AcePilots Main Page The Forum Other Aviation Pioneers On May 20-21, 1927 Charles Lindbergh made the first solo, nonstop New York to Paris flight in the Spirit of St. Louis . After the 3,610-mile, 34 hour, flight across the Atlantic, Lindbergh became an international hero, and the most famous man in the world. Today, his airplane, the Spirit of St. Louis , hangs in the atrium of the National Air and Space Museum. After bursting into international fame with his translantic flight, Lindbergh remained in the public eye, often the subject of controversy. Retiring in later years to the island of Maui, Hawaii, he died there in 1974.
Youth
Born on February 4, 1902, Lindbergh was mechanically inclined from childhood. The son of a Swedish immigrant, Charles August "C.A." Lindbergh, and his second wife, Evangeline Land, young Charles had a rootless and somewhat solitary childhood. For many years he and his mother moved between their primary home in Little Falls, Minnesota, her family's house in Detroit, and Washington, D.C., where his Congressman father spent a most of his time. Charles had no siblings his age (two much older half-sisters) and few close friends his own age. He learned to love nature, the outdoors, solitude, and developed a passion for collecting and analyzing things.
Fascinated with aviation, he earned his pilot's license, and in 1923 bought a Jenny to take up barnstorming.

CHARLES LINDBERGH Aviator Name at birth: Charles Augustus Lindbergh In 1927 Charles Lindbergh made the first solo airplane flight across the Atlantic Ocean. He left Roosevelt Field in New York on 20 May 1927, piloting a plane named The Spirit of St. Louis. 33 1/2 hours later he landed in Paris to a hero's welcome and permanent international fame. In 1932 Lindbergh's son was kidnapped and later found dead; the case became a public sensation. A German immigrant named Bruno Hauptmann was convicted of the crime and executed, though in the years since some have claimed he was wrongly accused. During 1939 and 1940 Lindbergh was a vocal opponent of American entry into World War II. However, after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor he joined the war effort, eventually flying 50 combat missions in the Pacific. His 1953 autobiography The Spirit of St. Louis won the Pulitzer Prize. In later years Lindbergh and his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, were well-known as advocates for environmental conservation.
Extra credit : Lindbergh was followed by Amelia Earhart , the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Charles Lindbergh
Pilot, Inventor, Author, and Environmentalist By Eric M. Gotha Middle School Windermere, Florida.
C harles Lindbergh (1902-1974) was born on February 4, 1902 in Detroit Michigan. His parents were Evangaline Land Lindbergh, and Charles Lindbergh. He had no brothers or sisters. Young Charles grew up in Little Falls Minnesota and in Washington DC. His father was a politician. His parents had separated, so he only saw his father when he went to visit him in Washington DC.
Charles did not like school, or any other formal education. He did not like the idea of other people telling him what he should learn. Lindbergh went to the University of Wisconsin to study mechanical engineering, but left two years later to go to flight school. He married Anne Morrow, and later had one child, named Charles. Lindbergh became a technical advisor to Trans Continental Air Transport, and Pan American Airways.
Charles Lindbergh was famous for being the first person to solo across the Atlantic Ocean in an airplane non-stop. The aircraft was paid for by a group of St. Louis businessmen. (That is why it was called The Spirit of St. Louis.) Many airplane companies rejected his request to build an airplane for such a risky venture. He finally found a small company called Ryan Aircraft that was excited about the challenge. He worked with them for two months, helping to design and build the airplane. Later, after Charles and Anne had their child, the baby was kidnapped and held for ransom. After many weeks, the baby's body was discovered in the woods by a small town near their house.

The Flyer
Charles Lindbergh
He was the century's first hero and unwittingly pioneered the age of mass-media celebrity BY REEVE LINDBERGH I was the youngest of four brothers and two sisters and grew up during the second half of my father's life, when the early years of triumph, tragedy and controversy were over. I felt no personal familiarity with the famous 1927 flight, and if I asked my father about that accomplishment, he would say only, "Read my book!" He wrote this passage on the flight: "Now I've burned the last bridge behind me. All through the storm and darkest night, my instincts were anchored to the continent of North America, as though an invisible cord still tied me to its coasts. In an emergencyif the ice-filled clouds had merged, if oil pressure had begun to drop, if a cylinder had started missingI would have turned back toward America and home. Now, my anchor is in Europe: on a continent I've never seen... Now, I'll never think of turning back." Sometimes, though, I wonder whether he would have turned back if he'd known the life he was headed for.

The remains of Charles A. Lindbergh Jr., (POLICE) The child's body was face downward, covered with leaves and insects. It was little more than a skeleton, the outline of a form in a dark, murky heap of rotting vegetation. The left leg was missing from the knee down, as were the left hand and right arm. Most of its organs were gone, scavenged by the animal life dwelling in the wooded area. It had decomposed so completely that it was not possible at first to determine whether it was a boy or a girl. The cause of death was a massive fracture of the skull. The body had been left to the elements for two to three months. Less than twenty-four hours later, and an hour after it had been identified as Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr. by its nurse and father, the remains were cremated. Seventy-three dramatic days of waiting had come to an end. Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. (AP)

Lindbergh Does It! To Paris in 33 1/2 Hours; Flies 1,000 Miles Through Snow and Sleet; Cheering French Carry Him Off Field New York Times , May 21, 1927 Early in the morning on May 20, 1927 Charles A. Lindbergh took off in The Spirit of St. Louis from Roosevelt Field near New York City. Flying northeast along the coast, he was sighted later in the day flying over Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. From St. Johns, Newfoundland, he headed out over the Atlantic, using only a magnetic compass, his airspeed indicator, and luck to navigate toward Ireland. The flight had captured the imagination of the American public like few events in history. Citizens waited nervously by their radios, listening for news of the flight. When Lindbergh was seen crossing the Irish coast, the world cheered and eagerly anticipated his arrival in Paris. A frenzied crowd of more than 100,000 people gathered at Le Bourget Field to greet him. When he landed, less than 34 hours after his departure from New York, Lindbergh became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
