would not be the last time Marlowe's intentions would be misunderstood.
To penetrate and deceive a society of powerful and dangerous men took the skill of an actor, but to remain among them and be accepted as one of their own on a day to day basis took true genius. Certainly Christopher Marlowe possessed both of those qualities. During his exploits he came into the company of many a notorious villain and as a result received the reputation of a scoundrel himself. Marlowe was present when Thomas Watson murdered William Bradley and was jailed for several days pending an investigation. Watson was acquitted on grounds of self-defense and both Marlowe and Watson were released. Such events have a way of tarnishing ones reputation.

Quarrel has tragic ending
By DEBBIE HALL
Bulletin Staff Writer
One man is dead and another has been charged with second-degree murder after an early Sunday shooting on Southland Drive south of Martinsville. Bobby Lee Collins, 30, of 750 Southland Drive, was shot to death in the incident. His neighbor and friend, James Garnett Marlowe III, 38, of 765 Southland Drive, Martinsville, was charged in the incident, according to Henry County Sheriff's Capt. Kimmie Nester. Before the shooting, Collins and Marlowe had been socializing, but a dispute apparently erupted between the two, Nester said. He added that he did not know what the quarrel was about. Collins' wife called E911 for help at 4:41 a.m. Sunday, Nester said, and police estimate the shooting occurred four minutes later. Collins was shot as he stood in the road in front of Marlowe's home, Nester said. A single bullet, traveling from the left arm into the left side of Collins' chest, is believed to have been responsible for the death, the captain added. Collins was taken to Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County and later pronounced dead, according to a release from the Henry County Sheriff's Office. An autopsy will be performed in the state medical examiner's office in Roanoke, Nester added.

Lester gives vintage plane to Bedford D-Day Memorial
By MICKEY POWELL
Bulletin Staff Writer After learning that a memorial honoring deceased World War II veterans was going to be erected in Bedford, Martinsville businessman Morton W. Lester decided to make a contribution. Lester, an aviation enthusiast, donated a 1942 airplane which he bought about a quarter-century ago and had been used during the war. Soldiers who died during combat made "the greatest sacrifice," said Lester. Among them were 19 men from Bedford who were killed during the initial stages of the Allied invasion of Normandy. The town, which had about 3,200 residents at the time, had the highest per capita loss of life of any U.S. community during the war. "I wanted to be part of recognizing that little town," said Lester, president of The Lester Corporation, a local property management firm. He had bought the L-3 plane, manufactured by the Aeronautical Corp. of America (Aeronca), to teach his son, Curtiss, how to fly. But the plane needed to be restored before it could be flown again. "It takes about a year to restore one," Lester said.

Primary Documents Relating to Christopher Marlowe
The following is a scan of the Privy Council's entail to Cambridge University dated 29 June 1587 demanding Marlowe's degree. It is followed by a typescript prepared by Peter Farey. "Whereas it was reported that Christopher Morley was determined to have gone beyond the seas to Reames and there to remaine, Their L(ordship)s thought good to certefie that he had no such intent, but that in all his accions he had behaued himself orderlie and discreetelie wherebie he had done her ma(jes)tie good seruice, and deserued to be rewarded for his faithfull dealinge: Their L(ordship)s request was thst the rumor thereof should be allaied by all possible means, and that he should furthered in the degree he was to takethis next Commencement: Because it was not her ma(jes)ties pleasure that anie one employed as he had been in matters touching the benefitt of his Countrie should be defamed by those that are ignorant in th'affaires he went about" Peter reminds us, "This had been signed by the 'Lord Archbishop' (Whitgift), 'Lord Chancelor' (Hatton), 'Lord Threasurer' (Burghley), 'Lord Chamberlaine' (Hunsdon) and 'Mr Comptroler' (Crofts'. It is worth remembering that Lord Burghley was also Chancellor of the University!"
Marlowe is believed to have died, from being stabbed in the face on 30 May 1593, however there is considerable evidence this death was faked. In the following scan is the church record in Deptford, Kent for a burial on 1 June 1593 said to have been his. Curiously no gravestone, let alone, monument, to Marlowe, already the realm's most gifted poet and dramatist, was placed by any of his my powerful friends and patrons.

What Does Shakespeare Tell Us About Marlowe's Escape?
Scholars know that Shakespeare was continuously alluding to and thus thinking about Marlowe. The allusions often take the form of direct quotes, as in Hamlet and As You Like It. Many times, however, they are more subtle. Bloom is no doubt correct to suppose that Shakespeare had Marlowe on his mind when he wrote this passage, supposedly while in early retirement in Stratford: xxxx These allusions have been known for years, if not for centuries. So it is best that we focus the reader's attention on two new discoveries that are nothing short of phenomenal, considering how many times these texts have been poured over for just this sort of material. Note: Further along in this essay I have compiled a table that compares, in graphic form, the allusions in these plays to Christopher Marlowe. For the reader that is familiar with the background and conversant with all four plays click here To take them chronologically requires that we begin with the early source play of the mature Henriad: The Famous Victories of Henry the Fifth.
