For 10 days the Space Shuttle Columbia streaked through the skies, and for the last 7 of those days, hams around the world were sent emotionally into orbit when they heard Dr. Garriott's voice break their squelches calling Earth-bound stations. He turned it into a mean muscle car, drove it for a while, even gunned the engine once or twice for friends. Then he gave it to his pastor to raise money for his church. The space cowboy is gone. The seven crew members who died when the Columbia broke apart Saturday over Texas were part of a new breed. Several had extensive experience flying military jets, but at heart they were technically skilled bookworms, scientists first and pilots second. The bulk of their training was in engineering, medicine and computers, and the vehicle they flew was not a rocket, but a soaring laboratory. The nation's space program was once dominated by white men. No longer. The Columbia crew was a diverse collection of men and women from three countries. They sang in church choirs. Pilot William McCool was a former Eagle Scout who loved to play chess. Not long before the Columbia lifted off, neighbors ran into Clark at the Kroger's grocery store a couple of miles from NASA headquarters, buying milk.

"It’s part of human nature," Lichtenberg said. A little creativity allowed Lichtenberg and fellow crew mates on his second voyage to take part in a bit of golf . The club was fashioned from an inspection mirror. A golf ball consisted of a rolled up sock, held together by Velcro tape.

U.S. Space Startup Flies High—In Both English And Russian
Founded five years ago, Payload Systems Inc. is stili going strong, and the key to its survival has been diversification
By BRUCE FELLMAN When the space shuttle Columbia touched down in late 1983, payload specialist Byron K. Lichtenberg emerged from the Spacelab-1 mission both triumphant and troubled. The experiments—on everything from astronomy to protein crystal growth studies—had gone exceedingly well, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration wanted him to fly again. There was, however, a slight problem: Lichtenberg, a biomedical engineer, was about to become unemployed. For the five years leading up to Spacelab, the energetic scientist had worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Manned Vehicle Laboratory. Much of his research involved an experiment on space motion-sickness that he and MIT graduate student Anthony P. Arrott, who manned a Mission Control console during the trip, had prepared for Lichtenberg's first shuttle flight, But because MIT had no experiments scheduled, for the next flight, Lichtenberg,s job at the Cambridge, Mass., universiy was to end with that Spacelab mission. What to do? Almost immediatley he] got a job offer at the Lockheed Research Center in Palo Alto, Calif. where additional shuttle experiments were being developed. But he and Arrott, who got his doctorate shortly after the shuttle mission touched down, had another bee in their bonnets. “We thought it would be fun to start a company,” Lichtenberg explains in the Cambridge office of Payload Systems Inc. (PSI), the business they began planning at a post-Columbia dinner celebration.”We wanted to promote the commercial exploration of space, and we thought we could make it cost-effective for companies by putting together a package of services,” says Lichtenberg. “We were going after a very small business niche that worked solely with people wanting help in doing experiments on the shuttle.”

Third-grade results are in for TAKSBy Jennifer Stone Athens ISD third-graders taking the state's more difficult skills assessment test last month have exceeded state expectations, if not the state average. Using the results of field tests for the new Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), the state predicted 85 percent of all third-graders in Texas would pass the test. In Athens, 86 percent of the third-graders passed, according to preliminary results. That puts Athens just below the statewide passing rate of 89 percent. Students in third grade this year were the first to take the new, tougher reading test. They must pass in order to be promoted to the fourth grade. Students were tested in late February, and results were released to Athens ISD Monday. To pass, third-graders were required to answer 22 out of 36 reading questions correctly. The state breaks test results down by race and economic subgroup. In Athens, 74 percent of black students, 86 percent of Hispanic students and 91 percent of white students passed. Seventy-seven percent of students who are considered economically disadvantaged passed the test. Statewide, 77 percent of black students, 80 percent of Hispanic students, 96 percent of whites and 84 percent of economically disadvantaged students passed.

Remarks During a Conference Call With Chancellor Helmut Kohl of the Federal Republic of Germany and Crewmembers of the Space Shuttle Columbia December 5, 1983
The President. Greetings from Washington. Chancellor Kohl is with us all the way from Athens, Greece; along with you astronauts hovering in space, with me here in Washington, and the whole world listening, this is one heck of a conference call. Seriously though, this space shuttle mission represents the enormous potential available to mankind. The Spacelab, in which the experiments are being carried out, was designed and built by the European Space Agency. The Federal Republic of Germany and other European contributors can be especially proud of this achievement. It is fitting that on this the German-American tricentennial a German astronaut is part of the shuttle team. The shuttle is demonstrating that technology can be used to bring people together in a new spirit of enterprise and cooperation to better their lives, ensure the peace of mankind. I know Chancellor Kohl agrees with me that this shuttle mission, with its German and American crew, represents the highest aspirations of our two peoples. Chancellor Kohl, this is a great day. Perhaps you could give us your thoughts on this marvelous occasion.
