Newsweek , 57 percent of all African Americans polled agreed with the statement that Malcolm X should be considered "a hero for black Americans today." Another 82 percent responded that Malcolm X symbolized a "strong black male." Dozens of prominent performance artists within contemporary urban, "hip hop culture", began to draw upon the words and image of Malcolm X in their work. Spike Lee’s powerful film depicting the life of Malcolm X brought this charismatic historical figure to an international audience. First, it is composed entirely in 3/4 time, or multiples thereof. The composer explains his reasoning for this choice, "In Night Music I put everything in some form of triple time so that the whole score would feel vaguely like a long waltz with scherzi in between so that no song would seem to have come from another texture." [ ] As a result, the entire score maintains a strong sense of unity, with each song contributing to the total mood and feel of the show. The second innovation Sondheim introduces in this musical is a quintet which opens the show and reappears throughout the evening, serving much like a Greek chorus. A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC was originally produced at the Shubert Theatre, New York, on February 25, 1973, with Glynis Johns as "Desirée," Len Cariou as "Fredrik," Hermione Gingold as "Madame Armfeldt," Victoria Mallory as "Anne," Patricia Elliott as "Charlotte," and Laurence Guittard as "Carl-Magnus." The show went on to win Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Music and Lyrics (Stephen Sondheim), Best Book (Hugh Wheeler), Best Actress in a Musical (Glynis Johns), and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical (Patricia Elliott).

Little Holes by Mike MacLean She is perfect. Tall, only inches shorter than him. Lean, but not skinny. Her breasts are firm, jutting against the silk blouse; her hips are full. Her eyes are blue and her hair, of course, is blonde. She only wears black. Like I said, perfect. I picked her out myself. They meet the first time at the little coffee shop on Fourth Street. It's seven o'clock in the evening and they play jazz in the shop. All coffee shops play jazz. She asks if she can butt ahead in line. He turns to give a sour look, but then gets a view of her. He steps aside. She thanks him. Her fingertips brush across his chest as she passes. I can tell by the gleam in his eyes, he's not thinking about the Ten Commandments. I'm in a corner at an wrought iron table, an untouched iced tea sitting in front of me. I don't wear a suit like he does. I'm in jeans and a plain t-shirt. I don' t have a briefcase. I have a duffle bag. The bag looks cheap-in fact, it has a hole in it. Peeking out from that hole is a video camera. The camera is rolling. I go outside to the parking lot and wait for her in my car. The night is restless and dark. A summer storm sweeps from the desert, caking my windshield with dust.

Beyond Fad and Fashion Understanding The Essence of Malcolm X
by Ron Daniels There is no more popular political leader among young African Americans today than El Hajji Malik Shabazz, Malcolm X. From the Autobiography of Malcolm X to tapes of his speeches, everything about "Our Black Shining Prince" is in high demand. Malcolm X memorabilia are the hottest items on the market with street vendors and Black-oriented gift shops. Malcolm X buttons, t-shirts, posters, and the popular X caps are visible everywhere. There is no doubt that it has become quite fashionable to be down with Malcolm. Malcolm Little spent only a brief time in his native Omaha, Nebraska. Much of his early life was spent in Lansing, Michigan and later in the growing ghettos of Detroit, Boston, and New York. Like so many young African-American men today, Malcolm was a "manchild in the promised land," seemingly condemned to a life of poverty, vice, and violence. He was a troubled spirit who was forced to cope with the trauma of the murder of his father for being a "uppity nigger" (Malcolm's father was an organizer for Marcus Garvey's Universal Improvement AssociationUNIA). He witnessed the trials and tribulations of a devoted mother struggling against terrible odds. To keep the family together within a racist and oppressive society. It was/is the kind of stuff that has turned so many young African-American men to the streets.

Frankie Please welcome Frankie Muniz. [cheering, Frankie enters] Sit down. You look absolutely fantastic! Thanks. You look really good. Did you tie that tie yourself? No I didn't. I had wardrobe tie it, cause I didn't know how to, my mom didn't know how to. You know, this is true. You know, I didn't learn how to tie a tie until I was 43. [laughing] It's true. I had big brothers and then, you know, staff, and there was nothing really in between, and I would learn once in a while. And so eventually . . . is that a clip-on? No it's not. Oh right, they tied it for you. You look great. How old are you Frankie? I'm 14. 14. 14 years old, and you're in this hit show. Did you read the reviews over the weekend? I did a little. Pretty cool. [cheering] How does your family feel about the success? They must be going crazy. Oh yeah, everyone is really supportive - my mom, my grandpa and my grandma. We have these little "Malcolm in the Middle" postcard, and they sent out like 500 and they were, like, "We need more! We need more!" so, we kept giving them. They sent them to everyone. And are people at your school excited?

A CONVERSATION WITH...
May 22, 2000
Now, another of our conversations about new books, and to Ray Suarez. RAY SUAREZ: The idea that little changes can add up to big results may not rock you back in your chair, but can you explain how it works? Explaining how ideas catch on and spread in an almost organic way led to a book called "The Tipping Point: How Little Things can Make a Big Difference." Author Malcolm Gladwell joins us now. Let's start with a tipping point: What is it? See if you can give us an example of how it works. MALCOLM GLADWELL, Author, "The Tipping Point:" A tipping point is that moment in an epidemic when the epidemic changes state. If you think about, anecdotally, every winter when there's always a point when you look around you and everyone has the flu and no one had the flu the week before, that's because the flu has just tipped. And that's very characteristic of disease epidemics. You know, there's a moment when the AIDS epidemic tipped in the early 1980's. You can actually look on and go back and pinpoint a period of a couple of months when that disease suddenly exploded. One of the ideas of the book is that ideas and products and information and messages undergo the same kind of process that they can tip and explode all at once. I'm trying to figure out why that happens in "The Tipping Point."
